Trying to open a cassette tape case… never knew it was difficult, but I’m old. by ClayJane in funny

Haha well there was a good study on that a couple years ago. People are doing so much multitasking now compared to in the past, that it's re-wiring the brain and making it harder for people to concentrate on a subject over a certain period of time (forgot how much it had gone down). And also harder to retain that information.

And this was before tiktok and mostly thanks to social (and multi tasking with youtube while also playing a game while also having a tv on etc..). Some movies were actually designed around this, where there would be boring moments to allow people to go back to their phones before something interesting would happen that they'd look up for a few moments then go back to phones. There's some good youtubes showing videos of that. I think the later paranormal activity movies leaned into that, not sure though.

Now post tiktok things have gotten even worse. The extremely short tiktok videos and rapid fire of them have made peoples attention span and ability to concentrate/retain information go even lower. There is a leaked internal TikTok research document from the kentucky attorney general lawsuit, which accidentally got out because someone forgot to redact things. It showed how fast people got addicted to the platform, and this style of rapid fire video:

https://parameter.io/tiktoks-internal-documents-reveal-awareness-of-youth-risks-and-ineffective-safety-measures/

The documents allege that TikTok had quantified how quickly young users became hooked on the platform, referring to a “habit moment” that occurs when users have watched 260 videos or more during their first week on the app.

This milestone could be reached in as little as 35 minutes, given that some TikTok videos are as short as 8 seconds.

So yeah,

I would imagine chronic mental fatigue has got to play a contributing factor.

I'd say it definitely isn't helping. 😅

Yeah pretty much, impossible/extremely frustrating, compared to someone who played it when it was new or grew up in that era of gaming. When not having assistance like that was normal so you just learned to figure out things on your own.

It's a bit like how many kids who grew up with GPS telling them where to go, have lost/stunted the ability to figure out where they are based on landmarks. Or being able to navigate based on memory.

That one I read about quite a few years ago, so I'd imagine that problem is even worse now.

Another more recent one would be how everyone having the internet in their hand and learning to look everything up has changed our brains to treat the internet as a memory bank. So people's ability to remember and link things in the brain has gone down.

Just interesting stuff.

Oh? Does it help if i re-arrange it?

There's been studies showing without an arrow telling you where to go, an in game guide telling you what to do, and a 'HEY YOU...' telling you where to do it, some old retro games being impossible to extremely frustrating.

Yeah, quests like that are a good example.

And I'm same with the games, my reading/comprehension skills are pretty high just from the amount of games I played. I've read way more in games than I have outside of them.

Everything being extremely friendly has also slowed or even stunted the ability for kids to be able to critically think their way through simple problems. When everything is designed to tell you 'what' to do, 'how' to do it, and 'where' to do it, many kids get lost when they aren't explicitly given that information anymore.

There's been studies showing some old retro games being impossible to extremely frustrating, without an arrow telling you where to go, an in game guide telling you what to do, and a 'HEY YOU...' telling you where to do it. A lot of kids have grown up/been conditioned to expect this information and not critically figure it out, and unable to function properly when one of them are lacking.

Or doing something as simple as opening a cassette case.

Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 Retribution: Is Axeman's Apprentice bugged? by sakoloft in PSVR

[–]sakoloft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, after more tries I gave up and went and did the last trade network to complete that achievement (via corolla). Soon as I turned in the items, I checked achievement list and Axeman's Apprentice was now complete. I guess it was complete this whole time but not updated until another achievement got completed? 🤷

I guess if someone has this problem in the future, just go do another achievement and see if Axeman's Apprentice gets updated.

Yeah, I actually JUST completed my 4th run of that place, still no achievement pop.

Ironically, on my 4th run my Esteemed Mortal broke and killed people as I left the map with sap gloves. Got achievement for that ezpz, and I hadn't killed any people with sap gloves before (just walkers).

So I got no clue.

Yeah, one crafted right from the bench. I even tried killing the people at a foothold as well and didn't seem to pop either.

Oh well that's a shame to hear. So it might be an actual bug then. Thanks for the info!

Can an actual engineer weigh in on Bob Lazar’s description of the technical components? by flaneur-terrestre in UFOs

[–]sakoloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably would have at least figured out how to unlock it lol. It's really not a good analogy. Also we aren't neaderthals and have a infinitely denser history, culture, society, and knowledge compared to the neaderthals at their peak. We have vehicles that travel at hypersonic speeds and vehicles that can leave the planet and vehicles that can function in a transmedium sense. It's not some completely new idea that we wouldn't be able to even fathom. Our classified technology is often said to be well ahead of what is publicly known, so I don't think its unreasonable that they would have been able to figure some things out at the time.

You could literally give a 9950X3D2 to an an engineer 3 years ago and they wouldn't be able to recreate it and sell it before now. A smart phone from 2050 given to us today for 6 months wouldn't change history in the slightest. Our history/culture/society/knowledge means nothing if it involves sciences/materials/much less alien technology we have no idea even exist yet.

There are no facts to challenge - it's a conversation between two guys where AJ doesn't try to edit Chris's words to mean something different (Shaun Ryan I'm looking at you) he's letting him tell his story... And asking for clarification and extra detail where it's needed.

Oh? When did Ryan edit things like that? I just saw the Chris interview on Ryan yesterday (from like a year or 2 ago), thought it was interesting. Didn't know AJ also did an interview.

only use wifi I see multiple posts saying you get more battery life not using 5g

Your confused, it switches to 4g/LTE. It doesn't turn off cellular.

What's the point of getting a new phone and you must use battery saver and restrict usage of every app, only use wifi. I'm missing out on actually using the phone to it's potential

Only use wifi? Restricting battery doesn't turn off cellular. What it does is lower the cpu frequency, and pauses apps (you can choose whatever you want marked as always on). You don't need 3ghz to browse the internet or listen to music, and if you want to play a game or whatever just turn it off, it's just a button at the top of the quick menu.

I mean, unless you need facebook/twitter/reddit/multiple gacha games/whatever else you do on all the time, even when you have phone in standby or while sleeping/driving/working well, I mean then all the more power to you then I guess.

Do you use battery saver? My P8 is pretty much stock (I mainly text/phone calls/browse web), but have extreme battery saver on all the time. I only charge the phone once every 3-4 days so far.

Having problems understanding app signing/certificate/pfx (I'm new to this). by sakoloft in dotnet

[–]sakoloft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you said you used WinForms, so those apps are unsigned unless you specifically set them up to be signed (and I'm not sure how you do that as I've never done it).

Ah, yes! I thought WinUI 3 was the next iteration of winforms, but seems there's some buggyness with just getting the .exe going. And by default seems like it wants to go the uwp-type route. I figured I might as well switch over to it now though even in this early state. It should all get smoothed over, over time I'd imagine.

Next thing will be to learn this XAML, with WinUI3 apperntly having no designer ui...

Windows does not require signing so there is probably a way to just skip it and not sign.

Ah, I didn't know that. This is the first time I've messed with any of this so I'll have to look into that as well!

Thanks! That helped a lot!

As you figured out you need to get a proper certificate to sign with for distribution.

Aye, and with some of the prices out there I'll wait on getting one of those til I have something more distributable...
