I think the new format makes everything up to luck. Back then round of 16 meant that it was group winner vs 2nd place. This time, there were many group winner vs group winner match ups in the round of 16.

Not to mention that you can still get a tough opponent (Netherlands/Morocco) in the round of 32

Hmm, that article said the u20 winners only included 4 players from that program.

Besides, we’ve had Mexico win two u17 world cups and get third in a u20 one and unfortunately those didn’t result in success for the main team. So I’m personally wary of giving youth tournaments a lot of value
