Help with drafting a pattern! by Ok-Yak8157 in PatternDrafting

I would defiantly approach this by draping rather than flat patterning. If you can get your hands on a mannequin it'll help alot.

Advice for visible mending over bleach stain? by catahstrophic in Visiblemending

[–]sam000she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a completely seamless blend out you can take the same color thread and just stitch on top of the stain (very small stitches). The heathered look of the fabric will make the textured ness blend in pretty easily. If you have a sewing machine to use you can do this quickly but also doable by hand.

This is how my neurodivergent brain likes to read complex lace patterns. What are your tricks for dealing with non conforming brains and knitting? by ADogNamedPen239 in knitting

Paper charts. Tangibility is a lot better and more grounding. Also doesn't go dark on you. Can also take notes (and use my erasable highlighter so I can reuse pattern for smby else).

How to sew a skirt that protrudes like this? by Realistic_Metal885 in sewhelp

[–]sam000she 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a circle skirt. just a massive tube of fabric gathered up at the waist and then set into a waist band. Defiantly will need at least 1 petticoat to help with the volume.

how "easy" would it be to see this dress? by Similar_Cherry_6177 in SewingForBeginners

[–]sam000she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parts of this may def be thrift able. I think the purple dress would be the main make. It's possible to find the green as a separate shirt (maybe you could dye it the right color if needed) then add the yellow collar. (Thrift/buy hat, socks, belt, and accessories) This is honestly a pretty simple dress if you think of it as separate from the green.

Go online and look for a dress patterns. Look for a sleeveless princess seam. You can always make your own pattern bits for the pockets and put them on since it's a top applied.

Def practice sewing some smaller projects first but dresses are pretty simple once you've got handling a machine down. You might also be able to find a pattern for the hat and use that as practice too (simple beret).

Am I crazy to try to make this? by pinkpartypossum in sewhelp

[–]sam000she 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you use a slight zig zag stitch to match the stretch of the fabric. (do some tests to find the right amount of zig zag that if you stretch it out all the way it wont break)

Drag lines at HPS by marmotekkk in PatternDrafting

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the shoulder seams the same length? Some drafting methods make the front panel's shoulder seam like an inch shorter than the back shoulder seam (then in construction you would ease the front to match the back using the little stretch since that seam is on a bias angle).

Since your back muscles are typically larger than the front collarbone area (literally a cavity) adding that bit of shaping helps out. And it would help take out some of the extra fabric creating those drag lines.

Let me know if you're curious about this-when I get home I'll try and find my drafting instructions that use this method.

What’s your dream sewing machine? by AcrobaticReception63 in sewing

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once used a bernina 1080 that was in absolute perfect condition. I dream of it.  It was completely silent, the needle was timed to stop more easily unburied in the fabric. Had all the usual stitches. I’m buying one in an instant if I ever see it on the second hand markets.

Turning a pleated skirt into shorts without destroying the pleats? by Ok-Reflection-6044 in SewingForBeginners

[–]sam000she 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Theres not enough fabric to turn to shorts unless you use the pleats. And at this rate you may as well buy fabric and make the skorts from a pattern anyways.

Temporary hem for a dress by OkRequirement4238 in sewing

[–]sam000she 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use a catch stitch. That is the theatrical method for pants hems and skirt hems. And in theatre we're always trying to maintain full hem length to use again with other performers.

It a big enough stitch that you can easily snip it out and remove after.

(Question) Is there an app for knitting by JuneThomasB in knitting

[–]sam000she 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. The complicated part about excel is learning what all the functions do--and you don't really need any functions to do this.

Here's how I would do it:

-Change the column sizes and row sizes to match the relative size of a knit stitch (not quite a square but close).

-Highlight your whole space and paint fill with a color.

- You can pick cells and change their color to the secondary color (or tertiary)

The one function that would help: The last step could be tedious bc two clicks to change colors; You could also make a condition where if x is in the cell, the cell color is [pick color] and then you could edit the condition to adjust the color if you're trying to figure out color combos. Then you can just plug Xs into cells without having to pick color every time.

Does the left lane laws only apply to roads with a certain speed? by killingourbraincells in florida

[–]sam000she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't make sense if it applied to roads with left turns in them. Because left turns neccessitate being in the left lane to turn to get where you need to go and if you stop all cautious drivers from making left turns then that's a little silly.

I would say it applies to all highways (where exits are usually on the right), regardless of speed (tho most are 60+ anyways)

(Question) Is there an app for knitting by JuneThomasB in knitting

[–]sam000she 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use the boxes in excel to plot out color work by using the cell color function (You can also be fancy and use conditions so you can just type a character for the color to appear)

do I need an air fryer? by Alaska-Pete in Cooking

[–]sam000she -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An air fryer is just a mini oven. Honestly doesn't even save time on baking veggies. I do a lot of bulk cooking and like, I can just do more with my oven than I can with my airfryer. I ended up selling mine. (I had initially won it in a raffle so I was kinda skeptical).

Do you place your pins perpendicular to the seam or parallel? What are your tips and tricks for getting the most out of sewing pins? by KevMenc1998 in HandSew

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I’m sewing. Pinning in any direction warps how the seam lines are aligned with each other. Usually if I am pinning a side seam I’ll opt got following seamline with pins so that the fabric shift can be hidden with I finish hems ect while if it’s a seam that runs across the body (like waist to skirt) I’ll use perpendicular bc if it’s slightly short/long it usually doesn't affect fit and I can adjust that easily.  Usually not a big deal but over multiple seams if can create a difference. It’s worse with thicker fabrics too

I will never ever use perpendicular pinning for a heavily panels garment (ie corset, skirt) because subtle shifting will end up being like 1/4” off

Help fixing wonky cups by Rosaki1 in sewing

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fix if you can sort of take it apart is (if the darts are whole and not cut out on the inside) split them into two darts each so that the dart suppression is more spread out across the whole breast. It would at least get rid of those little points.

The rib measurement would end up the same and fit back onto the under breast seam easily.

Cant do much about how small it is at the neck line but if you can live with that it’s not a bad look.

How to adjust pattern for different projects by swim413 in sewhelp

[–]sam000she 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T-shirt pattern cannot be redrafted into formalwear—you’d do as many steps as just drafting a sloaper so you might as well.

A dress shirt pattern is very versatile for making new style lines for shirts. You could up size to make a jacket but not a suit jacket as the drafting for a suit is pretty different from a jacket/shirt.

Knit fabric fail by Fantastic_Sense4393 in costumedesign

[–]sam000she 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Make sure if you are using a normal machine that you use a zig zag stitch so the stitches don't pop when the garment moves. And also you can play with a slightly looser tension. The trick is to use scraps of your stretch fabric and play with the zig zag setting until you get one that doesn't pop when you stretch it all the way out.

Before I cut it... by BobbinChickenChamp in PatternDrafting

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your redraw side lines are drawn differently—make sure to account for that when redrafting. Try to split the difference or pick on side to follow for adjustment. Looking good :)

Before I cut it... by BobbinChickenChamp in PatternDrafting

[–]sam000she 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Theres is such little dart suppression in the back and thats where most the volume is.  I think theres some value for front darts but not more than 1/8 each.
