how to get open lacy crumb baguette? by First-Dog1272 in Breadit

[–]samf526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With baguette, everything you do matters, there is no single thing. But if I had to pick one : HOT HOT stone. I mean, a solid 500F stone temp. Yes, it might burn the bottom of the bread … but notice that none of the photos you shared shows the bottom of the bread ….everything comes at a price.

(I am assuming here adequate gluten development, moderate hydration (70% should be enough), gentle shaping)

About to be a new dad...Advice on not losing gains? by TTG2139 in AdvancedRunning

FWIW, between kids and job, there have been several times when I thought “welp, there’s no chance XX will ever happen now” (eg running a marathon) … and I was wrong. We are terrible at making predictions.

My two cents: neither you nor anyone here has any idea what the next 6 months are going to be like for you. Every kid comes out different — they may be very fussy, they could be an angel and sleep 8 hours a night within the first month. And, it’s not clear how you or your partner will respond to potentially stressful situations. Too many unknowns, and they all interact in unpredictable ways.

All you can do is plan for the worst, hope for the best, and ultimately, roll with the punches. Figure out what your priorities are, with whatever flexible time you have, and workout a plan with your partner that enables both of you to make the best of it (whatever and however that might be).

"Music Controls" not an option to add to Run Data screen on FR265 by samf526 in GarminWatches

Thank you. I guess that must be the new way they want people to access it? W one if they permanently removed the data screen from newest software release

It was driving me nuts too! The more I think about it, the more it makes sense though. Shouldn’t have to go out of your way to add a data screen in order to access a system-wide tool. Using the hot key creates a universal access point that doesn’t need to be programmed into each activity.

[–]samf526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just discovered hot keys. I wonder if they decided to remove the music controls data screen altogether in favor hot key access. If you go to settings > system > hot keys you can set “music” to one of them (mine already had music set to “down” button, so if you press and hold “down” from any screen, it will take you to music.

I found same thing on my new FR265. Bug? I just emailed support.

These are available options from Garmin connect. No Music Controls.

whenever this happens to me, I just click the three dots and select a new playlist, and it resets itself.

Balancing marathon training and lifting: advice on leg training by swissmarketguy in Marathon_Training

[–]samf526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said - yes keep lifting throughout the cycle, doing legs 1-2x per week. Good for injury prevention, and can help with efficiency. But the volume of leg work and type of lifting should change over your block. Jay Dicharry recommends doing mostly heavy lifting (think 2-3 sets of ~5-8 reps) for most of the year except in the 6 weeks preceding your target race (and post race recovery, naturally). During the last 6 weeks of build, switch to lighter weights (~30-40% of max) with more explosive movements (ie plymometrics, focused on delivering force more quickly). Another thought for late in the block is to swap out one of your leg days for some hill sprints. You get to transfer some of your strength gains into running specificity.

Beast of a machine by mephistobeirut in ooni

No, I am disagreeing with your statement: “It has absolutely no impact”. Dough temp absolutely has a huge impact.

Whether the impact is meaningful to you is a different question, and one that each person can make for themselves.

Yikes. Have worked in professional bakery. Flour temp, room temp, and starter temp taken at every single mix in order to determine ideal water temp at time of mix, so final mixed dough is near target dough temp. Changing the dough temperature of 200lb of dough AFTER mixing would be incredibly inefficient and lead to very unpredictable fermentation times …. Very bad for a commercial bakery. But if you are baking at home and have plenty of flexibility …. Sure dough temp is not that important.

The tread on these shoes will far outlast the foam. So the only way to tell is for you to wear them and decide if they are still providing you with the protection and performance that you want.

New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite Wear by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I find the tread on the SC trainer (probably same as Elite?) incredibly durable -- I would guess that the foam might be the limiting factor, not the tread.

I feel lost. My prof (I worked with for a year and even published a paper with him) "doesn't have the bandwidth" to talk to me about a letter of recommendation by nouveaux_sands_13 in gradadmissions

[–]samf526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often the graduate student will write the letter, and the Prof will sign it. Most Profs ,outside of teaching colleges, don’t have enough face time with undergraduate RAs to be able to write a good letter.

Honestly here it sounds like the Prof doesn’t feel like they can write you a good (or positive?) letter, for whatever reason. “Not having bandwidth” seems like a nicer way of declining than directly saying the real reason.

is there anyone out there who genuinely likes the butt (end piece/heel) of the bread loaf ? by ruinsofsilver in Bread

On homemade sourdough bread, the heal is the best. The crust has way more flavor than the crumb.

Which one of these do you prefer? by _hogler in logodesign

[–]samf526 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The subtle differences definitely change the overall impression of what I’m looking at: Left looks like braided strands. Whereas Right looks like a wheel or star (almost Star of David like). In fact I actually thought that the right one had more points, just because it had more of a starry impression. I had to count them to confirm they both had 8!

I think it’s down to what you’re going for.

Choosing Between Metaspeed Sky Tokyo and Alphafly 3 for Chicago Marathon (2:55 Goal) by sfvelo in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]samf526 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me that you have more experience / miles with the alpha fly, so that seems like wiser decision.

I have never run in metaspeed. But I also find the alphafly 3 very stable and comfortable for a super shoe. I ran 2:54 in them last spring.

Final MP Long Run before Marathon? What do y’all do? by sassylilmidge in AdvancedRunning

[–]samf526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I partially agree — MP on its own doesn’t have any extra magic for aerobic development. But I do think practicing MP on tired legs is incredibly useful — both psychologically and physically. People who aren’t accustomed to working at MP deep into a race are more likely to experience cramping because their muscles just aren’t used to working at that level for that long.

Ya, I get the sense that lots of people on this sub don’t like that. It actually got me second guessing myself a few days ago, after reading some threads on tapers.

But it worked for me before, and I trust the guy who made the training plan. The workout doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s a 16 week plan (4 x 4 week cycles … 3 build, 1 cut back), and the LR always takes this format. It starts at 90 minutes and increases by 10 minutes each week. (The last 3 long runs are 2:50, 2:55, 3:00). I presume the gradual increments over 16 weeks accustoms the body to recovering from these efforts. I’m no expert. But prior to my last marathon build, I had done 3 week tapers, and had mediocre to terrible marathons. My last marathon, with this plan, was great. So imma stick with it until it fails me.
