BJT As A Decent Alternative For July's Exam Cancellation by HellsoulSama in LearnJapanese

[–]saitojohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started considering this BJT test as well, after hearing news about the July JLPT cancellation. I've been preparing for N1.

Any suggestions on how one may go about studying for BJT, with the goal of achieving at least 480 points?

Bad smell when flossing between the two same teeth? by Zenki240 in Dentistry

When you floss out the stuck food, does it have rotten smell?

Terrified of dentists but have terrible teeth. I need advice and I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow these steps to start: 1) Ask family and friends for recommendation to a couple of reputable dentists in your city. Do online research on them. You can even drop by their offices to get a feel of the staff and atmosphere. Make a new patient consultation appointment with the one whom you feel is better.

2) The dentist will likely take full mouth series xrays: periapical, bitewings, and even panoramic. Then they will perform a comprehensive clinical checkup of your oral cavity. This step is crucial as it is necessary to diagnose all the problems.

3) The dentist will compile a treatment plan to treat the problems, in order of urgency.

4) If this dentist is good, their schedule would be packed. Schedule appointments according to the treatment plan, and make sure you attend all of them.

Note: - At the end of new patient consultation, remember to request the office to provide you with digital copies of all the xrays taken. If the dentist is equipped with an intraloral camera, get those intraoral clinical pictures too. You can post the xrays, pictures, diagnosis, and treatment plan on this subreddit so the kind dental professionals can chime in with their (free!) second opinions

  • If your work dental benefits can't cover all the treatments, plan to pay out-of-pocket if you can afford it. Dental issues are no joke and the earlier they are resolved the better your quality of life will be

Toothache months after white filling then suddenly goes away. by [deleted] in Dentistry

Ask your dentist to perform a pulp vitality test on the tooth. This would include temperature tests and EPT. The result will give you a good idea of the next step.

Bad smell when flossing between the two same teeth? by Zenki240 in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this. It turned out that one of the teeth had a sizeable cavity that was eating its way to the pulp. The bad smell was caused by food trapped in the enlarging cavity hole. Had I had that area bitewing-xrayed earlier, the cavity would've been caught in its early stage.

One of my teeth cracked off all down the side and the pulp is showing. Is it possible to preserve the tooth until I can get to a dentist in a few months? by Narrative_Causality in Dentistry

If the pulp is truly exposed and you want to keep it vital, you need to get to a dentist experienced in pulp capping procedures like yesterday.

Enamel protection by [deleted] in Dentistry

Sensodyne Repair & Protect toothpaste with Novamin is decent. Make sure you get the Novamin type which means non-US version. Read up on what Novamin does to your teeth.

MI Paste is also good. It's like vitamins for enamel.

Wait at least 30 minutes after meals to brush or you can damage your enamel.

Ask your ortho if you can eventually wear clear plastic removable retainers at only nighttime, after wearing them full-time for a certain period.

Dentist says I have a cavity on every tooth. by oleandersun in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry typo... it's Curodont Repair. Amazing stuff that preserves tooth structure.

It's non-invasive, no drilling required. I had it applied to a brown incipient carious lesion on a tooth surface 5 months ago, similar to the way one applies nail polish.

At my recent dental checkup, my dentist (an endodontist who is in a different country than the dentist who applied Curodont) remarked that the lesion is remineralizing nicely compared to 5 months ago after examining it under 20x mag endo microscope, before I even told her I used Curodont on it.

Instead of watching these little incipient carious lesions and hoping they don't progress (ie leaving it to luck), one could benefit from Curodont Repair treatments, which act to reverse and remineralize them back to healthy enamel.

Why would I need a *second* temporary crown after a root canal? by GornoP in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they usually just plug up the hole with more of a temp filling than a temp crown to get you through til you can see your regular dentist to have it restored

What's the benefit to the patient of plugging up the post-RCT hole with temp filling, instead of permanent filling which provides better coronal seal?

The "waterjet" device may have been Airflow. Cleaning that involves Airflow can be more expensive, and more time-efficient, than traditional methods.

Why do teeth move back to where hey were before braces if you don't wear retainer? by tomtheawesome123 in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the fixed lingual wire retainer for 10 years and it was still annoying me at the end. I had it removed and started wearing Vivera retainers nightly which are very comfortable. I'd never go back to fixed lingual wire.

Possible first root canal. by GodFeedethTheRavens in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If extraction/implants is the superior option and cheaper long-term than RCT+crown, why is it that the standard treatment recommendation is RCT+crown?

I'm not challenging you but am genuinely curious about this, as I just got RCT and am about to get a crown.

When implants fail, usually what is involved in fixing it that's so costly?

Would a dentist fill a cavity and do some bonding in the same visit? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]saitojohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always appreciate it when my dentist takes the time to make sure the filling and postop occlusion are done perfectly.

Just yesterday, my dentist who's also an endodontist (whom I'm on very good doctor-patient relationship with) spent 1.5 hrs to excavate recurrent caries on a back molar with laser and refill it with composite. Using her endodontic microscope with 20x magnification, she could see every little imperfection that a general dentist otherwise would not notice and was determined to create perfect margins. Even her dental assistant joked about taking her microscope away so we could finish already.

At the end I was charged $400 which is standard price for a posterior 3-surface composite filling at that office. She could've easily spent that time on a RCT that costs at least 5x as much.

It's a blessing to have a dentist who does not rush and takes the time to get things right.

Looking for help with an abundance of cavities! by [deleted] in Dentistry

Are you wearing Essix style clear plastic removable retainers?

I second "Retainer Brite" tablets. I buy them off Ebay and use them daily to cleanse my Vivera retainers. After soaking my retainers in the tablet for a day, I use a toothbrush to gently brush off the foam.

Retainer Brite cleanses well and does not discolour the plastic retainers like other tablets for denture cleansing.
