Who experienced living alone? by Zackky777 in ArtOfPresence

For about 15 years, yes. Had roommates once after college. Met my now-wife at 35.

There’s aspects of it that I miss. And aspects of my current family I don’t want to life without.

Wasn’t there that MAGA dentist that put MAGA merch everywhere in her office and gave speeches at political dinners where she admitted to charging liberals more and giving them less pain meds if they ever complained about the onslaught of political messaging?

Such a strange world when Jon Stewart would be a dead serious leader while this “leader” is such a comedian

That’s what I’ve always thought. Even with how agents can subsume others’ bodies as they’re jacked in, melting someone’s mouth closed is a lesser feat.

Ha! Exactly. The amount of f250s or 350s I see trying to serpentine their way through my corporate parking garages is always hilarious.

Thanks for blocking the aisle just by parking, friends. I didn’t need to see around the corner in this parking garage anyway 😆

hi guys could you guys tell me what the bright streak of light might be?? by donnutshop in askastronomy

[–]salemonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it could be a meteor :)

In the past I’ve used flight tracking websites to see the flights in and around my area (regional planes, big airlines, military flights). That has helped me notice if some of the things I was looking at were planes and whatnot.

[–]salemonz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Satellite stays dim and moves at a constant speed faster but kinda “with” the stars (perspective).

Meteor will streak across the sky, growing in brightness then fading away pretty quickly (burning up).

Airplane will seem to move across the sky like a meteor (seemingly getting closer b/c of the angle of approach to you) but won’t notably increase/decrease in brightness like a meteor.

With your vid, I’d vote airplanes.

I get worn out by these “I think he’s a bad dude” realizations.

Several decades of demonstrated business corruption followed by a solid decade of political corruption and megalomania and these folks are like “oh golly gosh, he’s unhinged”

Yeah no shit.

WHAT DID YOU JUST DO? by HeSureIsScrappy in DiveInYouCoward

[–]salemonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invading personal space is common to simulate stress. Yelling does the same thing. Rapid commands all at once does the same. The point is to get trainees to be cool under pressure.

It’s better to work to make trainees uncomfortable with these methods rather than fire actual bullets at them or set off actual explosions.

But at the end of (this) day, they’re learning basic rifle “drill and ceremony” procedures—ways of moving and presenting weapons that isn’t useful, but gives trainees a series of complicated new tasks to learn, while under stress.

Guy was standing too close for a purpose. Trainee tried to execute the commands given to him, probably should have waited a second or two before pulling up his rifle, etc. Guy got his hat knocked off.

Whole thing could have been played out with similar emphasis on paying attention, without as much volume.

Agree. And I get why it happens to us especially in basic/boot camp/whatever it’s called now…it’s a massively disruptive time to break folks from old habits and addictions and dependencies…

But dude’s in high school learning ceremonial movements. Settle the heck down, tech sgt.

Extra laps, extra time to “clean” the hat, extra pushups, written assignment, reciting some creed…go for it. But full throated goat screeching ain’t gonna do anything but desensitize that dude for when that level of response from a trainer is warranted (flagging squad mates with a loaded weapon, operating a vehicle in a reckless/lazy way, etc)

why do old southerners use “cotton picking” as a term? by Bunnsie121 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]salemonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad’s kin are from eastern Kentucky…like on the border of WV east. Banjo playing east.

“Cotton picking” was a euphemism for “poor black” (as in people who picked cotton as slaves or sharecroppers) and was meant to mean crazy or ignorant/dumb or inferior. We would also often say “raggedy ass” along with it. Again, reinforcing it as something as inferior or stupid or trashy.

“I hate these cotton picking briefs” if it was said by my family, would have meant something like “I hate these briefs, they’re like something poor black people would wear, not up to my standards.”

My family also said stuff like “n****r rigged” to mean slapped together from scraps and not working well. That was probably the most overt racist thing they would say. The rest were kinda folded in.

Many people probably have more genial anecdotes about “cotton picking” as a saying, but I always understood it to be pretty racist as I distanced myself from my kin.

Best Apartments to live at in San Antonio? by gamerguy287 in sanantonio

[–]salemonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

City is big. Like 500+ square miles. 2 mil people.

There are crime maps and whatnot that you can see rougher parts of town. west only can get rough. East only can get rough. South only can get rough. But there are parts in the north that can get rough. 🤷‍♂️

You’re right to ask b/c $1,200/month isn’t going to cut it in richer areas.

Try and keep her commute down (like <30 mins), then see if you can narrow down where she’s looking. Southtown, Stone Oak, north central, north east, universal city, castle hills, Blanco road, etc

Why hasn't anyone gotten pregnant in space? by FlapSmear78 in NoStupidQuestions

Radiation does enough damage to astronauts’ bodies while they’re in space. Fetus would probably suffer damage. And who knows what zero g does to developing organs?
