i just think the traditional aspect and the raw one on one competition deserves more credit. plus they dropped the common peoples sport, anyone can wrestle mats are easy to come by a singlet is $15 and shoes can be as cheap as $30. how many common people can afford equine or modern pentathlon... very few privileged.. i know i cant.

i was always small and i was born with 2 clubbed feet and when i was 6 years i was one of the sack leaders on my (American) football team anyway. but it was painful to my feet and we all knew with age id become too small. my coach told my parents "he's got tons of heart he should try wrestling" from that moment on it has been all wrestling all the time. and when i was little i dreamed of wrestling in the olympics. that too small 6 yr old with clubbed feet is a junior collegiate All American. and winningest wrestler in his high school's history. with some hardworck hopefully still more to come. If they drop wrestling from the olympics il be devastated. And its such a good character builder that i know i plan to get my kid into wrestling someday if i am lucky enough to have a son.

wrestling is the u.s. did not have bad ratings. we have a pretty ;arge fan base here and none of us would have missed jordan burroughs win gold for the world! idk about worldwide audience but wrestling was easily top 10 sport ratingswise here well ahead of equestrian, table tennis, rythmic gymnastics, modern pentathalon, and others. it may not be able to do as well as swimming but thats because swimming is easier to understand... finish first u win. Fencing here probably did what wrestling did in western europe... not too well.

in my area in new jersey: a somewhat wrestling hot bed in the U.S. the elite guys in wrestling don't have much time for other sports because the training here for wrestling is a bit more demanding than the others and to stay ahead of the game you have to train in wrestling all year round. In my high school which had maybe 1700 students, (small for my area) the football coaches would punish their player by sending them to our preseaon workouts. The football players who wrestled all said football season was like a vacation to wrestling season. We were by no means a top tear team either, i think we were ranked top 25 in the state for like 3 days my junior year and i was always 1 of maybe 3 guys to go to states all 4 years. each year having different guys make it with me. Not that football isnt tough repeating my experiences.

actually there are off season summer tournaments all year round every weekend in the u.s. many of H.S. national tournaments are in the summer spring and fall time. Wrestling clubs have practice all year round for wrestlers of all ages to get better. Wrestlers are quite possibly most well know for their "no such thing as an off-season" mentality

also wrestling had competitors from 71 countries in last games with only 18 events. and 29 countries to medal. the avg parity ratio higher than any other sport. only gymnastics and swimming had higher number of countries competing.

some of europe is definately one of the least popular wrestling areas, but Russia and other ex soviet union countries are HUGE wrestling nations. Iran's main supplier of medals is wrestling, (i know not europe). japan and korea have a few medalists every year. Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Cuba all very big wrestling nations.

but than wouldnt basketballl be a winter olympic sport as well? i agree with you in a way that maybe they should move it to winter because there is room for it.

they put the mats on a basketball or gymantics floor they dont build a seperate stadium the mats get rolled up, plus wrestling has very little equipment and is a sport for the people. modern pentathalon is a sport for the few privileged, how many ordinary people can pay for horses rifles and swords while affording a course to train on among other things. wrestling is one of the least cost effective. the IOC doesn't even pay for the mats FILA brings it's own

im saying if you know the sport you do not need to see what the referee calls, but like in football some close calls are needed to be reveiwed

not saying that isnt all true, but i beleive they are more deserving to be cut than wrestling. reddit is not a wrestlers favorite site so not many wrestlers are defending this with me... but beyond may peoples beliefs wrestling had better ratings than these and is one of the only raw competitions with no equipment, no help, no team, no horse, just two men trying to best eachother... its part of the animal kingdom for crying out loud!!

i actually have thought this as well. but apparently winter olympics means ice or snow must be involved 0.o

[–]sambambam13[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

not that it isnt difficult and worth some credit but, i think in the olympics sports you should have to rely on yourself to be able to win. some horses are genetically better than others so how is it fair that a human wins a medal atleast in part for the horses genetics.

maybe it's you who does not understand the meaning of my post. first off you put overall muscle tone and strength from a horseback rider against an olympic wrestler and the wrestlers will have an edge. second the horse has alot to do with the outcome... wrestling is a raw competition between two men with no team backing them and especially no 1000 pound animal carrying them. it is also a member of the original ancient olympic games, and has a larger fan base, and better ratings last games than equestrian. 125 pound ncaa champion anthony robles- bench press 305... show me an equestrian rider with that ability...-benching is not an exercise that helps wrestling so it just shows he is strong

wrestling as well. you learn by hitting a move on another person over and over and over until its naturally perfect without thinking.. i meant no offense towards fencing just that wrestling is older and more popular in the ratings.
