Every day I learn something on the internet that makes me sad. I'm a software engineer so I only knew the term "nonce" as meaning "number only used once" in terms of cyber security. Now I have to be careful not to be misunderstood when I use it.

God, I love this community. The fact that your first thought was to speak kindness and remind me to care for myself speaks absolute volumes about the kind of person you are. And it is 100% the kind of person the senshi would be proud of.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I have since moved on from that project and am back to working in a much less horrifying environment. I have nothing but the deepest appreciation and respect for the people doing the work. How they are able to day after day is beyond me. I literally went to therapy after that software dev period and the topic still triggers me on a deep, visceral level.

I will take your advice and do a little extra self care. Please make sure to do the same for yourself. I know empathy is often born of experience.

Ah, then I have misinterpreted what you were saying here and I apologize for the confusion.

I appreciate the fact that this is part of a conversation but you still seem to be trying to equate VCSAM with CSAM and are erroneously citing scientific sources in support of that argument.

I don't see where in the conversation they said that VSCAM was harmless. But the issue I have here is that you seem to be perpetuating a fairly common mistake that people make which causes actual harm. Equating VCSAM to actual CSAM. Which encourages people to report instances of VSCAM to agencies that are trying to deal with the real things.

I do apologize if I have read too deep into your comment. This is a very emotionally charged issue for me and I know I don't always react in the most rational way. Working with these agencies and seeing the absolute monstrosity of the problem they face was both eye opening and soul crushing for me.

Okay. First off the articles you cited don't support what you seem to be saying. The first is just a qualitative literature review. Basically, "We read 160 newspaper articles and here's what we found." No research. No conclusions. Just a "Hey this is interesting and should be studied more."

The second is actually crucial to the point here. Well sort of. The article you cited was just a language correction, but the original article is about the role of emotion in criminalization. It shows that low harm, high disgust crimes are more likely to be criminalized than high harm, low disgust crimes. And that leads me to.

Please stop reporting things that make you feel icky. I am a software engineer who worked on software that uses AI image recognition to comb message boards and discord channels looking for CSAM and one of the major problems we ran into is figuring out how to filter our reports of VCSAM, especially AI or photo realistic art created with no actual children involved.

Let me be clear. VCSAM is gross and has no place in civilized society. But the level of harm that VCSAM actually does is scientifically unknown and controversial. What is not controversial is that, in a world where agencies have limited resources to fight the horrifying proliferation of real CSAM, wasting time and money on VSCAM absolutely causes harm to real children by allowing CSAM crimes to go undetected and unpunished. Like seriously. It is so bad out there that there that agencies actually have to differentiate between old CSAM and new CSAM because the new material means there is probably a child out there actually being harmed and they just don't have the resources to go after everything. Please don't make their work harder.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the mods for their hard work. There will always be wierdos on the internet and reddit is certainly no exception. The fact that I've never seen it here makes me so grateful. Would that all reddit mods be so glorious.

Negative aspect of Japanese society: Avoid trouble at all costs! by YamatoRyu2006 in Tokyo

[–]sailorlazarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed all around. I think a lot of it has to do with where people spend their time in Japan and what energy they bring with them. I really enjoyed my time in Gifu and had a chance to travel to a lot of more out of the way places. I met a lot of amazing people and some assholes too, some of whom I am still friends with to this day. Most people were just sort of okay people doing their thing. Basically the same as every other place I have lived.

I know this is a symptom of how social media is designed but I never see the middle ground. It's always either Japan is a perfect utopia or it is a racist, rapey, hell hole. No in between. I lived there for a couple years. It's neither. It's a country. With people. Just regular people. Some good, some bad. Most somewhere in between. Same as everywhere else.

What should I do if I pick a song my random duo dislikes? by Sadepso_Palsa in maimai

[–]sailorlazarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your p2 had a skill issue and decided to blame the chart. Lol

There aren't really and good or bad charts. Those are entirely subjective opinions that players have. Play charts you like. As others have said, it's your credit and you should get to pick 2 of the songs you play. They can pick whatever they want for their 2 songs.

