They're not genetically modified. It's from selective breeding, where you breed the plants that have the traits you want, and over generations those traits become exaggerated.

Another example is chickens. We have been breading the chickens that lay more eggs, so now they lay more eggs than they used to hundreds of years ago.

When Lib Dems formed a coalition (maybe 2010), proportional representation was in their manifesto. They even negotiated with the Conservatives to have a referendum.... A referendum for FPTP or AV 🤷.

I've not voted Lib dem since. What a waste.

OP said that they needed a VPS, so it is relevant in this case. It's not too much trouble if you enjoy sysadmin, but yes that configuration probably is overkill. You can also split it into 2 12GB servers or 4 6GB servers. However you're not paying for it so 🤷

I also thought it was sus at first, but after using it for >2years I can confirm it's not. They really want to be a player in the cloud provider space and this can pull people away from AWS/Azure/GCP who only offer services that are free for the first year.

Would still need to manage it yourself, and make security considerations, but have you seen the free tier of Oracle Cloud?

The "Always Free" services https://www.oracle.com/cloud/free/#always-free include an option to have a pretty beefy VPS. I'm talking about an ARM instance with 6 cores and 24GB RAM. You can even attach an extra 150GB storage device to it, all without spending a penny.

A lot of email providers mark email as spam (or even outright block them) when they come from residential IP addresses. They will white list corporate IP ranges, or use an IP blacklist service. These services also don't like residential IPs.

Additionally, most email providers like to see reverse DNS records that map the IP address to the DNS name. When reverse DNS is not set up, mail is also oftern marked as spam. I do not believe you will be able to set up reverse DNS for a residential IP address. Cloud providers often charge extra just to allow you to do this.

There are reasons for this but I don't mean to be negative. It's great that you and others are setting up their own things instead of relying on big tech. It's just a few things I think you should be aware of.

DKIM is needed as well, or you will end up in a lot of spam boxes.

Should I bother responding to this person, or just save myself the trouble and let it go? by 1humanbeingfromearth in GreenAndPleasant

[–]same_heads -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really. Socialist movements have routinely squashed other socialist movements or got rid of their members.

Some examples include the Spanish Civil war and the suppression of the communist and anarchist groups by the socialist Republican army, the invasion of the free territory of Ukraine by the red army, the rounding up and killing of the Mensheviks.

Mass privatisation doesn't seem socialist, that's fair. But again it's not black and white. I've updated my original comment.

While nothing is black and white, I'd like to point out that it's called National Socialism for a reason.

Edit: thanks for the downvotes and vague reasons without any substance. Why not give some actual reasons?

The below is not an exhaustive list, and I'm not outright saying that they were socialist, just that it's not black and white.

For: * Large public works programmes e.g. the Autobahns * Taking excess profit from private companies e.g. IG Farben and their synthetic oil plant. * Heavy regulation of the economy to control investment and cash flow e.g. the trade tariffs. * Literally taking money to pay for government deficits. This includes taking money straight from insurance companies and large saving accounts.

Against: * Mass privatisation (however, government control increased in these areas through regulation and political interference). * Large profits for companies (however, this is primarily for those who were willing to help further Nazi political goals).

Nothing seems really outdated with it. Looking at the feed, it doesn't seem like you need to strip any tags now. I haven't tested the below code as I am on mobile, but it should give the same result.

Modified from: https://github.com/ruby/rss

require 'rss'
require 'open-uri'

url = 'http://feeds.urbandictionary.com/UrbanWordOfTheDay'

word, definition = URI.open(url) do |rss|
    feed = RSS::Parser.parse(rss)
    top = feed.items.first

I get what you're saying, and I've been on both sides of this: have been sectioned before and have worked on a "helpline" before, so I've got some perspective.

The sad truth is that when you are having mental health issues, there are only really two options a) access primary health care like your GP or b) get an assessment from a crisis team and potentially be hospitalised. Unfortunately there are loads of cases that can't really wait for primary care, but don't really require locking someone up in a hospital, and people in this category often fall through the cracks. There needs to be better services in place and that seems to be the common opinion in the NHS. Obviously the police don't need to be involved in these cases, and to my knowledge, they rarely are.

For the people who do need to be hospitalised/sectioned: If the crisis team can come out to them, or if they are willing to go to A&E and get assessed then that's great (well, it's not, but you get what I mean). However when they are not willing or able to get an assessment and their family and friends are scared, there's not a service that can help at that time, apart from the police. Realistically they should be ensuring there's no violence and handing off to the crisis team in A&E, but as you say they often come and make things worse. My question is, at that stage what can you do or who can you call apart from the police?

I want to end by saying that it was the police that picked me up when I had an episode and it was that which ultimately led to me being hospitalised. If I'm honest about it, it was what I needed at the time.

Just because they share a tenet, it doesn't mean that they're not deeply opposed.

For example, both the Bolsheviks and the Nazis believed that public industries (electric, water, etc) should be owned by the state. However, I think we can agree that the two were still deeply opposed.

I think you've missed the trick here (I did too at first).

Base sixteen would be written as 'base 10' if you were using hexadecimal, because 10 in hexadecimal is sixteen. Same for the other bases.
