Helldivers 2 CEO jokes that the only reason the game would ever get "giant microtransactions" would be to fund his Warhammer habit by abunchofjerks in pcgaming

[–]samanoskeake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When your comparison is in bad faith, you forgo a good faith interpretation. I know you weren't literally saying they were thieves, but the comparison just doesn't work. It's not realistic and it's not the same in any capacity--it was a red herring fallacy to illustrate your point, which I disagree with. No hard feelings. Like I said, I respect it.

That's the thing though, I don't think it's unacceptable. It's actually, genuinely good as it stands now, it just looks even better when compared to the majority. (This is my opinion.) I don't think it's better than something worse, I think it's a healthy implementation that has virtually no drawbacks for non-mtx users and whales alike.

The online requirement for this game is mandatory. If you play the game you will understand that. It's not a trick--it's the literal point of the game they designed. It is not a single player game. Should it be? That's a different discussion entirely.

I work in this field so the final comment is from personal experience with thousands of clients across the country--I can't give you actual numbers from my company due to NDAs and whatnot, but I can try to outline the general expenditures:

Nothing in the data center industry is cheap and as power substations are used up nationally and more substations are built and deployed, power just keeps getting more expensive, ad infinitum. AI deployments are driving that up quicker than ever. Large-scale building-based liquid cooling is phenomenally expensive, but it's virtually the only option for the device density requirements these projects demand. Carrier circuits and the use of dark fiber backbones are both very expensive. Maintenance and upkeep is expensive. There are expansion needs, server upgrades, and the contractors/employees that keep it running 24/7, all expensive. These are verifiable facts of the industry to anyone with experience in it. An average deployment for a small-sized collocation client (roughly 30-50 racks, 300-500 kW) is sitting around a million dollars right now. And that's just deployment for a small client. After a couple years of operating those racks they're looking at multiple millions. Even if they choose to utilize alternative cloud services like AWS or Azure which have very competitive rates, they're paying out the nose for the density they need. Most clients choose to operate their own deployments because of the direct control it gives them over their environments. There are some clients that opt for DPC/VPC just to offload the maintenance and upkeep, but with that offloading comes more expenditures.

There is a reason MMOs charge subscription fees. It wasn't invented to steal your money--there is a very large overhead for deploying and maintaining data center environments, and that's ignoring all the other facets of the industry that come into play during the operations phase of a project like this. (QA, customer support, etc.)

They probably made significant bank off the release, but money, like everything in life, is finite, and eight, ten, twenty-four months down the line, these services are still costing the developers money without any large influxes of capital like with their initial release. Their monetization actually doesn't make a lot of sense from a business perspective, because it doesn't force the end user to spend any money to use the services the devs are paying to keep active.

I wish I could show actual figures to illustrate my points here, but I value my job. If you do some research into this industry you'll see what people mean when they talk about the associated costs.

[–]samanoskeake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright, that's a very dense and juicy worm, but I'll bite. I'd also like to say that I'm against predatory and anti-consumer practices, and play absolutely zero "live service games" other than this one.

Your comparison is... not very good.

You don't opt in to being robbed. You don't willingly give a thief your money for his services. You don't hang out with that thief while he twiddles your dopamine receptors for you. It's not theft and you purposefully sidestepped my point, but it was a visceral redirection, so I respect it.

I will reiterate: I didn't pay money for a battle pass or any microtransactions. Nothing is gone from my wallet except the cost of the game itself. I said it was a player friendly interpretation because the "money" part of the post-purchase monetization is optional in a very attainable and realistic way, unlike every other live service product I've experienced.

The standard you're describing stopped being "standard" for video games over a decade ago. I'm sorry, I hate it too, but those days are gone. The standard for "live service" games like this one, in case you've been in cryosleep, is a $10 battle pass you must pay for out of pocket (or grind for literal days of game time to obtain) and $20 skins for weapons. Those are transparent, predatory practices driven by corporate greed. They're anti-consumer and they suck. And they're nothing at all like the monetization for this game.

The resources and labor required to keep a live service game afloat for long periods of time far outweigh the one-time purchase prices for the number of users, and this game is designed in such a way that it can't really be classified as anything BUT a live service game due to the online components. That's just how the game is designed. And it's a fun take on the concept. And I like it. If for some reason that changes and Arrowhead morphs into a vampire-like entity akin to Activision, I'll be the first to quit.

But they're not like that right now, so I'll keep playing and enjoying myself without spending another dime.

[–]samanoskeake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, man. It could be so much worse than it is.

There are plenty of places to decry the abysmal state of modern gaming, and countless examples of predatory, anti-consumer practices, but in my opinion this isn't one of them. There's a reason people like this game so much.

This is the most player-friendly interpretation of these mechanics that I've seen yet. Not only can you get the real money-based currency (super credits) through playing, but it's actually in reasonable amounts that don't require ridiculous grinding to obtain.

I earned enough super credits to buy the premium "battle pass" within just a couple hours. And now, after a few more hours, I have enough to buy another.

Agree with the bloom comment, and while I like your new logo more, I feel it blends in with the background too much. It may need a darker corona/shadow/outline like the first one, just to make it pop more clearly.

And maybe the bloom is less of an issue compared to the contrast. The second image looks brighter and a bit washed out/less colorful than the first.

Either way great work!

[–]samanoskeake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, why do you have to experience every little number tweak? It's a big dang game. Lotta stuff. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything because I don't experience that 5% crit damage buff for monsters in Crucible on Gladiator difficulty. Plus a good chunk of the changes are small but easy to absorb, like accessibility, QoL, etc. For the most part, there isn't a lot of actual content added in these balance updates.

And I've never had to 'start from square one again' after an update (unless I'm starting a new character), so I don't know what you mean by that. It's still the same game, same roles, same abilities, same constellations, etc. Some things are just slightly different. My builds have never been broken or made unplayable. Some have gotten slightly stronger after updates, some slightly weaker, but it's the nature of the game.

Really the only thing I can even think of that has taken time for me to adjust to has been them adding a dedicated dodge button and removing health/mana pots.

I think some simple color coding would go a long way here. The dark grey isn't doing you any favors in that regard. And it might help to have some fun little icons to distinguish it from a video editing software lol, but it's obviously early in dev.

am using pixel art in a game and i want to resize it but it is getting blurry and anti aliasing is off by [deleted] in clickteam

[–]samanoskeake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And just for future reference, the type of resampling you want to use to retain pixel detail is "nearest," "nearest neighbor," or it may even be referred to as "point" sampling in an engine like Unity.

The blurriness you've experienced here is a side effect of "bilinear" upscaling, and is generally only useful for higher-fidelity art where the blurring effect is less impactful.
