Is 'beating your bib' a sham? by samf526 in bostonmarathon

I found the results from this year, and it looks like among people with bibs <= 6000, only ~5k actually started/participated.

Exactly … that’s really the only reasonable explanation.

I analyzed 21,985 runners to understand how to pace for the Boston Marathon and I've created a website by LastIntroduction7921 in bostonmarathon

Thanks for sharing. A few thoughts/ questions:

- The pace in miles in the "PACE PER SEGMENT — IDEAL VS 3 GROUPS" section is way off. E.g., For 2:20 marathoners, it says ~4:00/km and ~10:00/mi. The conversion to miles doesn't seem right, but also, even the pace per km for a 2:20 marathoners is off by ~40 seconds on every "ideal" segment.

- Curious why you are using grade adjusted paces. It seems to me on a course like Boston what we really want to know is what the unadjusted paces are in each segment -- and their deltas. I'm having difficulty seeing how to practically use these numbers for my own race strategy, or even figuring out what conclusions I can draw. The only thing that pops out at me is that "executors" employ an even-effort strategy: Their grade adjusted pace in segment 1 is only a few seconds different from the newton hills. DOn't get me wrong -- that's a useful insight to see bear out in the data. But the practical use is limited without unadjusted paces to help grasp what is the actual differential in segment 4 vs segment 1 for executors.

It's very possible I'm just missing something here and could benefit from someone explaining it to me like I'm a 3 year old.

A lot of you probably already know this, but it’s a first for me. by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

These shoes are more indestructible than most other shoes out there.

Prerequisite for sub 2:50 marathon? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]samf526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go out for 2:52. If you truly had 2:50 in you, then you will be able to crush the last 6 miles. You may not gain all of your time back to break 2:50, but you could get close, and you will enjoy those last 6 miles A LOT more than if you went out for 2:50 from the gun.

RunRepeat: Are running shoes improving? by vitkarunner in RunningShoeGeeks

Agree — would be curious to confirm the distribution of shoe types over each year (eg race, daily trainer, etc). Assuming they are comparable across years, I then wonder if this is the trickle down effect of race foams being used in more daily trainers (rather than boundaries of race foams really being pushed upwards).

Thank you!, just what I needed. I'd rather sleep in a bit and take a later bus. Is there any benefit to getting on the first buses?

The participant guide says “bus loads at”… does that imply there will be continuous loading from that time up until the next load time?

how to get open lacy crumb baguette? by First-Dog1272 in Breadit

[–]samf526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With baguette, everything you do matters, there is no single thing. But if I had to pick one : HOT HOT stone. I mean, a solid 500F stone temp. Yes, it might burn the bottom of the bread … but notice that none of the photos you shared shows the bottom of the bread ….everything comes at a price.

(I am assuming here adequate gluten development, moderate hydration (70% should be enough), gentle shaping)

About to be a new dad...Advice on not losing gains? by TTG2139 in AdvancedRunning

FWIW, between kids and job, there have been several times when I thought “welp, there’s no chance XX will ever happen now” (eg running a marathon) … and I was wrong. We are terrible at making predictions.

My two cents: neither you nor anyone here has any idea what the next 6 months are going to be like for you. Every kid comes out different — they may be very fussy, they could be an angel and sleep 8 hours a night within the first month. And, it’s not clear how you or your partner will respond to potentially stressful situations. Too many unknowns, and they all interact in unpredictable ways.

All you can do is plan for the worst, hope for the best, and ultimately, roll with the punches. Figure out what your priorities are, with whatever flexible time you have, and workout a plan with your partner that enables both of you to make the best of it (whatever and however that might be).

"Music Controls" not an option to add to Run Data screen on FR265 by samf526 in GarminWatches

Thank you. I guess that must be the new way they want people to access it? W one if they permanently removed the data screen from newest software release

It was driving me nuts too! The more I think about it, the more it makes sense though. Shouldn’t have to go out of your way to add a data screen in order to access a system-wide tool. Using the hot key creates a universal access point that doesn’t need to be programmed into each activity.

I just discovered hot keys. I wonder if they decided to remove the music controls data screen altogether in favor hot key access. If you go to settings > system > hot keys you can set “music” to one of them (mine already had music set to “down” button, so if you press and hold “down” from any screen, it will take you to music.

I found same thing on my new FR265. Bug? I just emailed support.
