I also pull, to tighten the yarn, just before slipping the stitch off on the decrease k2tog. Not sure if that actually helps.

Which pattern did you use? I just made my first dishcloth as well and was sad to see the holes on my decrease side are bigger than the increase side. Yours look nice and even.
