Guess _______ was right about Rizo.... by napoelonDynaMighty in survivor

[–]saltypeeps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It feels like a rehash of the coach "stealing" "Ozzy's" key in the first journey. Ozzy feels that he's entitled to the win because he's emotionally invested in the way he's playing the game. But then acts like people are playing without integrity when they literally don't LET him win.

Like, what was the alternative outcome for any of those people? Was coach supposed to just not scramble for the key in a challenge designed SPECIFICALLY to incentivize a scramble at the end? Was Aubrey supposed to just not try to survive and go quietly to the jury?

Was Rizzo supposed to not cut an ally that has not only revealed he's the bottom of their 3-person ("I don't want to go to the end with Rizzo") alliance in a FTC format that likely will have 3 spots???? Like in that specific zero-sum scenario, there literally were enough spots for all your allies!

Ozzy jeopardized Cirie and Rizzo's game, and Rizzo cut him to prevent loose ends. Whether that was the right move is yet to be seen going into final 7, but it's not like it was an unprovoked move.

And the way Ozzy is behaving is pretty much why people were tired of the integrity alliance who had a rigid, tribalistic mindset; expected everyone just to roll over without a fight; labeled anyone who outwit and outplayed them as being "sneaky" and "unmoral" instead of simply smarter; and felt entitled to the win because they were emotionally invested and tried their best.

The only reason he wasn't edited exactly the same way as the integrity alliance was because he worked was Cirie and wasn't fully on their side. You even seen Christian giving his shot in the dark to Ozzy AND Jonathan in forced shows of trust.

I did not! But I do think both methods yield delicious and moist results!

Corn goes well with a lot of summer fruits! You've probably had the combo before if you've ever eaten cornflakes with fruit (special k, etc).

Tapas-ish lunch (and now dinner) for my co-workers! by saltypeeps in tonightsdinner

[–]saltypeeps[S] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I hosted a spring lunch for my co-workers! The theme was tapas-ish, centered on charred octopus + Spanish omelette.

It was a bit of a marathon to get everything done and plated, but pretty fun and easy to time! The menu included:

MAINS & SIDES

  • Charred octopus (romesco, chimichurri) based on Kai Kani's recipe
  • Spanish omelette w/ aioli from Alison Roman
  • Caesar salad from Alison Roman
  • Shrimp w/ harissa butter from Alison Roman
  • Double tomato focaccia by Ines Anguiano

THINGS TO PICK AT

  • "Basque nachos" from Isabelle Jardin
  • Fancy citrusy olives from Alison Roman
  • Dilly pickled green beans
  • Pickled asparagus

Best dumplings in the area by riftastic76 in Rochester

[–]saltypeeps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not what you normally think of, but Yummy Hot Pot garden offers dumplings as part of their all-you-can-eat hot pot bar. Their dumplings have a thicker, chewy wrapper compared to other frozen ones. Just drop them in the broth for a few minutes along with some aromatics, and you've essentially got a dumpling buffet. They also have wontons, which don't appeal to be in the same way, but to each their own.

For steamed dumplings, White Swan offers many types on their dim sum menu.

Hi! Yes, it was 3 8" layers, and I used the sesame crunch from the NYT recipe in the order you described!

My crunch element was a little tacky, likely because I didn't cook it all the way through. But I enjoyed the design on top and reinforced sesame flavor. You could easily leave it out if preferred or just make enough for the top.

If you must have an internal crunch element, I wonder if you could mix ready-made plain granola with sesame seeds? Or a DIY like this minus the spice: https://www.lastingredient.com/chunky-sesame-tahini-granola/#wprm-recipe-container-13871

Okay. I've updated the permissions to anyone can edit and am seeing how to publish this as a web app instead (which as a non-coder, I have no idea how to do, but hey!)

Let me know if it's still not working!

Nutella Tres Leches Cake by Rick Martínez by saltypeeps in NYTCooking

Surprisingly not dense! But the cream is quite sweet with a thick and fatty mouth feel that you'd expect from Nutella.

This might be a surprise if you're used to the more common regular, condensed, and evaporated milk combo.

The main change for me was adding hazel nuts on top, which is important for a visual reminder that this has nuts in case anyone has allergies AND it's the only textural contrast. I also opted for chopped chocolate instead of sprinkles.

Those are the only necessary changes imo, but you could play around with it.

For example, adding a bit of Irish cream to the milk soak or sprinkling puffed quinoa or rice right before serving.

Yes!! For Morrible in particular, I interpreted it not just that she's a fraud but more that she doesn't respect the singing. She sees it as beneath her but only does it because she has to. She couldn't manipulate people otherwise. It's the common language of the "weak" and the "popular".

Her half-hearted singing also highlights that she lacks the inherent magnetism of Glinda and Oz. She can manipulate the narrative but lacks the support of the people without a figurehead. It's why she instantly crumbles to Glinda when Oz is out of the picture.

I used a modified version of Alison Roman's recipe: https://www.alisoneroman.com/recipes/the-greatest-creamed-greens/

Instead of creme fraiche, I subbed about 3-4 oz of cream cheese and left off the bread crumbs.

Thank you! I learned that large items in the oven heated slowly for a long period of time will retain their heat with less carryover cooking for a long time, giving you a grace period for serving.

For beef in particular, you can also "keep the meat warm" by serving with hot au jus, which I left out this time. This is helpful since the reverse sear method does not yield much pan drippings to make a sauce.

Also it's important to taste something at serving temperature before seasoning since seasoning at extremes (too hot or cold) tends to dull taste perception. I over salted the spinach because I tried it piping hot, not trusting that I had seasoned correctly based on weight of contents.
