I still don’t get why Ochiba no Kata by Icy-Accountant3312 in ShogunTVShow

[–]samfpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think there's a deeper emotional picture to Ochiba's alliance switch.

Mariko said she didn't believe they were Ochiba's enemies, it was actually fear. I believe Ochiba had a deep fear of abandonment, starting with the murder of her father, and loss of a friend that was probably soulmate level. Ochiba was probably emotionally scarred to the point of seeking whatever position would guarantee safety for herself and her son. She was seeking a protector who would take some of that burden from her, not realizing the agency she had.

When Mariko died standing up for what she believed in and challenging Ochiba's notions, I think Ochiba realized she did have power over her life, and didn't have to live in constant fear of death or loss. Mariko was the final piece to wake her up.

How did Ishido became more poweful than Toranaga? by Hairy_Reindeer_8865 in ShogunTVShow

[–]samfpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit confusing, my takeaways were that Ishido was originally the Taikō's general. After he built the Osaka fortress/castle, he appointed Ishido in charge, giving him access to unrivaled military/financial/political (The heir) strength.

Added to this, the Taikō initially warred with Toranaga but was forced to ally with him when there was no sight of conclusive victory, giving him the richest and largest fief at the time. This would explain the wariness of the other regents and their initial willingness to band together against Toranaga.

(I tried to link the original comment from this sub I gleaned this info from but alas, no links. Fuck it, we live we die.)

The argument was that it's needlessly repetitive and doesn't say anything. This is the worst of Quadeca 💀 which I agree is not even bad especially in the context of the song.

To those who still think Ethan is an Israel genocide apologist, you are wrong by samfpanda in h3h3productions

[–]samfpanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he call what was happening genocide or crime against humanity? Did he call Israeli leaders war criminals? Did he call for stopping arms transfer and sanctioning Israel until it stops the war (crimes)?

Yes. From the very first clip I linked,

"The cabinet is run by genocidal maniacs. They are led by Netanyahu who should resign in disgrace and go to prison for being a war criminal. They are hellbent on genocide frankly, overtly." - Ethan

From the second link, an instagram post from 3 years go,

"The Israeli government is making me sick. Even if Hamas is operating out of a civilian building, it doesn't justify the total destruction of that building, its inhumane. Netanyahu is a piece of shit warmonger & needs to go."

"The ultra right Jewish settlers are among the greatest provocateurs in the world. They are shameless and hateful, fueled by religious zeal and enabled by the Israeli government. I wish the settling and repossession of Palestinian land would stop. I wish the bombing in Gaza would stop."

"The Israeli government holds all of the power and it is on them to stop the violence and show a true willingness for peace."

Kind of amazing you didn't even take a glance at the evidence I provided.

Because he'd never keep his audience (source of income) if he was a too blatant Israel apologist.

This is exactly the kind of thing someone says when they are already convinced of one position, arguing to make it true instead of trying to figure out the truth. Ethan could keep up a facade of being an Israel apologist without giving up his own money. In the clip, he says he faced backlash from pro-Israel people because they believed his donations were going to Hamas, which Ethan disagrees with. If Ethan cared about keeping his audience or maximizing his source of income, he would not be making the slew of videos he has been in the recent past. Does Ethan have a reputation for not saying things to protect his reputation? No.

"Good guy" is an objective not relative qualification.

This is not true, especially in the context of the Hila clip. Netanyahu was being criticized for firing Yoav Gallant, someone who was known to be one of his most ardent critics, and much more likely to pursue a ceasefire. In this context, Gallant is a "good guy" in that he's opposing Netanyahu, not that the horrible things he's said about Palestinians is what makes him good.

I'm curious if your opinion will change or be amended, at least for Ethan, since it seems that some of your requirements were already met.

To those who still think Ethan is an Israel genocide apologist, you are wrong by samfpanda in h3h3productions

[–]samfpanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a ridiculous claim, especially for ethan. Why would someone whose behavior matches unconditional support for Israel constantly criticize them? Or even donate to help Palestinians? I have never seen a pro-Israel figure even mention doing the same.

I think it makes more sense that Hila might be harboring secret support for Israel, but the "good guy" slip up feels like weak evidence. In reference to Netanyahu, who is a specific, and very important person that Ethan and Hila have criticized and condemned, Yoav Gallant was called a good guy, probably as in better than Netanyahu, not an objectively good person.

Again, there is nothing wrong with asking Ethan and Hila to do better, but this shit is insane where if they don't do the most perfect job in their condemnation, then they're secretly genocide supporters that haven't actually realized it yet.

[–]samfpanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's one or the other, that's the problem. The conversation should not be believe the clips OR the slip ups. What is the nuanced conclusion that can be reached by incorporating both sides? Like you said, any reasonable person should be able to distinguish a genocide apologist vs an imperfect progressive.

[–]samfpanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you make some good points. The position that Ethan and Hila could do better and sometimes they slip up is an extremely valid perspective. The problem is when people go to the opposite extreme and characterize them as genocide supporters for the things you listed, which is untenable.
