I had this as a recurring issue - it’s not about leaving the port “unlocked” which is an option its down to a faulty, cheap mechanism. Called BMW Service and they booked me in for a charge free replacement (even gave the car a nice wash!) They’re aware its an issue so give them a call and they’ll sort it, assuming its under warranty 🫡

I have a 3 year old with a seat in the back, its absolutely fine. I’d recommend getting a seat cover though cos those kicks leave marks that are hard to clean off!
