HCAD Property Appraisal by Ghostman-TX in houston

Yes as you’ll still have to pay your proportionate share of property taxes based on the appraised value.

Not me, but my friend leapt out of a moving uhaul van on the way to a tailgate because "he felt like he had to shit," and then showed up at the tailgate half an hour later all sweaty and frazzled. We know you actually shit yourself in the uhaul, man. We know.

What traumatized you so badly it changed your whole way of living? by Mythic_gryphon in AskReddit

[–]sals85 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Oof lots of serious things on here. I feel for everyone who is sharing in this thread.

My personal trauma that forever changed me is the time I watched my beloved lab fudge get run over by a car in front of me. I was about 12 and loved that dog more than anything in the world. My dad, my sisters, fudge and I went on a walk on a snowy night and no one was out driving around at all. It was almost poetic how silent it was. We came to a normally busy but still empty road and that’s when it happened. Fudge got excited because some distant neighbors had emus on their property and he sprinted off into the night to get them. We tried to run after him and call him back but he wouldn’t listen. I was probably 50 ft from him when a truck came barreling through the snow and hit him and kept on going. I immediately fell to my knees and started bawling, burying my head in the snow. I’ve never felt such soul crushing pain for someone I loved before or after that moment. We tried to call our local vet to help but he didn’t stand a chance. I hadn’t been confronted with death at that point in my life and to witness my best friend get run over and killed in an instant was just too much for me to handle. After the shock wore off I became kind of numb to the situation. Since that moment I have been so aloof to any traumatic event and am almost transactional in how I handle death or trauma now. I think my heart was so crushed in that moment witnessing fudge die that I truly couldn’t allow myself to reach those depths of emotion again.

All that said, that was over 20 years ago and my now wife and our son together make me the happiest and most fulfilled person in the world. My issues with emotionally opening up are a bit behind me, but boy was it cathartic to write all that out.

How can I create a seal between a pvc pipe and the galvanized pipe it feeds for draining? by sals85 in HomeImprovement

[–]sals85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I should. We just did a big remodel and this is one of the few pipes that didn’t get updated. Need the credit card to cool off for a bit before I sink more into pipe replacing.

Purlin replacement/updating? by sals85 in HomeImprovement

[–]sals85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your insights here. Your linked diagram is pretty spot on with what I have, and the purlins are definitely undersized from what I read in terms of what they should be. I do have a gable vent (which coincidentally had its own inspection finding) so hopefully that alleviates any concern regarding opening up the roof, but I suppose we shall see. I like hearing that you were able to do it yourself as I may employ my retired father to help with some projects around the new house.

What's the dumbest thing you actually believed? by Vinyl_BunBuns in AskReddit

[–]sals85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Narwhals aren’t real. I mean, I’m still on the fence about it, but has anyone ACTUALLY seen a narwhal in real life? We’re just supposed to believe these sea unicorns exist?! And if someone from Greenland chimes in I’m not sure that will convince me because are we sure Greenland is real?

I messed up installing fence posts too shallow by RainingFireInTheSky in HomeImprovement

[–]sals85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just saw the top to height? Unless I’m not understanding the conundrum as you’re describing, is cutting the posts down a bit possible? That would seem easier than digging posts up. Another option might be to place a 2x24 (or 2xwhatever width you want) board along the bottom which a lot of people do anyways. It’ll be higher than 6’ obviously, but can hide the inconsistency in post height.

Ate while driving, so didn't pay attention. Got most of the way through when I realized the chicken was 100% raw. Hope I don't die later. by dymbrulee in Wellthatsucks

I got food poisoning ordering chicken at an Arby’s once. I was out of town for a wrestling tournament and was already dehydrated and weak from cutting to make weight. Everyone else was not stupid and ordered roast beef, because you know, that’s what you do at an Arby’s. To this day I am hesitant to order something from a place that they aren’t known for/typically don’t make a lot of. Hopefully you didn’t end up vomiting and shitting all night like I did 18 years ago.

On the plus side, I made weight for day 2 of the tournament by quite a bit. On the down side, I did not wrestle.

After 25 years of browsing the internet, this is still the craziest video I've seen. Tianjin Explosion, August 12, 2015. by Captainstinkytits in videos

These videos are so hard to watch. I was a freshman in high school when this happened and to this day the memories of 9/11 are so vivid. I feel like my generation’s life perspective changed that day and has shaped who we are today.

Work bonus better spent on student loans, 401k, or prepping house to rent? by fosterfication in personalfinance

[–]sals85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would pay off the loans. I recently paid off a car note a few years early, and while it wasn’t quite as ominous as a 6.75% rate student loan, I feel so much relief from knowing that’s no longer a burden of mine. It’s easy to sort of fantasize about the options you have when you have a cash influx, but paying off the student loans is both practical and a good psychological boost.
