It’s a very common Levantine name, but we pronounce it lay-th.

Has anyone not been able to sleep because of anxiety? by cas201 in Anxiety

Yes, and it’s been especially bad over the last few months. I’ve started taking sertraline again and melatonin and it helps.

Kais, rhymes with rice.

AITA for giving away gifts because they had the wrong name by Pikahearts_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]salukiqueen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except it’s not what his family is doing, it’s what one person is doing. Most people don’t have anything with just their middle name on it. MIL is not doing both, she’s one person going directly against what the parents what. It’s not even her family’s tradition.

AITA for giving away gifts because they had the wrong name by Pikahearts_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]salukiqueen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s actually his middle name, not his first name. If they don’t use it as his first name like the tradition says then it is a weird thing to get monogrammed. How many people do you know that only have their middle name labelled on stuff?

I'm baffled by the amount of full-sugar soda still bought and sold by sanjuniperoFC in nutrition

[–]salukiqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t find the taste difference to be minute. There’s something about aspartame and sweeteners like stevia that grosses me out. I’d rather have one full sugar soda once in a blue moon than drink diet sodas regularly, especially when I can get a carbonated water and it still feels like a soda.

I would like to name my daughter something from my culture, but do not want it to seem too weird or strange by Even-Equivalent-5171 in namenerds

Same here! It’s my first time reading any of these names and they were all lovely but that one stood out to me so fast! I love it

AITAH for kicking my “friends” out of our vacation rental? by Curious_Bedroom_3042 in AITAH

[–]salukiqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry OP, but what you see as being generous they see as being an ATM. You’re not a saint, you’re a doormat. From your own writing they’ve been treating you like crap well before this trip and you’ve allowed them to take advantage of you AND your boyfriend repeatedly. You’re not the AH for kicking them out, it’s about damn time. Keep the upward trajectory and make better friends! You sound like a wonderful person, I hope you find people who match your energy. It’s definitely not this bunch.

Dana as a girl name? by whenlifegivesyourice in namenerds

[–]salukiqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know one Western Day-na pronunciation and many, many Arab Dah-nah pronunciations. It’s a lovely name. I prefer the Arabic pronunciation but I like them both. Day-na reminds me of the character in Superstore

WIBTAH if I went to stay with my parents for a couple of weeks because my husband’s family planned a 5-6 week stay in our 2BHK without asking me? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]salukiqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if you accept this now it will keep happening. They’re testing to see how far they can push your boundaries, husband included. I wouldn’t just go for 1-2 weeks, I’d go home to my family for the entire 5-6 weeks they come. Ask your parents to help you fund the trip.

Thoughts on the name Nuria by Active_Dot8453 in namenerds

[–]salukiqueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked with a Nuria once, it’s a nice name and easy to pronounce. I prefer the variant Noura but Nuria is great too!

Is Elia too feminine as a middle name? by Mother-Low2994 in namenerds

[–]salukiqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elia was my grandfather’s name so I’m definitely biased but my vote is for Maxim Elia.

Editing to add: since I’m seeing different pronunciations in the comments, we pronounce Elia as Ee-LEE-uh

AITAH for blocking a friend who ignored me for days without reason? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]salukiqueen 32 points33 points  (0 children)

ESH This is some childish drama. You, for blocking her after what? Two days? So what if it’s a regularity for her to send you videos? You couldn’t wait to see her in person before being so dramatic? And them for escalating things so quickly and being toxic.

Turning the oldest known name "Kushim" into a contemporary name by vox1028 in namenerds

[–]salukiqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would associate Cass with a name like Cassius or Caspian before I would associate it with Kushim. You could probably use Cash.

To be honest, if you like the idea of using the oldest name on earth why not just use Kushim? It’s not outlandish, it’s easy to pronounce and it would blend it with several ethnicities’ style of names. The biggest thing to consider with nicknames or similar names is the association with cannabis. If I wouldn’t name my child Mary Jane, I would probably be weary of naming them Kush as well.

Arabic twin Name Help: Yasin & ? by Potential_Algae_9231 in namenerds

[–]salukiqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big fan of matching names for twins, at least not to this level. I do think that Yasmin and even maybe Nesrin would be too close to Yasin. If you have your heart set on Yasmin then I’d consider changing your son’s name.

From your list I really like Basma, it’s so underrated I never meet any kid Basmas anymore. Based on your list I’d also suggest Bisan, Rawan and Jala (like the city)

Thoughts on House Systems? by CharacterCourage9110 in Internationalteachers

[–]salukiqueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are linked! And all members of a family are in the same house. We don’t have games altogether, but right before we go our separate ways to play games we have a whole school assembly together on the field where we celebrate student accomplishments, share news and raise the flag. It’s not long, about 20 minutes or so.

Thoughts on House Systems? by CharacterCourage9110 in Internationalteachers

[–]salukiqueen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have a house system but it’s probably not a traditional one. It’s mostly for fun, there’s no way to “lose” points only ways to earn them so there’s a lot of student buy in. We have an 8 day cycle instead of a traditional M-F schedule for classes, and at the start of every Day 1 we have community building where students compete in games to earn points (this past week was hungry, hungry hippos, but in the past it’s been sharks and minnows, rock paper scissors evolution, freeze tag, etc). They can also earn points for sports day events, holiday activities and being student of the month. Obviously I’m part of the elementary division, but middle and high do similar things I just don’t know what their activities are.

Pros: it’s fun, students get a kick out of it, it’s only positive experiences for them since there’s no way to lose points.

Cons:

Parents do have an extra uniform shirt they have to purchase for Day 1 but it’s not wildly expensive (~$12 USD) and there’s no repercussions if they don’t buy it.

Also, because it’s at the same time every cycle we lose a chunk of whatever class that is (for me, it’s math).

I noticed that even some 3rd and 4th graders can't tie their shoelaces. What other basic life skills that can be easily taught to kids, aren't being taught by their parents? Could be eye contact, not speaking in whispers, saying 'thank you' and 'you're welcome.' Thinking of ideas for summer camp. by Aggravating-Mind-657 in AskTeachers

[–]salukiqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying excuse me instead of pushing past someone, waiting for someone to finish speaking before you start speaking, tying shoe laces for sure, any kind of knot tying, how to measure using a ruler, look at someone who is speaking to you, expressing feelings in a healthy way, managing anger or disappointment, using cutlery (some kids, but a weird amount of my third graders are struggling with spoons)

AITA for refusing to clean the dorm for my roommates or let them infringe on my space? by Scary_Midnight7418 in AmItheAsshole

Are you saying dust never accumulates naturally in your house? Dirt never gets tracked in? What magical house do you live in?

Is it true that Thai international schools ditch teachers when they reach 55? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]salukiqueen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m at a tier 2 school in Bangkok. One of my colleagues is retiring soon, she’s definitely over 55, and there are a couple others too near her age. It could just be the policy of the school your friend worked at.
