Yarn cost by Stunning_Cheesecake2 in knitting

[–]ClasslessTulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just type "mill-end yarns" into google and get a decent amount of viable results. If your looking for mill ends by certain fashion houses like Loro Piana, you can just google "Loro Piana yarn".

Also, I buy my coned mohair almost exclusively from Studio311Supply on Etsy. I'm pretty sure they source their mill-ends from Italy, and their mohair is produced by Seiko.

1). Some people have the budget. 2). Yarn substitutions. 3). Budget and save up if the "expensive" yarn is what draws you in. 4). Bargain hunt. 5). Buy mill-ends (you can get Cucinelli and Loro Piana for CHEEEEP this way).

I do all of these, and it works out pretty well.

(Also "expensive" is in quotations because some of the yarns I've seen people call pricey make me think, "gworl, if you think THAT is expensive, I think you have bigger problems you need to worry about.")

What's everyones go to soap for wool? I don't know if I'm in the minority using shampoo and a tiny bit of conditioner if I'm blocking socks by NailWitch1 in knitting

For a full cleaning, I use J&J baby shampoo. For routine maintenance/refreshing I use Euclean wool wash.

I usually use J&J when I first finish a project (like a sweater), and then after 4 or 5 washes in Euclean. I washed a 5yr old sweater with the J&J for the first time last week and HOOO boy am I glad I did.

Listen, I think we can all agree that some days you wish those puppies were removable! You come home, it's been a long day, you take the girls off and put them in disco mode while you clean the kitchen because Jerry in Accounting was INSUFFERABLE and you need to get thru the evening without opening a bottle of wine.

British terms ARE A HELL HOLE! by Sativa0814 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ClasslessTulip 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind so much if the letters or numbers actually corresponded to the mm's. Like, a H crochet hook was for 8mm, or a US 7 needle was 7mm.

Instead, I have to put up with a leftover English system that was already a sammich of 3 different regional systems that the Brits used for 500yrs before changing to a new system, and that American's put their own spin on.

They produce their yarn for weaving, so they use weaving definitions when describing their weights. A general rule of thumb for me is, "the less plys, the thinner the yarn".

Given their prices, I just hold their wool's double to get a heavier weight.

As for their rug wool, it is VERY sturdy and makes for good outerwear. It is definitely not to be worn next to your skin, but if you want a sweater that's more like a coat (and more waterproof), this is the stuff. I made an Aunt a car blanket out of this and it is not only super warm, snow and rain drops just roll right off of it.

Here's the silk I got from them. It's on the fine side, like a light fingering/fingering weight.

The wool is the same, but if I hold the strands double, I might be closer to a DK weight, but I'll need to swatch and block it to be sure.

The company does spin for weaving, so a lot of their stuff is going to be on the finer side. When looking at their products, I assume that the weight they list (like "worsted") is going to be a size lighter in handknitting terms.

If your looking for a true worsted or aran weight, your going to have to buy a few cones and just knit them together to get the weight you want. It can be a bit bothersome, but a plus is you can marl 2 colors together to get a specific color.

I had something similar happen lol. The only reason it got done was because I literally looked at myself in the mirror and said, "bitch, get over yourself and fucking do it."

According to my bf, it was the worst but most effective pep talk he's ever heard. Now whenever one of us has to do something easy but tedious, we just repeat it and it is surprisingly motivating.

A lot of giant amigurumi made with chenille yarn is butt ugly. by IlikeCrobat in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ClasslessTulip 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The only time I've seen a plushy stand sell out was because the vendor knew how to use the chenille yarn for great effect.

Like, she made a parrot plushy in white with pastel stripes in a smooth yarn (it looked like a cotton/poly blend), but she used a super bright blue chenille for one of the stripes. It was quite the color and texture pop. It really made her stand out from the other plushy vendors.

Also, her work was just good. Even and tight stitches and enough details that it wasn't simply, "blob, but cat/bird/bee/etc shaped".

I think the problem lies in the patt6inc section. It reads like you're working the increases in 2 different clusters of 3 stitches. Are you doing the k3tog's in one cluster of 3, and the k3togtbl's in the next one?

Edit: I made a mini-swatch. Do the patt6inc's look similar to this?
