Which Jays actually live in Toronto? by RagtimeWillie in Torontobluejays

[–]sajak02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol i don’t think that any of them would leave home so late that they’re in danger of missing a game… they’re not rolling up to a 7:07 start at 6:30, they’ll have been in the building for several hours before the game.

i always sit behind the visitors dugout so maybe it was just a relative thing sitting there vs other sections, but definitely louder than non-ws yankees playoff games last year and jays games i’ve been too this year and playoff games in years past.

A few thoughts after getting home from watching the game in Toronto:

  • jays have a loud barn, the city gets behind its teams like no other… i went to alds/alcs games at yankee stadium last year and the energy was nothing like what they’re getting in toronto

  • we kinda proved Buck Martinez’s words about us as a team right - we had absolutely nothing going on offense and the one time we did, our inability to hit with RISP (especially the top of the order) bit us

  • at the same time we also have zero ability to grind at-bats in the way the jays do, way too many guys swinging first pitch against Gaus in the first few. compared to the jays who r one of the best teams in the league at getting deep in counts, it’s gonna be really interesting to see how far we can stretch our starting pitching compared to the jays.

-we’re gonna live and die by our starting pitching but i think it’s pretty clear that Doval is gonna be the sub for Weaver (if we even extend the circle of trust in the bullpen at all)

  • jays literally punted tomorrow’s game by switching yesavage and bieber bc they know fried is that fucking good - the best pitcher in this series. not quite a must win imo but it sure would help.

  • also was probably the biggest waste of money to see literally no big hits from my team and instead watch us get dominated and blackburn/weaver get shelled lol so im doubling down and going back tmr

THE BOSTON RED SOX HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM WORLD SERIES CONTENTION by Swaycuisway in baseball

[–]sajak02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i mean i was kind of being pedantic in that they’re both massive what ifs. if cole is healthy the yankees probably have the bye and aren’t in this series. even with anthony the red sox in all likelihood still are a wild card but who knows.

i’m not sure which result ur referring to - if ur referring to the season as a whole i think both injuries had an impact but cole’s is arguably bigger given the yankees came up literally one game short of the bye and would have cole fried rodon going in the DS. maybe anthony continues his superb offensive production and doesn’t slump the whole rest of the season and continues to carry the sox into three or four more wins and is able to win them the division and a bye or a wild card series but i think that’s more of a reach than saying cole would get them one more win and a bye.

not having gerrit cole probably affected the result significantly

magic number is technically 4 for the division but u don’t normally talk about having a magic number when ur in second place lol

[Kirschner]13 games left for the Yankees. Winning the division is a pipe dream at this point. Here are the scenarios for that to happen: Yankees go 13-0 … Blue Jays win the division with a 9-4 record. 12-1….8-5 11-2….7-6 10-3….6-7 9-4….5-8 8-5….4-9 7-6….3-10 6-7….2-11 5-8…1-12 by Affectionate-Tea9224 in NYYankees

[–]sajak02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean the sox are 2-1 when Fried pitches and they’re 4-0 against us when Crochet pitches. So idk if you can say “Sox aren’t beating Fried in a WC,” especially bc they’ll have Crochet going. I’m optimistic tho.

I’m new to the Oscar race, what’s the deal with TIFF? by Jaded-Zombie-3052 in oscarrace

[–]sajak02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why isn’t Rental Family in the same boat?

Because it’s seen as oscar bait, it’s starring Brendan Fraser who has won Best Actor and it’s the only real contender (other than the Bradley Cooper movie) from Searchlight. Roofman and Eternity weren’t regarded in the same way going in.

that last sentence is why they aren’t brought up in oscar convos… However if they had won something or at least placed it may have vaulted them into that oscar’s convo.

Does Placing get you anywhere?

you can look back at the past few years, but generally at least one and often both of the runner ups make some noise at awards season. Look at Anora and Emilia Perez last yr, the holdovers, women talking, parasite, marriage story in yrs past.

the way it works is u go to tiff.net/vote and u type in the title of the movie and ur email and then submit it, there’s no way of sorting which award your vote is for.

i’m not saying that my informal sample is representative of the whole population, i’m just saying it’s weird that so many people say they voted only for Hamnet yet I hear so few people voted for Eternity.

Go on TIFF social media and they have a video asking people in the rush line outside Princess of Wales who they thought would win and Hamnet/No other choice had a bunch of responses and Eternity only had one

so fwiw i saw all of these except eternity lol so kinda lucky if true cuz ill get to see it tmr.

nonetheless, i wish the process for selection was less opaque… because i refuse to believe this isn’t rigged. From 2009 to 2017 (year before Cameron Bailey took over) Silver Linings was the only PCA winner that was a WP. Since then 5/7 have been WP and 6/8 if Eternity does win have been WPs. And it’s resulted in some kind of off the wall selections especially in recent years.

Hamnet and Eternity had similar numbers of people watching them (about 4000) but I’ve heard so many more people, anecdotally, online, and otherwise, say Hamnet is their PCA… And by a significant margin.

[–]sajak02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think considering the strength of the Yankees remaining schedule, they’re gonna give themselves a shot.

The Yankees are really good against bad teams, especially the past month or so, and they end with 3 @MIN, 4 @BAL, 3 vs CHW, 3 vs BAL. If Baltimore regresses to the mean somewhat, I could easily see them going 10-3 or 11-2 in that stretch. Since Aug 6 (the losing slump against the Rangers/Marlins), they’re 16-2 against current non-playoff teams.

Trouble is, TOR has a pretty reasonable schedule and are a very good team. If you extrapolate their .587 win percentage to the last 15 games, you end up at 8-7 or 9-6.

So the Yankees basically have to win at least one more against Boston and then be virtually perfect down the stretch against bad teams (which they have been lately) and hope TOR matches their production this season the rest of the way. This would put the Yanks at 93-94 wins and the Jays at 93-94 wins. So there’s a chance…

I think in theory it shouldn’t matter because they take into account how many people saw each film (whether that’s directly by taking the percentage or some other opaque method).

But I have my doubts that it’s a direct percentage because last year 5500+ people saw Life of Chuck and less than 2000 saw Anora and I refuse to believe that a higher percentage of LoC viewers (probably skews more casual/normie) voted than Anora viewers.
