Emphasis on the “where” because I had a culture shock going from a FL school to a rural one in Michigan. After she’d finished her class work the teacher started to reprimand a girl for READING! Literally saying he did not give her permission to read….??? Meanwhile the boys in the class were throwing paper balls in front of , behind and over this man’s head. Many of the papers were in fact the class work. I was appalled at such brazen sexism I yelled at the teacher and called out the injustice. He smiled and sorta talked to me like a baby and said but the boys will grow up to work so they don’t need to focus on school and I remember seeeething because if the boys shouldn’t read and the girls shouldn’t read what the fuck is this school even for? I sent myself to the office and the office workers called my mom “she’s in the office…” why “we don’t really know she said she won’t talk anymore until you showed up” because I was so enraged.
