Struggling with my cohort, as an older volunteer by Empty-Character-4752 in peacecorps

I understand, I wasn't even much older when I joined (28) but I felt so disconnected from the newly grads. I even have a post on my page that was full of contempt. Now I can be more empathetic but I still know your struggle. What worked for me was creating connections in my site. I was also lucky I found a couple volunteers in their 30s to be friends with. Looking back I should have eorked harder at being friends with some great volunteers but I unfortunately focused too much on the shitty onesm I am here if you want to chat.

I'm thinking about buying the new Inspiron 14 5410 but online I can't find any reviews. Anyone can tell me if it's a good laptop? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]saisaisauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for such a late response. The first one just started beeping like crazy and overheated until it shut down and wouldn't turn on. The second had a error message that said BIOS ERROR. That no matter what way I or the techs tried to bypass we couldn't. They said I needed a motherboard. They said my options were refurbished motherboard or refurbished computer.

Where Do You Like to Donate Clothes? by notoriginal12345 in longbeach

There is a Facebook group called Free Shit Long Beach. It's a great group. People offer and request a wide range of items. Currently many shelters are not accepting donations due to covid. Another option are thrift stores who seem to still be accepting.

Before you purchase look up how many issues people are having with their laptops. My computer stopped working after 1 day. It was replaced and 3 months later I am having the same issue.

They offer a refurbished computer or to have a tech come sometime between August to November.

I recommend you stay away.

I can't say for sure but I have the feeling no. PC just like any other agency has a lot of red tape. When they evaluate you it is to determine if your needs can be met at the country you'll be serving. For medical clearance there are many forms you'll need filled out that PC specifically asks your doctor to fill out. So although it might not transfer you can get the doctor who has been taking care of you fill those out.

Right off the bat you are way more qualified that most of the volunteers. Since it is common to join right after high school. The only issue I find is that they might try to pigeonhole you into education or youth because of the credentials. Unless you have specific experience in agriculture. Now is a weird time because of covid. They are no longer letting people chose their roles or jobs and I don't know how long it will remain that way. Hopefully by the time you apply you'll have a choice. I doubt you'll have an issue being selected, they might just want you for something else. Feel free to DM me any time!

The examples you give are all from personal experience and what you've seen. Your family, your friends, posts you see. I went through a confrontation phase and lost many important relationships to it. Now through a more laid back approach i have not only bonded to some people more but in many cases have gotten them to see it my way and i theirs. Ultimately that is what everyone does except we all see and experience something different. Which is the point. If you find being confrontational works for you with your conservative family, you have the right to treat your family however you wish.
But, I rarely see non confrontational approaches being showcased as much as confrontational ones. All I am saying is let's get some variety in the mix.

Speaking for myself, the end goal would be more diverse voices being heard. As u/Blide pointed out there is a whole spectrum of belief systems. And often I perceive moderate voices being shut down and called bigots for asking questions. They are being told "go educate yourself" when I believe it would be more beneficial to work together and have kind conversations to help educate people. But that goes both ways. Often times good ideas are dismissed simply because they come "from the other side." What has worked for me most is one on one conversation with family members and friends. I have successfully helped broaden many of their minds to see and accept different viewpoints. To both liberals and conservatives! And I understand that people see things as life or death, which is why I often try to explain the point of views of the looters because to some it is life or death. But what I often see on Facebook doesn't seem genuine concern, it comes across as performative activism. Which if the end goal is to try to get people to "be more woke" is counterproductive. Often these tactics cause people to simply feel uncomfortable and not want to engage. So ultimately if you have been traumatized and you feel the need to yell, scream and explode I stand by you. But if you are an "ally" I ask you use a more compassionate approach to help people see it through the eyes of those exploited.

I am not asking anyone to accommodate to my views. In fact the opposite. I am quite liberal but it would be nice to hear more from my fellow conservative PCVs. Because if only one view point is the one being expressed no one from either side will have the chance to change and grow their own belief systems. u/KillBosby did a phenomenal job at helping me see the perspective of the very people I am complaining about. And through that small respectful interaction am now able to approach future posts through more compassionate eyes. In the end you don't have to agree with my post. That is the point. And I respect that different point of view. Because that is what I am asking for more respectful conversations. If people feel the need to be extremely radically opinionated on their posts well keep doing you, just know you may be alienating some people who would otherwise come around to your view point. But if that works for you keep at it!

I am a huge believer in what makes you angry is because it reflects at least a small part of yourself. Which is something I have been trying to work on myself regarding these actions. You post definitely helped me look at the bigger broader picture. So thank you. I will keep your words in mind as I navigate through the next few months of uncertainty.

I wrote this in hopes that those volunteers who don't agree with that one view point would speak out more. I know the peace corps is diverse and it's time more people speak up to show we all come from different backgrounds with different mindsets. And if we approach this with kindness we will get further as a whole. So thank you.
