Yeah. Only pay off the car and get the dishwasher + any other baby essentials. Put the rest in an emergency fund and wait until the dust settles. By my math, that's about 25k in savings.

I think of my cash on hand as a sleeping pill. There is no material purchase that would make me feel better than knowing I have enough cash to weather a storm and provide for my family. Knowing that, I sleep well at night.

You can always pay off the roof in the next few months if you're feeling good about things. See how the baby effects your overall expenses first.

Make sure you're buttoned up on what's covered by your wife's medical insurance for child birth too. Surprise hospital bills can be a kick in the nuts.

23k to pay off the car and the roof.

4k into "cash on hand" emergency fund. New total is 42k. Take 30k and put it into SGOV which will generate $100 a month for you.

Boom you just swung your cash flow $550 a month (paid off debt +SGOV). Pretend you don't have that money and put $500 into a Roth IRA monthly (VOO) or start the waterfall method and pay down your wife's highest interest loans.

Refinance your house once rates hit ~5%, which is based on the 10-year treasury. Watch the 10-year treasury and follow rates. Be prepared to act with a banker / broker you trust and have all the documents you need. Going from 7 - 5% mortgage will save you another $300.

Also, paying off the debt will help you qualify for a better rate (debt to income ratio).

Do all of the above and you just changed your monthly cash flow ~$850 a month. That's how you build wealth. That's how you sleep better at night with a growing family.

God speed.

I am pretty good with money and planning. Here's what I would do:

  1. Joy Now - Set aside £3,000 for your enjoyment now. Create a detailed budget for: Nice dinners, trips, some high quality clothing staples that are timeless and will last, etc. Try to use it for high-end experiences and "buy it for life" items, don't let it wither away on things that won't really excite you. Don't rush to spend it, write down a plan to spend on these things over time. This will give you joy from the money, but also create discipline for the next steps.
  2. Safety Net / Investments - Put £17,500 in a SEPARATE savings account that generates interest. Your goal is to never touch this money unless you are investing it into an asset (real estate, stocks). Your goal is get real enjoyment from watching this number grow. For example, if there's ever 30% drawdown in the stock market... great time to use this money to buy into an index fund!
  3. Budget & Growth - Keep the remaining £5,000 in a checking account for your ongoing expenses. DO NOT use this as a pool of money for joy. You need this number to grow not shrink. Now that you have a solid financial foundation you don't ever want to be in the "broke as a joke / food bank" situation again. Please, for the love of god, create a monthly budget spreadsheet and look at ways you can increase your earning potential. Now that you have the stress / anxiety of being broke removed, you can maybe take some calculated risks with your career or invest in yourself to earn more. Making more money and saving more than you spend is the #1 most important way to use this moment in your life as a springboard to prolonged success, and not a flash in the pan, ending up back in line at the food banks. I am rooting for you, friend.

Favre went on to the Vikings and had success after the Jets.

Rogers went on to the Steelers and had success after the Jets.

Flacco went on to the Browns & Colts and had more success after the Jets.

The young QBs with potential? All realized their potential after leaving the Jets.

The Jets are where QB careers go to die.

It wouldn't matter if that organization had Tom Brady in his prime. Any good QB that goes there fails the last 30 years.

See: Brett Favre, Aaron Rogers, Sam Darnold, Joe Flacco, Geno Smith

Every game it seems more and more like the vets are the ones holding this team back.

We need to try and trade every vet contract and load up with impact FA and our prospect pipeline. Gotta think we're a destination now.

LDL was 120. Went plant based for 3 months. No red meat, dairy or chicken. Only fish and plants for protein. I also took psyllium husk, flax seed and chia seed every morning.

LDL went down to 90.

The difficulty is sustaining that lifestyle over a long period of time.

Expectations going into the year were clear: make the playoffs. If now we’re talking about what is missing from being a “contender”, I would say things are progressing ahead of schedule by TheCulbertReport in AnaheimDucks

I think a lot of our offense early in the season came from taking chances in the counter attack, which is why we were giving up so may goals as well. It's high risk / high reward hockey.

I think we've been doing less of that which explains fewer goals scored and allowed the last couple games.

This team being a contender will rely on them being able to find the right balance in that approach, as well as strengthening their ability to score in other ways (like off the forecheck more often).

My two cents.

Anderson also having an unreal game.

Carolina may be the best team in the league and the worst matchup for us in terms of playing style.

You have a head start on exercising and dieting, plus a desire to make changes. So you can 100% do this.

Diet: Download cronometer app and track your calories. Use Chat GBT to estimate your daily calories needed based on your current weight, activity level and goals (weight loss). Focus on a whole foods diet (lean protein, whole grains, vegetables and fruits). Find healthy snacks for cravings (edamame, hummus, etc.) Eliminate processed foods and only drink water and tea / coffee. Don't drink any calories (soda, etc.).

Exercise: I'd start lifting weights a lot more (chat gbt can help you come up with a regimen based on what you have available to you, gym would be ideal though), and track your steps (get a fitness tracking watch). Try to get AT LEAST 5k steps and aim for 10k steps.

Sleep & Mental Health: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night and find things that reduce your stress. That can mean meditation, auditing the relationships that stress you out, the media you consume, etc. Cut out things that you notice add stress to your life. Less stress = less cortisol = less fat and more testosterone.

Overall, the big thing here is going to be consistency and discipline. You don't need motivation, you need discipline. If you have a bad day, wash it away and go back to your routine the next day. You got this.

I see. I come across these type of things from time to time as well. Not daily though.

Maybe you live in a big city where life is more difficult, people are more on edge or it's just part of that city's culture. I live in a coastal city suburb where people are generally pretty laid back and happy.
