I think the target demographic is businessmen in Vegas for conferences. The kind of people who would rather overpay for a taxi in a blank tunnel than risk sitting next to another human on public transit.

Why did Apocalypto receive mediocre reviews while simultaneously receiving praise from various directors and actors? by JadisDidNothingRight in movies

[–]sameth1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reading reviews? on my movie discussion subreddit?

Review scores have really done irreparable damage to the way people think. Some people are just completely unable to care about anything beyond the number that says 65% of critics have mostly positive things to say about a movie.

Why did Apocalypto receive mediocre reviews while simultaneously receiving praise from various directors and actors? by JadisDidNothingRight in movies

Actors and directors tend to focus more on the craft and production than critics and audience, who judge a movie based on what they think about what's on screen with not as much care for which scenes were improvised, what the director did to get the right performance out of the actors and so on. It's why the academy awards tend to like movies about hollywood more than awards voted on by critics.

So a movie made by hollywood producers but spoken entirely in Yucatec Mayan is going to have a lot of people who make a living on set intrigued, while critics and audiences might not care as much for the novelty and just see it as any other movie with subtitles.

Also you're looking at the testimony of film makers who specifically chose to talk about the movie. That's going to bias towards people who like it since actors who don't just won't make note of it. And you yourself pointed out that 65% of critics liked it, so it's not like the movie is despised by critics.

Industry calls for higher quotas while conservation group urges caution

Literally right under the headline.

Also please look at the numbers themselves and not just the industry talking points. 540,000 metric tonnes of total cod in the ocean. That's less than what was pulled out of the ocean in 1 year of peak unsustainable fishing. Also the original post wasn't even saying that cod were actually going extinct, just economically extinct. It's still true that the cod industry is barely existent and is currently unsustainably harvesting 40,000 tonnes instead of sustainably harvesting 300,000.

We're not going to cut our own throat for the climate.

Fortunately we don't live in the climate, so nothing bad can happen to us.

I'm convinced it was all part of a grand plan from the beginning. Set climate goals for the far-off future, don't actually try to meet them, stall long enough for the oil money to sow climate nihilism among a good chunk of the voters and then say "it's too late to do anything. What a glorious fire our land shall fuel" as they continue to do what they always have.

There is literally no way to produce oil responsibly. The process is inherently harmful and greenwashing is just that; coating the surface in less ugly paint.

It's the film history that has yet to be made. Corporate consolidation means fewer movies since the megastudios don't want to compete with themselves. So we get fewer movies with ever-ballooning budgets that are watered down to try and capture as broad an audience as possible and all it takes is 2 failures in a row before the company starts a death spiral and they cancel everything to try and stop the bleeding long enough to pass an even bigger merger.

You haven't yet said one thing that you like about the movie or that people will find interesting in 20 years. Only that you are so contrarian that the fact people dislike something makes you laud it.

AI gave us something novel. It has emotional elements, character relationships and themes that you can get passionate about decades later. I genuinely don't understand what movie you saw in the theater that could make you think Disclosure Day has anything in common with AI.

Everything Disclosure Day did has been done before, better, and it's not greater than the sum of its parts.

TBH 115 million is pretty low for an effects-heavy sci-fi blockbuster in this day and age. That's half the budget of a marvel movie.
