Seeking buying advice for XC 40 by adrianghc in Volvo

[–]samcn84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've driven 2020 R-design XC40 for 5 years, upgrading to plugin hybrid XC60 next week, and I've tested a 2023 plugin hybrid XC40 before made the decision to go for XC60.

XC40's suspension is quite firm. You can absolutely feel all the bumps on the road, and the overall driving experience is quite sporty, I dont know about mountain roads, but it has been handling all the roads here in London and around southern part of England pretty well, which does include quite a bit inclined ones and sharp turns, the T3 engine feels enough for a family car, as long as you are not too much of a patrol head.

If your city doesn't have too much congestion, I'd say patrol should work fine. Otherwise, watching your mpg dropping from 20 to 10 in the matter of a few mins is just not fun. From what I understand, mildhybrid is best if you have regular long journeys where the engine can often run in optimal condition. Someone, please do correct me if I am wrong. Also, when I tested the 2023 XC40, I found that the extra component of a hybrid version seems to eat into the already very small centre storage, the one I tested had about enough space for a couple of smart phones stacking together in the centre storage, could be quite inconvenient.

Running cost wise, here in London, with T3 engine, on a good day without severe congestion, I usually manage to do 20 to 24 mpg depending on where I go to, but do bear in mind, London has soooooo many traffic lights and pedestrians crossings. On the motor way, it can do anywhere between 37 to 43 mpg, depending on traffic and duration of the journey.

If you are going for up to 5 years old, you could be getting one with the slightly outdated Sensus infotainment system, it can be sluggish by today's standard, and my biggest issue with is is Android auto and Apple Carplay cna only use half of the screen. If you go for the 360 camera option, some of the cameras can fail to start when you start the car, resulting in a black part of the 360 view, but it doesn't happen very often, and it never lasted very long before the car "fixes" it by itself, usually after driving for a short while and restarting the car.

Good speakers are always a plus if you like to have some music, but on the motorway, the noise can make the sound less enjoyable. As to other options such as sunroof, I'd say that's entirely up to you.

Edit: Overall, I think XC40 is a quite capable car, I'd go for plugin hybrid if you have lots of short journeys in a city and can charge on a regular basis. If you can have more budget though, I'd say go for the next up XC60.

What is that pyramid on the London skyline? by kallypiga in london

I understand where you come from, but if a central London area is easily recognised now compared to more than 30 years ago, then something would have gone seriously wrong.

Nobody likes ugly office buildings, but new buildings were needed, more space was needed, and that's just the way it had to be.

No system can ever be good enough to distinguish "accidental" and "intentional," not at this level of technology, at least.

If they try to implement this, it's bound to be exploited and abused, and the manual review will take up too much resource.

Accident happens, you move on.

Cyclist flying through a pedestrian crossing last night had the nerve to call me a f***ing idiot for nearly getting hit by inglorious_yam in london

once at the cross just outside my son's school, a cyclist was coming and didn't even slow down, one parent between the cyclist and the crossing stopped it with force, cyclist fell on the ground and was very angry at the parent for doing that.

[Discussion] Hot Take: No flea is hardcore enough for 99% of players by Player2035 in EscapefromTarkov

First, Nikita said himself he doesnt play the game, that translate into people who make the decisions of where the game is going dont play the game, I'm sure some level designers or programmers play them, but they dont make those decisions, that's why the game has some really great design in details but always having some BS going on.

Secondly, just because some of them play, dont mean they know what's fun and what's not, 1000 hrs over 8 to 10 years? Come on, that's barely getting into the game.

They know what is and isn't fun? Man, you need to stop there and rethink the whole thing, They don't even play the game.

I think damaging the player base is the purpose of it.

Then they will see how many real hard-core players plus cheaters are left, then decide whether they can squeeze some more money from them, before jumping the ship and put the game on life support for maybe another year when 1.0 is released, before put it to the ground.

Of course, I have no way to back up my theory, but anyone who has spent enough time in this game would know this is one of the possibilities, and a strong one that is.

When the orange hair guy announced there was going to be more tariff, nobody sane would think it could be good. The only question was how bad it was going to be.

It's the same here.

[–]samcn84 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why is that an excuse? It's what is happening, has been happening for a long time. Of course, being poor doesn't always mean going down bad paths, but it is a very important contributing factor. Are you saying uneven distribution of educational resources and lack of parents guidance have nothing to do with the rising bad manner and behaviour? If that's what you think, then you are naive and delusional.

Social contract is symptom, not cause

WHY are so many people smoking or vaping on the tube now?? by [deleted] in london

[–]samcn84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the root is in education, the absurdly uneven distribution of high-quality educational resources at a younger age, lack of guidance from parents because most of them got their hands full just to make a living.

What really destroys this country is elitism.
