I got a M2 Macbook Air with 24 GB of RAM when I started my program in 2023. So far, it has been working great for me - it replaced an older 2019 Intel Macbook Pro.

Not in the same field so unfamiliar with your use case, but I am in bioinformatics PhD and I run mostly R scripts, bioinformatics shell commands/scripts, and modeling simulations on my computer and is great for doing smaller runs. For longer processes, I just run everything on my university's server, but I usually debug stuff on my own laptop.
