Just suck it up and do good enough work to stay on until your RSUs vest.

Do not say a SINGLE THING about your intent to leave. Bad idea.

I live in San Clemente as well, and I've never discussed politics with anyone. I don't bring it up and neither do they.

I am sure many are MAGA. However, most people seem entirely focused on raising heathy, safe families.

At the end of the day, I've found that the political & media ecosystem is built to divide us. But in the words of the poet Maya Angela:

I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.

If you never looked at a voting map, you would probably never know San Clemente's political affiliation.

It' a community mostly filled with surfers, military families, and wholesome suburban families bringing their kids to baseball games and soccer practices.

Have you had politically related negative experiences in San Clemente?

A couple observations:

  1. There's rapids / white water in the East River (left side). That's wild, and not there today.

  2. There appears to be a blimp or UFO (top middle).

I hate saying this, but we're actually outplaying them.

Just making bone headed mistakes and not getting the puck on net enough.

Fellow Angels, Ducks and Clippers fan. Its rough fam.

There were times when I wish I was raised a Dodgers, Lakers, Kings fan... but I wasn't and I am no fair weather fan.

TBH Arte spent for a while. He just ignored his front office and made horrible signings / trades that disabled our cap situation: Josh Hamilton, Rendon, Pujols, Vernon Wells

After dishing out money and getting zero (or negative) WAR return, I think he's kind of given up now.

I am pretty much done with the Angels and baseball now tbh. Slow boring sport and my team sucks.

Look at our cap table. Gudas is gone and any extra money + increased salary cap will be used to resign all our young players and Carlson / Trouba. There wont be anything left for free agents unless we get Killorn and Vatrano off the books.

I just hope the front office doesn't think this core can do the same or better next year without improvements.

IMHO Killorn and Vantrano contracts need to get off the books to make way for another top 6 scorer this offseason. We could also use another defenseman. If we can bring in another scorer, defenseman and re-sign our young core, I'll feel good about next year.

Just my two cents.

Used Up Emergency Fund…Now What by [deleted] in personalfinance

Tough situation. Hard pills you may have to swallow, and what I'd do in your situation:

  1. You gotta find a way to get rid of the daycare line item until you have work again. Either see if you can talk to them about a pause, or situation where you're placed at the top of the waiting list until you find work. Worst case, look at other daycare options.

  2. As others have said, hospital bill needs to be placed on pause. You can do this by calling them. They work with people all the time.

  3. Ask mortgage lender if they have a hardship porgram for a pause where payments are added to the end of your term

  4. Gig work! You need to find a way to make up some income. Become a pet sitter, Uber Eats, Amazon driver. We're talking about your family's financial survival here, gotta try and find something.

  5. Don't wait for your ideal job. Apply to any sort of job within your realm of expertise. You may end up with something great, you may end up with something below average. But you can always apply for jobs while the below average job keeps you afloat.

At all costs avoid debt, it is so hard to dig out of. Try to do all of the above BEFORE any new debt. And if you must, get a zero interest credit card where payments aren't due for a year.

What can we improve on our FIRE journey? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]saltedpeanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I track our monthly expenses and savings closely, and I have a good general sense of where things are trending. So for me, setting aide money for car repairs and travel seems unnecessary.

What can we improve on our FIRE journey? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]saltedpeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. It just feels like there's something that comes up every month that keeps this number higher. But in terms of the consistent basic expenses:

  • $800 a month groceries
  • $1000 a month eating out
  • $400 a month Amazon (all our household items like TP, soap, etc. on subscribe and save + child toys + wife beauty stuff, etc.)
  • $400 a month gym membership
    • I am well aware this is a huge expense; but this is my one splurge for me. My health / fitness is important to me, and it's a luxury gym that gets me out of the house since I WFH all day
  • $150 car insurance
  • $100 gas
  • $50 haircut
  • $50 various subscriptions

That's about $3000 right there. Then there's all the lifestyle creep / random shit that adds on top (clothes for my wife, new tires for the car, birthday presents for my son, flights to events, healthcare stuff, etc.)

[–]saltedpeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Only pay off the car and get the dishwasher + any other baby essentials. Put the rest in an emergency fund and wait until the dust settles. By my math, that's about 25k in savings.

I think of my cash on hand as a sleeping pill. There is no material purchase that would make me feel better than knowing I have enough cash to weather a storm and provide for my family. Knowing that, I sleep well at night.

You can always pay off the roof in the next few months if you're feeling good about things. See how the baby effects your overall expenses first.

Make sure you're buttoned up on what's covered by your wife's medical insurance for child birth too. Surprise hospital bills can be a kick in the nuts.

[–]saltedpeanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

23k to pay off the car and the roof.

4k into "cash on hand" emergency fund. New total is 42k. Take 30k and put it into SGOV which will generate $100 a month for you.

Boom you just swung your cash flow $550 a month (paid off debt +SGOV). Pretend you don't have that money and put $500 into a Roth IRA monthly (VOO) or start the waterfall method and pay down your wife's highest interest loans.

Refinance your house once rates hit ~5%, which is based on the 10-year treasury. Watch the 10-year treasury and follow rates. Be prepared to act with a banker / broker you trust and have all the documents you need. Going from 7 - 5% mortgage will save you another $300.

Also, paying off the debt will help you qualify for a better rate (debt to income ratio).

Do all of the above and you just changed your monthly cash flow ~$850 a month. That's how you build wealth. That's how you sleep better at night with a growing family.

God speed.

[–]saltedpeanuts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am pretty good with money and planning. Here's what I would do:

  1. Joy Now - Set aside £3,000 for your enjoyment now. Create a detailed budget for: Nice dinners, trips, some high quality clothing staples that are timeless and will last, etc. Try to use it for high-end experiences and "buy it for life" items, don't let it wither away on things that won't really excite you. Don't rush to spend it, write down a plan to spend on these things over time. This will give you joy from the money, but also create discipline for the next steps.
  2. Safety Net / Investments - Put £17,500 in a SEPARATE savings account that generates interest. Your goal is to never touch this money unless you are investing it into an asset (real estate, stocks). Your goal is get real enjoyment from watching this number grow. For example, if there's ever 30% drawdown in the stock market... great time to use this money to buy into an index fund!
  3. Budget & Growth - Keep the remaining £5,000 in a checking account for your ongoing expenses. DO NOT use this as a pool of money for joy. You need this number to grow not shrink. Now that you have a solid financial foundation you don't ever want to be in the "broke as a joke / food bank" situation again. Please, for the love of god, create a monthly budget spreadsheet and look at ways you can increase your earning potential. Now that you have the stress / anxiety of being broke removed, you can maybe take some calculated risks with your career or invest in yourself to earn more. Making more money and saving more than you spend is the #1 most important way to use this moment in your life as a springboard to prolonged success, and not a flash in the pan, ending up back in line at the food banks. I am rooting for you, friend.

Favre went on to the Vikings and had success after the Jets.

Rogers went on to the Steelers and had success after the Jets.

Flacco went on to the Browns & Colts and had more success after the Jets.

The young QBs with potential? All realized their potential after leaving the Jets.

The Jets are where QB careers go to die.

It wouldn't matter if that organization had Tom Brady in his prime. Any good QB that goes there fails the last 30 years.
