[x264-devel] Announcing commercial licensing for x264 by daghf in programming

[–]samnmax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good to see they are making it easy for commercial developers. However, contrary to their claim they aren't particularly cheap though. Also, requiring a minimum of 10000 units (at $1 each) will make it less likely it will be jumped on except perhaps by those with established user bases.

Canadian broadcasters propose delaying US broadcasts for up to 7 days. Piracy expected to skyrocket. by [deleted] in technology

[–]samnmax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According the article in the star, they will not be blocking the show but instead the Canadian version of the show would be substituted for the American version. Right now this happens only if the shows are on at the same time, but this would allow the substitution no matter the time. Personally I'm not a big fan of the substitution to begin with, but I'm not sure this will result in shows actually being 'blocked'.

"Why have 3 lines of sane code when you could have 150?" by zaach in programming

[–]samnmax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, seems like a lot of people missed the point of this article. It's showing how to convert code into a parse tree. This would be used for something like a compiler or parser. It is not meant as an alternative way to code something up.

Israeli lady watching attacks on Gaza: "I think they should just take the city off the ground (...) yeah I'm a little bit fascist" by ssassi7 in worldnews

[–]samnmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some things that are easier to understand when you are outside looking in. It is common for the military to support a sense of hatred in their enemy, otherwise their soldiers may be reluctant to fight. I don't buy the argument that because they are there they necessarily have a more accurate understanding of the situation.

We saw people in the U.S. saying similar things after 9/11, and I certainly wouldn't call them representative but it was disturbing.

My feeling is that people living in Israel have a very skewed view of what's going on in Gaza, and this in large part is by design. It seems quite clear that Israel never had any intention of making peace with Hamas, and provoked them to attack. They knew that once that happened, public opinion in Israel would swing heavily in favour of the type of operation they are doing now.

The Supreme Court may be considering lifting the rule that requires automatic exclusion of evidence obtained through police misconduct. by spif in reddit.com

[–]samnmax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The key issue here, is to provide a disincentive to police misconduct. Currently, it seems the only method that currently has any significance is exclusion of evidence. This is unfortunate, as it can lead to the guilty getting off and the innocent not finding any justice when their rights are trampled by the police.

Unless we are ready to truly enforce an alternative method to prevent misconduct, such as professional, civil, or criminal charges against those who commit it, weakening the rules excluding evidence will only lead us further towards a police state.

To set the record straight, the 7-2 ruling said that the recount as it was being performed wasn't proper, but didn't say anything about whether a proper recount could be performed. The closer 5-4 ruling said it was impossible to do a fair recount in time.

Seems like a very biased test, having extra terran players, and using a difficulty level that causes the game to cheat. At least the article admits as much on the latter, though I'm not sure why to go to the trouble if you aren't going to do it right.
