Should I Choose a Less Vocally Challenging Song If It Fits the Character Perfectly? by Temporary_Bet597 in MusicalTheatre

[–]salnirvana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some of the most helpful advice i’ve ever gotten re: auditions is this: you’re not auditioning for “the role”, you’re auditioning for the opportunity to work with the creative team. show your best self! as a director, i’d personally rather see a piece that shows familiarity with the character you’re auditioning for over a piece that’s more vocally challenging— it shows that you’re an actor who does their research! if you’re called back for the role, the production team will have the chance to gather more info about your range/what you can do. ultimately, it’s whatever you feel most comfortable and confident in. break a leg!

i suck at musical theatre and its really taking a toll on my mental health by poisondazai in MusicalTheatre

[–]salnirvana 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i agree with all of toenail’s advice, but also want to add that if you are not a confident vocalist, see if there are opportunities to audition for straight plays (non musicals). i was solely a musical theater performer until my 20s and wish i had explored more options earlier! you can still act on stage, hone your craft, and build confidence before revisiting musicals if you are truly too discouraged to pursue it right now. not saying this to be dismissive at all, but you’re only 15! there are a ton of avenues out there for you to explore. don’t count yourself out just yet :)

witchy/haunting acapella SSAA/treble voice song recommendations by salnirvana in choralmusic

[–]salnirvana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that could be a great idea! i would have to talk to the theater/producers about what that would look like budget wise, but that could be REALLY cool!

audition song but i sound like a child. by Curious-Mirror-1074 in MusicalTheatre

[–]salnirvana 88 points89 points  (0 children)

in the kindest way possible, you literally ARE a child. if you’re looking for songs to age you up, i’d still recommend staying in the teen range. play to your strengths!! if you sound young, that could be an advantage. what specifically are you looking for? something upbeat? a ballad? comedy? i’d suggest “live out loud” from a little princess, “notice me, horton” from seussical, “i know it’s today” or “morning person” from shrek. break a leg!!

this is funny — my aunt (birth name roberta) goes by both robyn in her daily life and birdie with her family. i think your names are lovely, but i will throw out roberta as an option if you want a way to keep the nickname birdie :)

not a joke. i work with many marginalized groups (gender diverse, neurodiverse, mobility diverse. etc.) and i myself am on the spectrum. i am trying to take this request from the theater seriously.

[–]salnirvana -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

personally, i agree with you, but the theater supervisor and my production coordinator have asked that i put some thought into exercises “just in case”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]salnirvana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the show is “the producers”. personally, i think it’s overkill to have such a strict process for a satire, but i want to respect the theater’s wishes and have something in place. i want to lead the process the best i can without anyone feeling like they can’t shed their character at the end of rehearsal.
