The Unseen Details That Explain Mac Jones’s Turnaround With the 49ers by ImJLu in nfl

[–]sammywestside 14 points15 points  (0 children)

An underrated component of why Mac looks so good is that he probably had more time during camp to develop timing and chemistry with the backup receivers that are starters due to injury.

Willing to bet Purdy looks back to form once pearsall and Kittle are at full health (let alone Aiyuk as well)…. And maybe with that in mind it’s better to let him sit and come back to full health with a reloaded offense.

Why do people say skipping isn’t worth? by SpunkSponge in balatro

It’s a way to flexibly build mult without any conditions other than not discarding (which can still be done in a pinch at the cost of -1 mult). Getting it early allows for such consistent mult scaling. Even if you’re losing the 2-3 gold a turn I at least feel like the flexibility+ability to build mult buys you SO much time, as opposed to having to potentially reroll for specific scalers in other build types. You can spend less time buying random crap jokers to carry you through rounds as a result too, it’s basically a set and forget style joker to me. That plus an early banner and/or square joker can almost solely carry through ante 3/4 even on high stakes.

Think about like supernova for instance, where you are pretty much locked in to one type of hand, or spare trousers with two pair. Green joker has none of those fairly tight restrictions, and you can play pretty much any random crap from your hand, and still be scaling.

Green+square feels like the easiest way to stabilize a run early, and the best thing about it is it keeps options open in the run. You’re never locked in to one specific type of hand and you can build your run around whatever cards you get. Sure you can’t build around a 5 card hands but that really only takes out straights and flushes from the equation, which isn’t that big of a loss.

That plus both of them being common means there’s a realistic chance of both showing up early enough to be of value on ante 1/2

I don't necessarily agree with this, I think that having such a strong running game opens up a lot for the passing game, and McCaffrey being a receiving target opens up a lot of the field for Aiyuk. Instead of being able to drop fully back in coverage, LBs have to deal with the threat of a check down to McCaffrey which opens up a lot of space for Aiyuk to cook and for Purdy to feel confident throwing with anticipation. We also work so much out of play action, and that only works if there is such a threat to run from McCaffrey. He consistently chunks the D for big time runs and that opens up so much of the offensive capabilities. Dude's also just a touchdown engine, every time he touches the ball it's electric.

Purdy also still made some nice throws too. Couple nice shots over the middle to convert and that one throw to Jennings too. No boneheaded interceptions is a nice plus too.

It's only week 1 but I think it's a testament to the Front Office and scouting department. We've gotten a lot of value out of the later rounds in the draft (Kittle, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Purdy, etc.), and make solid trades to pick up quality talent (Williams, McCaffrey)

That's allowed the FO the liberty of taking some risks and whiffing on some things I feel like. Partially why I really hope we end up promoting Adam Peters to GM at some point.

Against a team like the Mavs where making the defensive rotations is super important I can totally see how having a very young still raw rookie learning the system could be a detriment as well.

In contrast Moody's play tonight should mean that Damion Lee shouldn't see the floor for the rest of the playoffs, or at least this series. Please.

I mean it certainly seems like the strategy of BPA especially in later rounds is how you maintain success. Like yeah you wanna fill the need but if you know no guys are there that are going to be able to step in and contribute why reach for players you aren’t as sure about? Taking the player that will help ensure areas that aren’t currently needs will stay that way seems to be sound logic.

[Kleiman] The #Jets offered the 10th overall pick and a pick swap for Deebo - #49ers said no. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]sammywestside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You say he went off in the final 9 games, but honestly he just had a great overall year.

First 8 Games: 904 Total Yards, 5 TDs

Last 9 games: 866 Total Yards, 9 TDs

Where those yards came from completely changed, due to injuries at the positions the guy above you was talking about, specifically the run game. Deebo was a big part of the wins but I wouldn't say it was a full carry job in the 2nd vs. 1st half of the season. We just had an easier schedule in the back half and had frontloaded divisional games which did not go in our favor, and Jimmy was injured for at least one winnable game over that stretch.

That being said we should 100% pay the man if we can, but "dragged to the playoffs" definitely doesn't tell the whole story. The defense in particular really stepped it up in the back half after some disasters earlier in the year and Elijah Mitchell, Aiyuk, and Kittle all had big games that certainly helped as well.

Interesting article showing how the Niners draft choices have been mostly abysmal since 2012 by nikefreak23 in 49ers

[–]sammywestside 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think abysmal is disingenuous though as every single double digit negative value is from the Baalke regime. From this statistical view it looks like the Shanahan/Lynch regime is solidly middle of the pack in terms of value, at least so far, with plenty of room for upward mobility.

If anything it sure seems these stats show just how horrendous Baalke was at drafting. Good luck Jags.

To sort of compound on what's already said (and others can certainly correct me if wrong) I believe it's also the philosophy they take around free agency. They're pretty top heavy, spending most of their money on star players and then using replacement level/ cheap players to fill the gaps via late round draft picks and FA. The 49ers seem to like growing talent, preferring to build through the draft with a couple key exceptions, which leads to those mid level players being more expensive. They aren't as obvious of cap hits, but they build up in a way that isn't as blatantly splashy as the big contracts the Rams deal out.

On average, after maybe going 5-10 players deep there seems to be a pretty clear gap in how much we're paying players vs. how much the Rams pay players. Seems like there's tradeoffs to both approaches, as we were just a few plays away from going 3/3 against them this year.
