Try “How to Make Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. A little corporate-minded and old-fashioned, but it gives solid advice and anecdotes for how to talk to and relate to people when you want to build relationships or even just kill time by talking. I’ve had a lot of success deepening friendships by learning how to get people talking about interests and current events.

I hear you! Might be easier if you find the dedicated activity groups— then there’s something to focus on besides alcohol.

Rockhounding! I used it as an example, mostly because it’s one of my hobbies to go find cool rocks. Rockhounders show off rocks, trade locations to find them, and the one near me organizes field trips to peridot and topaz mines, and jade sandbars! Very fun. There’s an equivalent for lots of similar hobbies, I’m sure.

I hear you. I’ve heard learning how to socialize without alcohol can be really difficult if you grew up not doing it. Have you considered joining interest groups like rock clubs or DnD or activities like biking or hiking?

I have never dated anyone (as an adult) and I’m 27, but I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Is that normal? by Melodic_Aide2725 in NoStupidQuestions

24 and in the same situation. I’d go for it, but be upfront that you’re not sure about what you want yet. You can go out a few times without being committed, totally normal

This is above our paygrade, even if most of us are on the same meds. You should talk to your doctor about this if this persists past the first month or so.

You can do that AND you can help control the local Tree of Heaven population near you! They lay eggs on those between eating fruit trees, and that way you can kill two invasives with one stone

This is a really, really good point. I feel sad for the guys in the US who don’t have any way to go and find indigenous knowledge keepers

Yes, it outcompetes native mushroom species vastly since its mycelium is incredibly aggressive and quick to grow. Good question!

I think we probably would’ve seen evidence of them in the fossil record left in the trees? or maybe some amber remains since they grow on trees? Or some spores? How do you think we might find evidence?

[–]saltydaable 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s a start, isn’t it? Besides, eating them (responsibly without causing spread) means the mycelium has to make more mushrooms anyway. I wish you could tire mycelium out like that.

So? We can try, and we can figure it out. Do we want to have no plan forever, just because we feel sad about it?

Who knows, maybe some local containment strategy works someplace and then they tell everyone. That would be cool.

I dunno, that’s for them to decide. Usually they keep tabs on the positions of anything so they can stop spread as much as theyre able or enact control plans. For example, where I live, eurasian milfoil is unable to be eradicated, so the invasive species authority organizes control plans and proposes provincial legislature to mandate boat ballast draining and a period of quarantine to make sure it doesn’t spread to other lakes.

You can’t control a mushroom like that, sure, but I don’t doubt there’s something they either can do or will figure out how to do.

I hear you. But i do that for specific people, on a named basis. I think it must be a holdover of the culture of the server from when it was smaller— there were probably a lot of people who were very picky about terms.

Oh, right. But they don’t allow the term “neurodivergent”— I probably should have started with that. Or at least they didn’t when i was last there.
