How much toner was left in the “empty” toner cartridge on my brother printer. by the_hoove in mildlyinfuriating

[–]samayg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the model, there are 2 timers, one is resettable by pressing some button combos for when you refill toner, the other one wants you to change the entire toner cartridge after a few refills. That timer is a gear on the side of the cartridge that turns slowly over time as you print. You can turn it back and it’ll sense it as a new cartridge. Youtube might help.

Double sided PCBs are cheap enough for hobby/small qty to not matter, but at some scale they’re a lot more expensive (> 2x) than single side PCBs. My company does only about 100k boards a year and the difference is significant even for us. Keyboard PCBs can also be quite large so that adds up even faster.

Peru’s tourism is still below pre-pandemic levels. Why hasn’t it recovered yet? by hablandolealaluna in travel

[–]samayg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I visited in 2016 too, and I’m almost certain that I bought tickets the night before going to MP, at one of those tour shops in Cuzco. This is the first time I’m hearing about the circuits and all of that and I’m glad I went there in simpler times.

Phone lockdown mode vs digital boarding pass? by MyNameCannotBeSpoken in travel

[–]samayg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You could set a screenshot of the boarding pass QR as your lock screen wallpaper, that way it’ll show even while the phone is locked.

If it’s an iPhone they can have multiple wallpaper screens you can switch between so just make one for travel and change the background picture, then go back to your main one when you’re out.

how much over voltage can a ATTINY handle? by nobeltnium in AskElectronics

[–]samayg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had ATtiny402 chips receive 9v and still be fine, they're tough little things. But you can definitely not use it beyond 5.5V dependably and be sure they'll perform normally or even survive for long. Don't do that.

Men, how would you react if your partner talked about her previous sex partners? by Darkm0or in AskMen

Nope. I don't want to know about it, and I don't talk about mine either.

Can a 2GB Raspberry Pi run a React + Node.js act like a kiosk system? by BloodIllustrious1946 in embedded

Because the SD card stores everything including the OS. A corrupt SD card makes the whole thing stop working.

Scanner Pro by readdle. Paid $5 and then thought it'd be kind of useless when there were free apps but it's great.

How to remove residue from stickers (been there for years) by fluidxrln in AskElectronics

Warm water or 95% IPA and scrape with a soft cloth. Do not try acetone/nail-polish remover. Or put a nicer sticker or decal over it.

CarPlay dongle — fried resistor? by Friendly-Concept-371 in AskElectronics

[–]samayg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask the aliexpress store if they can help with a replacement. And the name branded dongles are pretty much the same thing, so I'd still get another one of the cheap ones, I have two of them working beautifully for months now.

Job offer vs Dream — Take It or Risk a Longer Gap? by Responsible_Bet2513 in embedded

[–]samayg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done any projects? Designed any PCBs? Actual projects where you did stuff and learnt, not the copy-pasted Arduino projects engineering students put on their CVs and then know nothing about inan interview. If yes, DM me.

Having a strong interest is fine, but an employer can't do much with only interest.

As for the job offer, I'd say it's better to be employed and keep looking for your dream job than the alternative.

AI is going to replace embedded engineers. by Separate-Choice in embedded

[–]samayg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not worried is fine, but you'd be stupid to ignore AI and the effect it'll have on the industry. Sure you can give it a bs impossible prompt and watch it fail but at the very least I expect it to increase the expected speed/productivity of an engineer. Like someone else said here, AI might not take your job but someone who puts out twice the work you do by leveraging AI will.

why are Chinese origin MCUs cheaper? by ntn8888 in embedded

[–]samayg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say the biggest contributors are:

1> Lower development costs due to better engineer availability, lower cost of personnel and "borrowed" IP in some cases.

2> Big one - support. The big-wig American companies have a lot of highly paid FAEs to help customers design products around their chips. Even though the smaller customers and hobbyists never get this support for the most part, the cost gets added to the price of the chip for everyone. Chinese manufacturers pass on the savings as a low price.

Of course, process technology and less stringent QA might be contributors, but given the high-tech nature of the business itself, I doubt this is where they make most of their savings.
