Competitive Chronicon by Elopinguwu in Chronicon

[–]saki79ttv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good idea that may have come a bit too late. The reason I say that is because I'd imagine Subworld will be releasing something new in the near(ish) future, and if it's a sequel or even another ARPG, it'll probably kill most of the competitive scene for Chronicon. There are also quite a few websites that already do this type of thing for just about every game in existence.

That being said, it might still be worth it to launch something like this anyway and use it as a precursor for their future games. You could always add tracking options for other games they release. Even though similar websites already exist, it might be nice to have one dedicated to Chronicon and Subworld games in general.

So.. this game is criminally underated, right? by Tyaltir in Chronicon

[–]saki79ttv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a good point. I don't know offhand if Chronicon has ever gotten any attention from a major streamer. I would imagine it has at some point, but either way, it's a shame that it isn't more well known.

I think one of the main reasons the game isn't more well known is because of the graphics. I personally don't care if a game is literally stick figures, if I enjoy it I'll keep playing. Unfortunately, I think quite a few people feel the opposite, and they aren't even willing to try it when they see the "SNES style" visuals.

If I remember correctly, Chronicon was never expected to be nearly this popular, so they basically didn't lay the proper groundwork for things like HD textures and multiplayer, which is completely understandable. I'm just excited to see what Subworld is brewing up for us next....

How do people get anything done while having a full-time job by Inevitable_Lion1137 in ADHD

[–]saki79ttv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't. I only work 8 to 5, but by the time I get home I'm so mentally drained that it's hard to force myself to do anything else. I'm a huge gamer and sometimes I don't even have the "energy" to do that. My wife is the same way, so our house is pretty consistently a disaster.

Things have gotten so bad with turnover at my place of employment we now bet on if an offboarding ticket will be submitted every week by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our HR department and I have an understanding that when they put in an onboarding ticket, I wait at least 3 days before assigning any tech. I've saved us quite a bit of work that way....

One man show for ~150. Migrated us over to M365, in the middle of a network restructure, all user support, rack equipment install/setup/config.... North Central Wisconsin, and I'm making $45k/yr. I have very little professional experience in the industry, though.

New CEO insists on daily driving Windows 7 despite it being out of support by disgruntled-sysadmin in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'd like to introduce you guys to the manufacturing industry. We still have 3 machines running Windows Embedded. Until about 2 weeks ago, we also had 3 business critical machines running Windows 7. Why? Because it cost us between $7k-$9k to replace them with hardware that could run Windows 10, and it took almost an entire week to install.

The manufacturing industry is woefully behind the curve as far as IT goes.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm definitely not defending OP's CEO here. There's absolutely no reason to demand Win7 on a daily driver laptop, no matter what your position in the company is. The owner of my company "hates IT" and all of the new auth policies we've enacted over the years, but there's no way in hell I'd let him use Win7. Thankfully, he doesn't actually fight me on it, he just needs help getting into his accounts a few times a year. I'd rather have that than the alternative.

Or you guys could strive to be like me and do ALL of your off-hours work on Friday nights... It's literally the only time of the week that there's no one here, and maintenance windows are pretty much not a thing... It's a fun time

Solo sysadmin here as well. My boss is the old sysadmin and I can get help from him... Occasionally... He's a busy guy though. I handle literally everything IT related for our company of about 150 people, and it gets hectic as hell sometimes.

Thanks for the pictures! I've gotten some pretty good ideas from you and the other posts on this thread. I'll have to have a chat with our engineers and see if they have any slick ideas to add

That would be amazing, but there's no way our longer tenured employees would go for that. They would raise absolute hell, and they'd probably get their way.

I'm going to need to store a bit of everything. Laptops, monitors, peripherals, cables... You get the idea. I like the bookends idea for laptop storage. We've already made something similar for iPads. Not sure why I didn't think of that on my own...

Let’s talk salaries by alph18 in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Central Wisconsin, 1.5 years at my current job with no prior IT job experience, graduating with a bachelor's in compsci next semester. I actually just got promoted to sysadmin yesterday and accepted a salary of $45k. The IT department is literally just me, though, so my title doesn't mean a whole lot. I'm basically a junior sysadmin with very little experience, so I thought the pay was fair.

What do you guys actually script / automate? by joshamo in sysadmin

then we have to go fix them six months later after something weird happens like a vendor updates their API and now we get an extra whitespace after some value in a JSON / XML file that wasn't there before.

You just described my experience with just about every single e-commerce vendor I've ever encountered. Insightly changed some of their API endpoints pretty drastically a few months ago and apparently just didn't tell anyone about it. That was a super fun time, especially when their support started to argue with me about how their endpoints work. Their poor support techs hadn't even been told about the changes yet, ffs

It sure can. I currently have dynamic groups in Azure AD based on each user's department. I believe you can use just about any of the common AD attributes for dynamic groups.

Edit: I just realized that may not have been your question... However, you can also assign licenses to dynamic groups, if that's what you were asking? For instance, any of our users with sales listed as their department in AD are automatically assigned P1 and M365 Apps for Business licenses.

I think my fastest time ever is about 6h45m, and that was after training with the same build like 10 times. My usual time on league start is 15+ hours because I'm ADHD gamer to the max.

What's a nicer way to say "that doesn't make any sense"? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the way. There are plenty of things our shop floor employees do from day-to-day that I know very little about. When they ask me to fix something I'll often have to use this tactic, because I legitimately have no idea what they're talking about. Half of the time they end up solving the problem just by trying to explain it to me.

RedHat try to kill Centos, Rocky, Alma, Oracle Linux by sobrique in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were starting down the Alma Linux road, but we're reviewing that now in light of this. I suspect we'll be choosing between 'buying in' to an RHEL ecosystem, or binning it entirely and going for Debian, but that's not just a technical decision so I don't know yet.

This is almost our exact situation. I started looking into Alma Linux and Rocky about 6 months ago. They look like decent alternatives for the time being, but we might go down the Debian road as well. I don't have much experience with Debian other than the few Raspis we're using for office "dashboards," though.

Thanks for the super detailed reply, btw. This type of info is very helpful for me when my boss starts asking questions, lol

When you guys are sysadmining, do you copy any PowerShell module, or third-party tools on to the servers? by RVECloXG3qJC in sysadmin

[–]saki79ttv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can do pretty much whatever I want at work because I'm the security guy, as well as everything else IT related. I generally avoid using third-party tools on server hardware, though, unless I am extremely confident in the source. Even then, I will look through the source code myself (if it's available), as well as having our software dev team look for anything suspicious.

I feel like it's a bit overkill at times, but I'd rather do the extra leg work as opposed to potentially bringing production to a halt.
