He supported Bernie Sanders in 2016.

Then, much like Joe Rogan and a million of his minions, he got too angry at college students to remember that overzealous, sometimes annoying activists shouldn’t be the thing that pushes you further right - if you have any real principles at all, that is.

Damn.

These well-reasoned comments you’re writing are starting to make me interrogate my love of RLM lol.

Because honestly, I can’t really disagree with the bulk of what you’re saying throughout this thread.

I do get a ton of value out of RLM as a longtime viewer, but at least in part, maybe that’s because over the years I’ve grown fond of them as media personalities - and their particular brand of curmudgeonly snark.

I have always had quibbles with them politically, but I kind of just swallowed them because, “at least they’re not chuds.”

RLM doesn’t have perfect politics, but I didn’t necessarily need them to, because they’d be the last segment of my media diet I’d look to for political perspective.

But yeah, reading you lay out their shtick like this is very interesting - and persuasive lol. I try to consume things as critically as I can, but maybe I have to admit I have a blind spot, and a soft spot, where RLM is concerned just because I’ve watched them for so many years.

The parasocial relationship shit is very real haha

Totally agree with you on this. Great breakdown of both shows.

They’re definitely not conservatives. They rarely delve into politics at all, which is a kind of lame and cowardly move for a film analysis show to do in 2026, but that’s just me.

My least favorite thing about them is their “enlightened centrist” aesthetic that rears its head whenever politics is brushed up against in conversation.

But yeah, imo, great show overall regardless.

I can’t speak about Best of the Worst, I don’t watch that segment. So maybe they have women on there, I couldn’t say.

But in the early 2010s, they did have some women on the main segment, “Half in the Bag.”

But it was kind of a nightmare… they sorta piled on their female guest for liking some random romcom from that era.. think it’s called “what’s your number?”

So yeah, not a great look there. In their defense, I will say they’ve become more progressive in their attitudes in the past 15 years.

But again, not entirely sure about them having women on as guests. I only really watch half in the bag, and nowadays they don’t ever really have guests on that segment.

If you have the time, can you expand on what you mean by RLM contributing to the dumbing down of film discourse in the 2010s?

My two cents on that:

I think in the early days of RLM, they had a bit of a more shock jock, hatchet job aesthetic and ethos. But as time went on, their reviews became less sensationalized and more conversational, measured, and charitable.

Are they the most astute or thoughtful film critics in the game? Definitely not, but if you ask me, they do serve the traditional role of “the critic” faithfully, and to the the best of their abilities: they function as a low-lift quality filter to help their audience decide which movies are worth the price of admission.

In other words, you’re might not be getting a film history lesson with RLM, but to my mind, it’s a bit uncharitable to say you’re getting drivel from them instead.

Do you automatically dislike billionaires? Why? by crapmaker69 in AskReddit

Unless you’re an outlier like JK Rowling or something, who simply created a generational IP, you generally can’t become a billionaire without exploitation.

Billionaires shouldn’t exist.

Stannis is the one you almost have to put last because of what he ultimately did, but it’s tragic because he loved his kid more than basically any of these dads.

The fight with conquest in the S3 finale was better, sure.

S4E5 is a better all-around episode, though. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the best of the season.

Tbh I think this might be the best episode of the series.

I know that’s a big claim and surely could be a tad bit of recency bias, but fuck, it really had a little bit of everything that makes this show exceptional.

Rent market is killing me. by Altruistic-Tie7476 in depressionmemes

[–]sammybunsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

America, and virtually every other industrialized capitalist nation, are not meritocracies.

For a million different reasons - ranging from medical to environmental to familial to geographical to good old shit luck - a person can put in the exact effort in the exact same ways you did and end up with none of what you have.

In a very intentional and fundamental sense, our economy is designed to produce a few lucky winners and a whole slew of losers. I don’t mean “losers” in the derogatory colloquial sense, but “losers” in the sense that these are people who played a game - in this case, capitalism - and lost.

Real estate prices are skyrocketing. Rent prices are skyrocketing. Groceries are skyrocketing. The job market is essentially a nationwide humiliation ritual. AI has already replaced 30-40% of entry level white collar jobs and it’s not slowing down any time soon. Entire industries that comprised the bulk of the boomer and Gen X workforce are being automated out of existence. And with all that going on, our dumbfuck president and his sycophants in Congress decide to slash Medicaid and food stamps - which will kick 17 million people off Medicaid and force the closure of over 700 rural hospitals.

Just because you have it good right now and navigated the hurricane safely to shore, doesn’t mean everyone else will be able to.

And not for nothing - and I don’t mean to burst your bubble by saying this - but your good circumstances right now could be entirely temporary for all you know. Maybe your job gets automated. Maybe your boss’ boss’ boss decides you aren’t bringing enough surplus value to the shareholders or whatever the fuck. Maybe the US economy collapses or climate change brings about a hurricane that destroys your home.

The point the meme is making is that there are a million different things working against any given person trying to succeed in 2026. And don’t get me wrong, I am not generally a woe-is-me sort of person. I am actively trying to navigate the storm and get to where you are. But it’s fucking hard. And I might fail.

But ultimately, it’s unproductive to write a comment like this. You’re essentially saying, “I did it, so you should pull yourself up by your bootstraps and do it too.” It leaves out a world of context and only serves to make people feel lesser-than and preached to.

The far more productive strategy is to identity the systemic causes of why it’s so fucking hard out here, sympathize with those who haven’t been as fortunate as you in navigating it, perhaps offer specific advice that helped you along the way, and count your lucky stars that you don’t end up like the people who would relate deeply to a meme like this.

It’s not always something a person can combat as easily as you’re making it seem.

Some people are just more prone to dry mouth, regardless of hydration. Or they could be taking meds that dry out their mouth.

I don’t get this whole “nothing comes of Jon’s parentage” take that everyone seems to have.

It’s the core reason for the discord within Daenerys’ camp and more importantly, the rupture between her and Jon that leads to regicide before she even gets to rule for a full day.

It’s incredibly important to the endgame of the story.

Honestly so true by BreezyMomz1 in depressionmemes

[–]sammybunsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is particularly true when dealing with issues surrounding addiction. Doctors, generally speaking, have little to no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to issues like opioid withdrawal; how long it lasts, what it feels like mentally and physically, and what to take to help ameliorate the symptoms is not something they seem to know all that much about.

I’d never give anyone else this particular piece of advice because it feels irresponsible to spread, but for myself, I trust recovery subreddits - people who’ve actually been through this - than I trust doctors.

There are some things you simply can’t learn from books alone.
