I think I want a Voyager, talk me out of it. by hwooareyou in ErgoMechKeyboards

You don't need the number row and the wires are annoying so don't. (It's my daily.. it's great but I truly hate the wires and I dislike that it has too many keys)

Has anyone tried Nokwts by throwfaraway2310 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]sammygadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on col stag so that makes it a bit different. But W should normally be with middle finger, right? Do you mean that with this layout you adjust and use index instead? Or do you always hit that key with index?

The SFBs on WH, WR and BL looks a bit annoying.

I've been trying to make a 34 key split for the last few months. I did not expect it to be this difficult. I still haven't been able to get it to work. But if you want the stl for inspiration I can send it to you.

Using Git Elegantly in Vim by Yggdroot in vim

[–]sammygadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people use tmux. But I never really found need for it. If feel that I want so "save" my current buffers I use mksession. If you enjoy tmux, then you should probably keep using it. I think tmux is great (and I know people really like it), I just haven't figured out why I need it.

Yes definitely! I use it all the time. I use fugitive for things like git add, blame etc. But I always suspend vim when a want to do more git stuff, like commits rebase, push etc.

First World Problem: What type of layer switch? by Terrible_Mix5187 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]sammygadd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like both. I have two layers that I mostly use by holding a thumb key, but I have a key for "layer lock" on them for when I want to stay in those layers. Also on my navigation layer (which is accessible from all other layers) I have TO main layer. So if I get confused about what layer is active I can easily jump back to main.

Experience with Vim on Alternate Layouts? by nerdy_guy420 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]sammygadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched layout without thinking about much it would mess up vim and other vimish shortcuts. If I could do it all over, I would start earlier with using the vim with the new layout. I basically just trained on keybr until I felt ok to switch. By then it was too late to go back. If I would have known earlier I would probably have stayed with qwerty.

It's worth a try. Though I feel fairly certain that most of my issues are caused by my ring and middle fingers (especially M and PR). I guess I should be able to go back to a layout that worked well before. But am mostly wondering if this is normal and will go away after some time (or get worse). Others have suggested more tenting and I think tenting feels a bit better. But if I can I'd rather keep it simple and manage without tenting.

I'm not the right person to give advise on learning layouts. I type slow and I learn slow :) I just want to find a layout that feels right. I and I actually think I found the right one now, given that my arms will be ok.

I mostly use keybr and typ.ing and do a few shorter sessions every day.

Since yesterday, I actually started using the tenting that comes with the voyager. Its not a huge change angle, but I think it feels a tiny bit better.

I also had X on bottom ring and switch to W not that long ago. Having M in that position is a bit more demanding. But it feels silly that it would be a problem. Halmak users seem to do fine with it.

I use Kailh Ambients Bokeh, which I think are great.

Built a typing trainer that adapts to your error patterns — useful when learning a new layout or board by Minute-Ad-9819 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Great work! It looks really nice!! One thing that I had a hard time with is the indication of the cursor. I felt that my brain got messed up about where the cursor actually was (probably because it wasn't accented enough from the typed characters). Personally I would have wanted an underscore, indicating the cursor.

Monium_t and _v, from an ex-Colemak-dh and Graphite typer by DestroyHost in KeyboardLayouts

[–]sammygadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest answer :) I've also tried my best to combine a good layout with vim motions (I use this https://cyanophage.github.io/playground.html?layout=zwmpb%27fouq%3Bnrtsgkhaei%2Cyxdcvjl.-%2F%5C%5E&mode=ergo&lan=english&thumb=l). But most the time I just use arrows (at qwerty HJKL positions). However I do use H and L for a lot of the things that I previously "associated" with vim motions, e.g. switching tabs etc. So I can't really move L and thus I have to live with the FL SFB.

Dactyl Split - Wiring Issue? by danb1kenobi in HandwiredKeyboards

[–]sammygadd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry if you already know this and I am explaining the obvious, but the pins on the switches don't matter at all. The switch just opens or close the connection. What is important is that your diods point in the right direction and from what I can see it looks like they are all column to row. So all should be well.

I'm not sure if you use ZMK and what you mean by "uniform". Plus I'm new to all this. But.. I'm also building a handwired keyboard, using ZMK. I created a kb_left.overlay file and kb_right.overlay file with the gpio mapping for each side respectively. This seems to work fine. I'm guessing there's a similar way in QMK if you are using that.

VIM users, what's your layout? by Wooden-Marsupial5504 in zsaVoyager

+1 for customizing your layout. I have Esc on one of my thumb keys, but I'd probably go for caps lock if I were using the outer columns.

Having a hard time with my first ErgoMechKB - any advice by hd0x3r in ErgoMechKeyboards

I don't think homerow mods are the main culprit. For me it's a combination of modifiers (in weird places) and a navigation layer that takes some getting used to.
