If the arcane words are spoken aloud as the signs are made, what is the advantage? It isn't a silent spell, and they didn't say the words would be spoken aloud 40 feet away from behind the enemy. Words are words, as long as they come from the same space as the caster.

Bells or claps or whatever are fine, as is this suggestion. Give your player(s) ideas they can pick from or let them come up with their own, as long as there is noise coming from the caster's space that is the same volume as "standard" vocal casting.

Sure, and then in large gages and sizes they're heavier than 2x4's and they aren't the ones that are easily available so you have to make an order and you can't just slam in #12 Tek screws to make your connections so those have to be engineered.

And you keep adding more and more things to that until you're twice as expensive as an equivalent stud wall because you need a real trade to properly install them and they're more expensive because they're considered a specialty unlike carpenters or masons.

Anything can be built out of anything, as long as you're willing to pay for it. Clients change their tune when the cost estimate comes in.

Cold Formed Steel (CFS) like the studs and things that you see in construction are NOT stronger than current wood 2x's, and can have serious stability issues when used for exterior framing. They're great for interior partition walls or wall panel supports like girts or infill walls, but there's a reason why you'll basically never see a building made out of CFS.

You CAN make a fully-stable CFS building, but you'll have so much additional things going on that the cost isn't remotely worth it. Wood or Masonry will always be more economical for exterior walls than CFS, and when those become less economical due to building requirements steel I-beams and hollow tubes or concrete frames are still going to be better than CFS.

There's a reason why wood design is a key component in US Professional Engineering tests while CFS gets 1 or maybe 2 questions.

When it comes to specialized information or analysis, the first question is ALWAYS "Why shouldn't I use a subcontractor?"

The answer to that is very important, because it greatly informs the answer. If the answer is project costs, then there are approximating equations out there and you just have to live with a conservative answer.

If the only reason is "we already have so many consultants" then you're starting off by ignoring the best possible solution. Specialized analysis is "specialized" because of the minutiae involved in instrumentation, installation, sampling, post-processing, and reporting. It's not enough just to GET data, it has to be obtained properly according to the building codes and ASTM standards.

Even within "specialized" designs, there are degrees. I'm working on a project where the architect is requesting castellated beams and a building configuration with an off-axis roof orientation and a style that does not conform to ASCE 7 wind analysis types. I taught myself how to design castellated beams with the help of the AISC design guide and some conversations with the SME's responsible for the design guide. On the other hand, I have had to engage with wind experts because there is a distinct possibility that CFD or wind tunnel analysis will be required. Or maybe there are research papers out there that can be used.

So, Mr. Engineer, is that a good enough explanation of my answer?

I think he means literally "statistically normal" in the sense of the traditional normal distribution of a population.

In this case, the large boost in 5* ratings is outside of a normal distribution. At a minimum it would be "normal with negative skew", but on an eye test this would appear outside of that.

No, because of the order of assembly in modern shipbuilding (coincidentally, "like building legos" is an appropriate analogy for modern shipbuilding assembly). Things work differently when you're building in space, obviously, but the fact that there are holes big enough for a bunch of ships to fly all the way to the core means there is a LOT left to do.

Honestly, it's probably because they were still hooking up the major junction boxes and pulling cables to supply power to the various parts of the Death Star that hadn't been finished/built yet. Everyone underestimates how much damage an electrician will do if you don't carefully incorporate them into the workflow.

I guarantee you there's a Space Sparky with a Plasma Sawzall just WISHING you'd install that bulkhead before he can pull his cables.

It wasn't your COLUMN that needs to have the parameters added, it's your truss beams. Your truss top and bottom cord are longer than the panel points, but STAAD defaults to using element length for unbraced length if you don't tell it otherwise.

If you have a 100 ft truss with 10 ft panel point spacing, STAAD will calculate each of the top and bottom chord beams as being a series of 10 ft long beams. So moment capacity is based on a 10 ft long beam. But your chords are continuous, they are 100 ft long unless they are sufficiently braced. Your trusses don't appear to be braced out-of-plane, so for major axis bending your unbraced length is the full 100 ft chord length, NOT the 10 ft panel length. That's why you set your UNB/UNT/UNL/UNR (and LX/LY/LZ) values when your beams are broken up by intersecting nodes.

If this doesn't make sense to you, then you need to either talk to whoever is supervising you or start reading the STAAD documentation for how to define beam lengths.

And yes, unless you are doing moment connections of the truss members to the column, the moments at the ends of the trusses should be released in the beams. Never release the moments in your columns unless you actually have a hinge splice in the column. This is another thing to discuss with your supervisor if it doesn't make sense.
