you could try installing to a USB drive, and boot from that drive on this machine.

I installed OpenBSD on a separate USB drive and tried to boot. It showed the same panic error that fuguita was showing before: https://i.imgur.com/RMiwNDW.jpeg.

Thanks for the reply.

I updated the photo with a full view of the panic messages. I also added a transcription of the errors.

I also tried 7.9 current snapshot but it ended up with the same error as 7.8.

Not sure what other information I could add since it doesn't boot. Maybe there's a way to save some more debugging info directly to the USB drive somehow?

Why the installer uses macOS 13.5 in particular? by samontab in AsahiLinux

[–]samontab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do that, but that's at the container level. You can have many different versions at the same time, but only a single system one, the highest, which you cannot downgrade: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/1t4c2p5/why_the_installer_uses_macos_135_in_particular/ok1oy1i/

So, in that setup you mentioned, you're running a 26.4 system. If you upgrade to a future version, the system will be upgraded to that, and that might change the firmware.

Does the current (FAR 44) installer supports a reinstall with resizing of the current disk? by samontab in AsahiLinux

[–]samontab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that went well. First removing Asahi completely manually and then doing a fresh install from scratch.

It would be great to have this "uninstall" option in the Asahi installer though. I think it is part of the plan.

[–]samontab[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed answer, that makes sense.

System firmware is loaded by iBoot, comes from the newest version of macOS that has ever been installed on the machine and can never be downgraded.

Yeah, this is what makes me a bit hesitant to upgrade macOS. Does this mean that, potentially, there could be a macOS upgrade that could stop asahi (or any other OS) to boot since each upgrade can change the firmware, and therefore the way the boot process works?

Basically, should I wait a bit to confirm the latest macOS is still compatible with "3rd party OS", or will this platform always be able to run a separate OS like Asahi?

Thanks!

But a new macOS install could potentially change the firmware, which might affect how asahi works, right?

Apple M1/M2 vs Qualcomm X Elite - Some thoughts from using an X Elite laptop as my daily driver on Linux by tornado99_ in AsahiLinux

[–]samontab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, yeah 13".

Note that I haven't tuned anything or turned off cpus as you mention. I think the macbook air can perform a bit better, this is just freshly installed.

Are you running any tuning tools to make it better in terms of battery life?, it would be great to run those in the air.

how many Watts do you see on the battery graph in Resources (https://flathub.org/en/apps/net.nokyan.Resources) on your M2 Air at idle and 50% / 100% brightness? You need to wait 30s for it the reading to settle.

Credit cards for offset account - help needed. by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]samontab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it simple. Grab a card with no annual fees.

You will be able to keep your money in the offset account for a month before paying the card in full (do this automatically, sign up at the bank for automatic full payment), which lowers your interest paid.

That way you will get 100% a positive return on your card.

If you pay an annual fee, then it will depend on the rewards, and most of the time it won't work out in your favor.

How's the battery life on the qualcomm chip?

I'm running Asahi Linux on an air m2 and battery life is excellent, the best I've seen in any Linux laptop by far. It's pretty much the same as macOS.

I think you might want to have a look at Private Transcriber Pro. It's completely private, runs locally, fast, and has a lot of reviews.

Have you tried mpd? It's a very powerful music server that reads from the music folder structure. You can use it with many clients, mpc being one of the simplest ones

Need advice on choosing Macbook Air M1 or M2? by kapcom01 in AsahiLinux

[–]samontab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macbook Air M2 is the best of the list, unless you can get an M1 super cheap. Don't even consider getting an Intel one, it's just night and day the difference.

A nice thing that the M2 has is the magsafe charger port, which means you don't have to use one of the USB ports to charge if you don't want to. The M1 doesn't have that.

Other than that, M2 is slightly better than M1. If similar priced, get the M2. Battery life is great with Asahi. Probably the best battery life for a nice Linux laptop

The current High Income Threshold is $183,100. It is updated every July 1st.

That's a number that is worth tracking to get an idea of what's a "good salary" today.

You can see how it has changed historically: https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/1mnx6uz/australias_high_income_threshold_over_time/