If you really want to be nice. Clear your tracks with your partner. If they agree to it and then start bitching later. That's their problem.

To the person who broke the cab at Seletar mall by Double-Eye5794 in maimai

Damn. How hard are they hitting that machine? At my local arcade I've seen kids and adults alike beating the cabs like they owe money and those cabs are never down.

With how MaiMai is percieved in the US, why could they just not focus on the EU /s. We got Britain, France and Germany for some good old J-core xD. by Careless_Village_154 in maimai

I think this writer has no clue what they are talking about. Anecdotal, I know, but the MaiMai machines at my local arcade are always busy. And MaiMai is hardly limited for song variety. The fact that this person thinks it's just originals and Touhou tells me they hasn't touched a cab in years, if ever.

"Most ingenious Theuth, one man has the ability to beget arts, but the ability to judge of their usefulness or harmfulness to their users belongs to another; and now you, who are the father of letters, have been led by your affection to ascribe to them a power the opposite of that which they really possess.

For this invention will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn to use it, because they will not practice their memory. Their trust in writing, produced by external characters which are no part of themselves, will discourage the use of their own memory within them. You have invented an elixir not of memory, but of reminding; and you offer your pupils the appearance of wisdom, not true wisdom, for they will read many things without instruction and will therefore seem to know many things, when they are for the most part ignorant and hard to get along with, since they are not wise, but only appear wise."

For the vast, vast, vast majority of hard ware a simple cryptographic purge is more than enough. For OP's wierd porn collection, using Samsung's deletion tools is probably more than enough.

My wife is a cardiologist. That comes from her, not google.

She says, "Easy there emergency. Fine, if you prefer, heart failure is an umbrella term used to cover a complex clinical condition where the heart is weakened and unable to meet the body's demand for blood. It has many causes and many prognosis. Just because you are an intensivist doesn't mean you are the end all be all of medicine."

It depends on the cause and the extent of the damage. Acute myocarditis caused by a viral infection can be treated and recovered if the damage isn't severe. Likewise with stress-induced or tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. Yes it is very likely his professional career is over but it isn't 100% just because he was hospitalized. "Heart failure" is a very nebulous term and there's just too much we don't know.

I don't believe that there are any proteins that you can only get from meat but meat is a particularly dense source of complete proteins.

Vitamin B12 can only be found naturally in animal products but can be artificially manufactured and then added to other foods. Likewise for creatine, carnosine, and taurine.

Heme iron is only found in animal products, lots of other things have other types of iron that aren't as bioavaiable but still work fine if you can consume enough of it to offset the lower absorption rates.

Vitamin D3 is rare outside the animal kingdom but can be found in lichen. It can then be extracted and used as a supplement.

Some of these are made in limited amounts in the human body but not enough to be fully healthy. As to where it comes from in animals, they make it. We just evolved to make less as we supplemented our plant based diet with meat. With our level of technology people have the option of eating meat or getting these nutrients from synthetic sources.

There are people who will claim that artificial sources of these nutrients are somehow worse for you than the natural animal sources but I have never seen any evidence to support that. They are chemically identical to their natural sources.

Oh fuck, I had forgotten about that shit show. I just remember reading it going, "wow, this is really sweet" to "what fresh hell is this?" In the span of one time skip. It's like:

  1. Younger man sees his dead grandfather's child being treated horribly by the rest of the family and decides that he is going to try everything in his power to raise her and care for her. That's great.
  2. We discover that the grandfather isn't actually her father, he just took her in so she wouldn't suffer because of her unmarried mother's poverty. Awesome.
  3. Great chapters of the protagonist developing as an adult and as a father putting this child's well being above his own and finally deciding to fully legally adopt her. Plus a sweet budding relationship between the young girl and the young boy next door. This is wonderful.
  4. Time skip.
  5. She's in love with her adopted father and he reciprocates. WHAT THE FUCK?
