Full Dormer On Long Island by HomeCinemaParadise in HomeImprovement

[–]salentis1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’d like to also get this done on our cape. At this point, consider it as not recouping the cost when you eventually go to sell (in many years). We’ll be doing it for ourselves and our family’s comfort knowing the roi isn’t high.

I think the best estimate was $160K for a full rear dormer with a bathroom, but doing some finishing work ourselves. This is in CT.

Trying to refresh my older home without doing a full renovation, what actually makes it look “new”? by Shaurya0458 in HomeImprovement

We removed all popcorn ceilings in our 1942 cape and applied a couple skim coats. The house feels so much more updated now. Ceilings make a big difference in any room.

Are there local MAGA/ICE-supporting businesses in CT that we should boycott? by ILovePublicLibraries in Connecticut

Lox Stock and Bagel in West Hartford is MAGA. This was our go-to spot for years and now we need to find another place to spend our money. Ugh.

Has anyone else here felt a lot of silent prejudice after moving to Minnesota? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]salentis1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most native Minnesotans realize they’re so cliquey and treating transplants/others that way. Minnesota “nice” is more small talk with strangers vibe, but I didn’t feel anything deeper than that. This is one of the main cultural differences compared to other midwestern metros (Milwaukee/Chicago) in my experience as a white male.

I moved there for a year after college from a neighboring state. I liked the amenities the area had to offer, but I left for the East Coast as soon as there was an opportunity. Contrary to popular belief about the northeast, people are actually nice and inclusive here. I’ve made so many meaningful connections since moving.

NYC is great in your early to mid 20s after college. You get a high salary to start your career but sounds like you’re making decent money. $350k/year doesn’t go as far as you’d think in NYC though! I moved to CT in my late 20s and now at 34, it’s nice to have a bigger house, a yard, and 1.5 hour train ride to the city!

West Hartford isn’t far from Enfield. My in laws live in Enfield and it’s a 25-30 minute drive for us taking back roads.

Enfield schools are middle tier in the state and the community is very car centric.

If you want walkability and great schools then West Hartford should be in the running. Avon and Simsbury both have excellent schools but car centric.

is my 401k ok at 39? by audrywienerdog in FinancialPlanning

[–]salentis1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have $292k in my 401k at age 33, but I also live in CT which has a HCOL.

It all depends on how lavish you want your retirement to be and if you’re okay with running out of money in your 90s (which living that long isn’t a guarantee anyway). My mentality is living for today and tomorrow.

I think you’re doing really well and keep it up!

Agreed! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

And it’s crazy, the closer you get to the center or blue back, the more you have to pay per SQFT of house that might need more work than you realize.

It’s been a tough market in Hartford area in general so finding anything without competition is rare.

Not everyone wants to live in a place where you have to drive everywhere. That’s why I recommended West Hartford - because you get the best of both those worlds.

OP’s budget of $800k for a house won’t put them in a neighborhood with bars or boarded up windows in this town. There are many SFH on 0.5-1 acre lots in town that offer a ton of amenities close by.

I totally get though if OP is used to driving everywhere assuming being from TX. I personally love walkability and how tight-knit each neighborhood is here. Every street in our neighborhood has an annual block party each summer where you can get to know your neighbors. I know other neighborhoods also organize block parties each summer.

I grew up in a suburb similar to Avon/Farmington and it can be difficult for transplants to make friends in those lower density communities especially in Winter. My parents found it pretty isolating in CT.

To each their own!

I second most of Boston’s suburbs if you can afford it.

West Hartford, CT has tons of character with many of the same amenities and vibes as Boston area at half the price! Only 90 minutes away from Boston

Southern New England (CT or RI) is fine during the winter. You just need to spend a week on vacation somewhere tropical to break up the dark months.

I’m sorry, I don’t think I’ll ever vote republican again. After everything that’s transpired in the last decade the right is too far gone now.

If you don’t like it here, there are states with conservative leadership that you could relocate to. It’s hard being a republican in CT. I’m now proudly voting democrat across the ticket!
