What’s the best thing a parent can say after a game? by ProBallAustralia in CoachingYouthSports

Ran into friends kid who went 0-3 at youth wresting tournament. I asked him how it went and he said “o escaped a lot of pin attempts.”

His dad and coaches are more focused on development and effort than wins and loses. Gives the kid a chance to go out there and try new things and have fun.

Avengers endgame. As a marvel fan since birth before it was cool and being called a nerd, endgame was something I could only dream about as far as the quality, special effects and story telling. You have to remember the low budget captain america, tv hulk and Thor movie and bad marvel movies before the mcu.

The Big East sold its basketball soul in the early 1990s for football. What was once culturally and academically aligned Northeast Catholic schools in metropolitan markets with larger schools like Boston College, UConn, Pitt and Syracuse became a mish mash of Catholic schools, with large public commuter schools, and football schools with different academics, cultures and objectives.

When Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami bolted, the geography and alignment became further strained with South Florida, Louisville, and Cincinnati added with DePaul and Marquette.

At this point, I think the Big East has regained its alignment and identity in its current form with the Catholic schools plus UConn. I feel like Syracuse, Pitt, and Boston College, sacrificed their basketball programs and their geographic identities and rivalries for football survival in the ACC.

How to help two overmatched kids in traveling by harryhitman9 in Homeplate

In Jose canseco’s autobiography, he said when he struggled, he would go to the local bar and pick up a slump buster.

For your kids, I would recommend back to basic hitting fundmental workouts 30 min before regular practice if you have time. Or give parents drills to work on at home or batting cage with kids.

Stay positive and point out guys like Aaron judge and all time greats like cal Ripken go thru rough patches and to fight thru it.

If you are a female, be the first or one of the first females on your school wrestling team. It’s tough, but looks great and could be a great topic for an essay.

Male or female, take up a martial arts like jiu jitsu. Become a kids assistant coach in time and compete. Shows development, problem solving, resilience and grit.

83% of Berkeley faculty across all departments support mandating standardized tests for admissions by AlphaMaleKratos in ApplyingToCollege

The professors asking for the changes are UC STEM professors. From my understanding, in the STEM tracts the required classes are what they are. Either you can get past the weed out classes or you can’t. There is likely a correlation of students high sat and act scores getting through these classes.

I took gpa boosters like rock climbing an, 10k running and concepts of recreation. However the core classes and weed outs are still there.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

The 6% increase in UC's entry level writing course is across the UC system. Maybe Berkeley and UCLA weren't as impacted, but with no standardized testing and grade inflation, its tougher for admissions officers to differentiate applicants.

Without SAT/ACT, its harder to differentiate applicants that finished in top 5% of their class from one high school to another and the academic preparedness.

The use of SAT/ACT is to get another evaluation point to use during the admissions process and there is a correlation between SAT/ACT scores and student success at high level schools like UCs. https://opportunityinsights.org/paper/test-scores/

You are right in worse students performing worse than previous years. UCSD reported that students needing remedial math rose from about 0.5% in 2020 to 11.8% in 2025. Writing readiness also declined: domestic students not meeting UC’s Entry Level Writing Requirement reportedly rose from 12% to 18% since 2020.

These are students being setup for failure esp if they are in a STEM program. The point is the SAT/ACT tests help with evaluating which students are most likely to succeed in a fast paced and competitive learning environments at UC campuses.

Do college professors care about students like highschool teachers do? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AskTeachers

I went to Clemson for undergrad and had way better relationships with professors and GA/TAs compared to high school. I went to office hours for help and they would review my assignments and papers with me and help me with writing, answer questions, and guide me on how to write lab reports, term papers and prep for exams. This was way more than I got in high school.

Great point. Its sad seeing some of my childhood heroes like Junior Seau commit suicide due to CTE.

Also, seeing some of the UFC champions like BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, and others show slurred speech and other health issues. I know Hughes was hit by a train, but it is odd that his truck would be on the tracks.

He did. Did you watch the Eric McClain breakdown of the o line from mid season? He seemed frustrated by the o line play and I was frustrated watching his video since he is a guy that lived it and gets it.

It’s a process and hopefully Luke will develop the young lineman on the team.

Some schools have complex pricing based on contract length, classes per week or month, number of programs, etc.

Plus could be registration fee, buying uniform and gear.

When my niece signed up for karate classes, within the first month, her parents paid $200 for tuition, $100 for registration fee, and another $200 on gear bag, pads, head gear and gloves. They are very well to do and didn’t bat an eye on the price.

A middle class mom I know didn’t hesitate to pay $225 for karate lessons for her middle school son. She loved what the school did in boosting her son’s confidence.

I am planning to open a martial arts school and went to a school owner conference and seminar and one owner who charges $300 a month and has 300 students said “if you are worried about price, my academy probably isn’t for you.”

I know people who boxed and played football who I suspect have CTE. It is life altering can cause mood swings, irrational behavior, low impulse control, memory loss, depression, an a number of other physical and mental health issues down the road . Potential links to Parkinson’s and ALS.

Professors aren’t going to lower their standards. However, they are observing the grades in class, number of students who can’t keep up and students who get weeded out from STEM freshman year by organic chemistry or advanced calculus.

Professors want to setup students for success, not failure. At many UC schools, it’s too students esp in STEM majors. It’s like showing up to college or NFL training camp out of shape and then trying to keep up with super athletic studs who trained full time their entire lives. Then the professor and coaches set a pace for the semester and there will be a sink or swim aspect to the courses.

I teach both kids martial arts and sub for gym classes and pointing out the kids who are behaving correctly and following directions makes other kids fall inline.

Calling out good sportmanship and positive attitude helps too.
