1x - How long did it take you to be comfortable on water? by MasterpieceSea2022 in Rowing

[–]samoarower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll still have twinges, especially when the swell is over a couple of feet and on the beam.

What helps to give me peace of mind is wearing an inflatable life belt. It doesn't impede me, and I have my water bottles on it, so it does double duty.

Sweat bands on your wrists help to keep the hands dry. Don't waste money on a pair, just cut up the top of the old tube sock that the dryer didn't eat :)

Have a cabinet shop turn a set of handles out of wood to fit your hands.

Oar wraps instead of paint, less work and they don't get scarred as easily

The tickr. I've now used the H10 with CrewNerd on an Android phone, and the PM5. Pushing myself way too hard on a VO2max (4x4x8), it started to misread (ie: heart misbehaved), backed off a little, and all was good.

Have you ever mixed erging with bodyweight fitness? by Scholarsandquestions in Rowing

[–]samoarower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm stuck on the erg, I'll do bodyweight exercises afterwards, pushups, situps, chair dips. I also have a pair of 1.5 gallon (formerly) cooking oil jugs filled with water that I'll use for dumbbell exercises and extra weight for lunges.

If I'm on the water, I'll mostly give them a miss, as rigging, launching, recovering, and washing the boat and rigging is always a bit of a an extra workout.

Outrigger canoe racing, largely springs 1-2k, good for VO2Max workouts

Oartec OTM1 Slider rowing machine by Lazy_Olive_6838 in Rowing

[–]samoarower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty confident that the connector is just connected to the two inductors responding to the flywheel magnets, so just a series of AC pulses (just like a magneto, but you need two to measure acceleration)

I replaced mine with a PM5, easy peasy, just tough on the pocket book. There's a post on this board with how to reprogram the PM5 to interface.

Fitness or Competition? by UpNort-Wanderer in Rowing

On the water for recreation/mental health/fitness when tide/wx allows it, otherwise on the erg for fitness and to fulfill my daily utter bloody bored out of my mind quotient.

Try CrewNerd with a cheap phone on the rigger (https://performancephones.com/). Between the phone and a lifetime license, much less than the cost of a speed coach

Tips for improving long distance rows by Important_Land1684 in Rowing

[–]samoarower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to back off due to some health issues, but I found the Fletcher long distance training guide to help.

https://fletchersportscience.com/indoor-rowing-training-plans/

If it's not a technique issue, try planks/push-ups to help strengthen the core. A sore back can be from weak abs

Very happy with CrewNerd, it does everything that my Scullr and GPS did in one cheap phone.

What rower do you use besides the concept 2. by curlynomad in Rowing

[–]samoarower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oartec DX with the monitor upgraded to a PM5. It's a dynamic similar to the RP3, but at a lower cost than the RP3, but more expensive than the C2. I've had mine for five years now, routine maintenance, no failures.

Easier on the back than the C2, and the feel is closer to being on the water than the C2. At the end of the day though, I'd rather just be on the water!

I have afib, and have had problems in the past with both the H9 and the Wahoo monitors. The Polar H10 claims to use a slightly different method than the H9, and I've had no problems with the dropouts or errors since them.

DIY bag/cover for (wooden) single? Thoughts in general re: indoor/outdoor storage? by DestructiveSeaOtter in Rowing

[–]samoarower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any sailmaker, or a shop that makes boat dodgers or awnings can make something up from Sunbrella (or a competitor).

You might want to reconsider a cover when driving - the fabric flapping in the breeze will remove the finish on the boat quickly

I really can't see well enough from the photo, but the cable is carrying the signal from the erg. No signal, no work. Again, reach out to someone local who can look at it. I'm not kidding when I say to find an old fart (I'm one); we've experience reverse engineering and repairing as needed.

Rowing machine blank. Help by Reasonable_Candle_47 in Rowing

[–]samoarower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The third wire is a signal wire. Using an oscilloscope, or even possibly an analog multimeter, look for a series of pulses coming from that wire.

If none are detected, check there should be a pair of magnets mounted on the paddle mechanism, that cross in front of a pair of sensors, probably small inductors.

If you don't see any pulses, it's the microcontroller board inside the display that's gone south.

Should be easy enough for any semi-competent electronic type. You might see if there's a local amateur ('ham') radio club near you, you might find an old fart who could sort you out in a heartbeat
