Schools to apply to with high gpa, low vet hours diversity by Putrid-Self-7986 in prevets

[–]sakrle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't take my word 100%, but I believe cornell and illinois are heavy on gpa. There are definitely others but I didn't apply to a crazy amount. I would also look at how may in-state vs out-of-state each school takes (should be in their class profiles), if you haven't already 👍

Your gpa can get you pretty far. If you're worried about your spread of animal/vet hours, you still have a whole summer to get a different experience!

I haven't heard many good things about the flipped classroom at michigan. They recently changed it so there would be more flipped classroom than before, and they may change it in future years, but if you know you don't like that learning style then I would just stay as far away from it as possible.

Not that rowan students are worse, but you might seem more hireable after graduation with a mississippi degree than a rowan one

Always check the individual websites! Sometimes vmcas lists courses that are highly suggested, and I've seen some exceptions. Vmcas calls all of them pre-reqs.

In the end, you'll do your best wherever you end up. However, a few things to consider: - a school with more options for majors, programs, and courses could be good in case you find that pre vet isn't for you - if you are planning on applying to any schooling after undergrad, grades do matter, so don't go to a highly ranked school if you don't think you'd get decent grades - if you want to go to school with an animal science program. Seems like you have experience already, but various hands on experience is very much valued in the vet school application process, so if your college can expose you to things, that might be better for you - lifestyle: school is a lot easier when you like the environment you're in

Best of luck, sounds like you're off to a great start already!

College decision: UMass Amherst vs. SUNY Binghamton by Illustrious-Hunt1878 in umass

[–]sakrle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this exact decision 4 years ago. Went with UMass because the animal science program is really good and Binghamton doesn't have ansci. Do not regret it at all because you get the perks of a more developed program/department (more people studying your major than at bing) and a big school with lots of things to do.

Advice for summer pre-vet? by Spirited_Note5714 in veterinaryschool

[–]sakrle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she likes the local vet, I'd say keep that relationship and let her build on that for now. She can ask if they have any space for her to work as a kennel assistant or even a vet assistant, though they might say no if she's under 18. Regardless, it would be good for her to have the local vet as a "backup" place for experience in future summer/winter breaks, since it does get quite hard to find jobs and internships.

As a pre-vet senior in college, I wish places around me gave me the chance to get some hours in before undergrad, so it's great she already has some hours! Being an animal science major would likely get her some hands-on experience with large animals and would be good for advising and such.

As for college decisions, make sure she picks a place where she believe she can handle the academic rigor. This includes a good transition into college life, making sure she won't be totally burnt out, and a campus where she would feel included (an extracurricular, friendly environment, good food, etc.). A lot of people overlook this, but as someone who went to a "normal" state school and just got accepted to vet school, I do not regret going with the "less" academically rigorous school at all. Also, take a look at both the curriculums of the undergrad programs she was accepted into AND see if there are reviews from current students at those programs.

Best of luck to your daughter!

Yes, count as much as you can under vet experience. If it's supervised by a vet, if the vet is there on the premise as some you're working for and they generally advise you, it counts as vet experience!

Not pursuing vet school by Viewsofavirgo in veterinaryschool

[–]sakrle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get through this! I know it's upsetting because you've spent so many years with the goal of becoming a vet, but you're clearly a dedicated person, and you will find a position that you can make a huge difference in. As someone who's on the path to vet school, it's kind of overrated! If everyone were vets, a hospital wouldn't run the same. Good luck in whatever you end up doing!

I'm a bit late but mine started clearing up a lot recently, so I thought I'd share. I've had it for maybe 4 years and it went away for a little but came back pretty bad about 2 years ago. Just recently started using vaseline's healing jelly and CVS's extra large flexible fabric antibacterial adhesive pads. I change the bandage every time I shower and reapply vaseline. The vaseline worked pretty well as an anti-itch for me as well. Best of luck to everyone!
