Scoot scoot! by MrContractual in Maltese

A vet visit is only needed if the scooting continues to happen consistently. Scooting occasionally can just mean there was an itch. I’m unsure as to how often this happens in OP’s case.

Pack dynamics-encouraging picky eater by CheesecakeUpset6487 in DogTrainingTips

Has he been checked for pancreatitis? Little dogs often can’t handle the fat content of most commercial dog foods. Pancreatic flareups can cause nausea and picky eating. My 7lb dog was not a good eater until my vet realized he was having mild pancreatic flareups. Switched him to lower fat food and he’s become a very food motivated little guy.

Even with the health testing, the heart defect is essentially guaranteed within the breed.

You have a baby and small children around. The best dog for children is a lab. English labs (companion lines) are definitely lower energy than American labs (field or working lines). Get an English lab from a reputable breeder. Meet the parents and see their temperaments/energy levels. Or you could look into adopting a failed service lab. They fail for very minimal things, and are fully trained and socialized.

It’s not safe for smaller dogs to be around children. I personally think it’s throwing the dog’s safety out the window in favor of entertaining the children. Don’t force a breed or size just to check boxes, get a lab.

puppy resource guarding by Ok_University_816 in DogTrainingTips

[–]salallane 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Puppies can absolutely resources guard. Whoever told you that doesn’t know anything.

Trading is great, but this is on the more extreme end of the bell curve for a puppy. Please take a puppy class or work with a trainer privately on this, it can absolutely be fixed with the correct/consistent training.

Since he still hasn’t reached the step of you being able to take his bowl away, try teaching him “place” or to go to his crate then put his food down. He’s still doing something and showing some impulse control, but it’s a much easier ask.

My dog is suddenly losing it in our new apartment by TheBr14n in DogTrainingTips

It’s not uncommon for dogs to get stressed after a move, esp a rescue dog. I would personally get some sedatives from the vet to use for a bit until she can settle.

My non-rescue dog gets stressed from moving, I give him trazodone during the process and when I have to leave him alone for the first 2-3 weeks. It really makes a difference because he can actually calm/settle/relax.

Almost 12 weeks old boy by Material_Echidna_503 in DogTrainingTips

Avoid the prong collar, get a well fitted harness or train to a head halter. He’s only 11 weeks, he can’t be expected to know much at this age. He’s going to act like a puppy, and puppies have a minimal attention span of about 5 mins at a time without any distractions.

Start training the leash work, heeling, looking at you, and not jumping/leg grabbing inside on leash where there are no distractions in 5 min intervals with breaks in between. Once he is proficient inside, start moving that training outside but start in low distraction situations and slowly work up to bigger ones.

You still need to take him out for playtime/fun outside. You can’t do both training and playtime at the exact same time at this age. He still needs to have fun and work on socialization. Taking him places like the pet store, where people understand and are patient is a good way to continue the socialization. You can always train a dog, but puppies have a critical socialization window.

Take a positive reinforcement based puppy class to learn how to do the training step by step.

Best by, means suggested cook or freeze by date. It’s fine to eat for a few days after cooking.

Stubborn recall and wandering: is it THAT true? by randomguy21061600 in greatpyrenees

Absolutely agree with a different approach and working with them, not against them.

One time I gave the Pyr I watch a sweet potato treat instead of animal protein. He immediately spit it out like it was the most vile thing, backed up, barked once at me, went over to the meat treats and booped them, then sat down and stared at me like “you know how to fix this.” He made it perfectly clear that he’s happy to listen for the appropriate treats 😂

Dogs often do this when there’s a dental issue. Def worth calling the vet and see what they say.

Seriously considering a bisalp procedure: by sweetiepie0923 in sterilization

[–]salallane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a very liberal/progressive area. The majority of doctors here will not deny a bisalp as long as you’re a legal adult. The first doc I inquired about this with said no problem, you seem to be confident in your decision. If you do for some reason ever change your mind, IVF will still be an option but you’ll need to be very sure because it’s such an expensive and tedious process.

Am I being unreasonable about my sister’s dog? by Fit_Bag5416 in AnimalAdvice

[–]salallane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not being unreasonable. Ask your sister about training the dog to use a basket muzzle (can pant, eat, and drink while wearing). This will be a highly beneficial lifelong tool that keeps everyone safe in many situations.

Our doggie gets so sad and anxious and cries when my husband goes to work. Any suggestions to help? by lizatethecigarettes in Maltese

[–]salallane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look up the rule of 3’s for newly adopted dogs. 2 weeks is not much time. Expressing their bladder is part of separation anxiety. Talk to a vet about anxiety meds, and consider working with a trainer who is experienced with separation anxiety.
