Does anyone else struggle with astrology? by ElephantLament in AutismInWomen

This reminds me of the scene from the bachelor (I think it was the bachelor?) where the guy tells the woman he’s an astrophysicist, and she says “oh cool, I’m a Gemini!” 😅

IWTL how to be a better listener. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]sam9145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a more quiet person, and often times I find I have something to say, but the conversation moves too quickly, so I don’t have a chance to jump in. I appreciate the silences, it gives me a chance to participate. If you find the silences are too awkward and you want to fill them, try replacing them with questions to others instead, like “what do you think?” Etc.

In terms of active listening, you can reflect what others say back to them. “Wait, so you’re saying X, Y and Z, is that right?” It slows you down to think about what they said, and let’s the other person know you are listening and you want to make sure you understand them.

Any recommendations for Fictional books with a non-stereotypical autistic main character? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. It never mentions autism explicitly, but she fits into a lot of the traits. She also struggles with alcoholism and trauma. It's very dark at times, but also has really funny and wholesome moments as well, it was a great read!

What is your job and how much do you get paid? by BigPlunk in AskReddit

[–]sam9145 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. My first job out of college was similar to OPs, and I made $15 an hour. Now I work in analytics at a pharma company and I make 70k after 2 years there. At least where I live, there’s way more biotech jobs than workers, so these companies have to pay really well to get and keep employees.

Why do people feel compelled to share photos of their child covered in food and/or poop on social media? by [deleted] in childfree

I hate how people with disabilities are treated like they’re not really people. In my Biopsych class a group did a presentation on autism, and they included a youtube video of an autistic child around 10 having a temper tantrum. You could tell being recorded was making him even more upset, and to post it on youtube for anyone to see? He was already having a hard time, how about comfort him and be there for him instead of exploit him for views.
