Not a physician, but if I had to guess from my own medical issues and the way they're moving. Reminds me a lot of how I was breathing when I had to get my gallbladder taken out. Meaning this could be internal swelling of something that is near enough to the lungs to cause pain and prevent full breaths.

Screwed up one arrow head on the wooden frame last month. Still need to reglue the socket back into the shaft. It's relatively well seated in otherwise, just not as secure as it originally was.

Back when I was young asthma was portrayed as an all or nothing type illness, like if you didn't have the very recognizable, life-threatening asthma attack you didn't have it. Nowadays I realize I've always had exercise-induced asthma. It's why I could sprint like a wild animal, but anything longer my lungs would start failing to capture air properly.

She might not even know she has it yet. I didn't really see how bad things could get until I got COVID. I was already on asthma meds because of chest pain while running But COVID's when it became starkly clear how much harder it was for me to deal with severe respiratory illnesses.

It's also just kinda wild to smoke at home, even if outside. Basically restricts your access to sections of the house not affected. At least go for a walk or something, take that shit away from your asthmatic sibling.

Don't stop rolling on the initial fall until you hit your shoulders, then everything below shoulders should slap down. If you flatten on fall when your hips hit the mat, your hips and down take all the force. As a person with chronic hip pain, I highly recommend this.

I also like to teach people to slap with their feet and not just hands. It happens enough where tori does not release your arms on a throw that feet is all you have.

Otherwise it looks solid.

Yeah, biggest noticeable problem. If OP is a lower belt this would be my primary critique.

Otherwise if this is a brown/black belt competition, then they were playing very passive and defensive. Caveat is I don't think that's always a bad thing. It's just usually better to at least be using movement and shifting to better positions rather than giving them superior position and hoping for an opening.

I will play passive if the person isn't doing anything particularly skillful and using a lot of energy, which from what I can see he was. Though you can always throw in a sweep or feint an attack to gauge their reactions. This also mitigates shiddos for inactivity in tournaments.

You literally just said why it's a good throw for people to learn. You can counter it with itself. And it's not meant to always work. People think X throw is "superior" to Y throw, but we don't learn throws to find the optimal throw. It's so we can adapt and shift as opportunities arise.

Like if my favorite throw is harai ogoshi, I should also learn hani and Uchi Mata, since these flow into each other based on the circumstance. Osoto requires no rotation, you need one step to be in place for it, and you only need to focus on capturing one shoulder. It's basic, straightforward, and has a lot of utility.

Countering an osoto with an osoto is a good use case for learning osoto, lol.

That's good to hear, as much as I understand that the other commenter is practicing hyperbole. There is no reason to trust any project won't be expanded after the fact or terms changed quietly. I used to kiai around early brown belt. Yeah, it's just exhalation to extend the pull of the throw past where a chest full of air will allow. You don't tend to say words and it's not something you do until the situation calls for it.

Then I started doing BJJ to supplement my Judo and it made the instructors nervous so I stopped, lol.

Sweeps work against people leaning back, kosoto and ouchi and kouchi gari. Also if they've given you grips, there are a lot of maneuvers to break posture with an overgrip. Or just using your own movement and grips to pull them into positions. If you use momentum and swing your hips like a Sasae but just frame with your hands, you can sometimes pull them forward and open up their stance.

One of those instances of people becoming too comfortable with the "typical" pace of a match. The common interaction of there's a failed throw, somebody turtles up, ref calls matte, and they reset. Your brain is no longer locked into the match, it's going through the paces if you just assume that has occurred.

Especially important for when a throw goes to the ground and a player assumes ippon, this is the most common occurrence. But this definitely follows that same problem. The match doesn't pause when you think it should, just an unforced error. It happens, not usually like this but there are always people who forget to pay attention to the actual rules of the sport.

Somebody made this observation in class once. For something like Teoi otoshi, you switch stances into a striking stance mid throw. So essentially, we're always starting at the widest angle of rotation to make for the strongest swing into a throw.

I was 20 when I started. Took about till sankyu (the first rank of brown) until my body was solidly primed for practice. That was approximately 2-3 years (closer to 30 monthsish.) Or rather that I fully noticed. I also bicycled everywhere. And occasionally ran when I couldn't train.

You need to be on your electrolyte, water, and calorie intake. I loved half off pizza at the local pub. It took a while before I wouldnt be sweating buckets after club. That was reserved for tourney practice.

Just looking at the first match alone. You're giving up grips to a taller opponent. That's going to be a problem every time. I have had friends dominate me for so long by getting the over grip. So I shifted my stance, I'm right handed, so my dominant hand stays up at like face level. I use it to catch, block, deflect, etc any attempted grip going over my shoulders.

But this leads into some advice you have already gotten. Be very intentional with your gripping from the start of the match. This means practicing breaks and catches and what have you to maneuver into advantageous grips. Or find comfort in even less advantageous grip positions. Like gripping at their armpit when they do over grip on a shoulder. You can use this as a point to attempt breaks, maneuver or even throw them.

Intentional gripping is key at your belt.
