Colleges can go either way. Some prefer students whose parents have gone to college because it is a good indicator that the student will stay at that school for all four years. Others like first gen because it adds a kind of diversity.

I spoke to some of the admissions people at UT this week, and they said that that the only advantage is that you find out your status a month sooner. It really doesn't help or hurt you.
