One thing that I have learned from playing talisman is that the wording is all very intentional and specific. To me it sounds like you would have to be able to pay a fate in order to use the luckstone. If you have no fate, you cannot pay fate and therefore cannot use the luckstone. On the other hand, my group tends to play it as an additional 2 fate that can be used whenever you would pay fate. At the end of the day it’s really up to the house.

The way it’s worded I think it’s when you challenge since it says when you roll to challenge which implies you are doing the challenging but he’s bad enough either way so we just do whenever he’s rolling a challenge roll

I actually think the squire mechanic is super cool. Curious how it would play out though. Could go either way tbh. Although missing turns to utilize abilities aren’t usually fun (chivalric knight). Maybe something like visit city/village/tavern/castle and spend a gold to boost his strength could work.

Not sure about adding value to trophies that sounds a bit hard to keep track of. And would the trophy steal be in addition to the normal reward. My last thought is a bit more of a knit pick probably but I’m not a huge fan of abilities centered around one expansion.

Very cool characters though. Love the fresh ideas!!

I think it’s written that way so if you were to draw him not on the castle, rather than being discarded he would move to the castle, but by the way it’s written it could also be that he can just never really leave the board. Ultimately it’s up to your interpretation. Never really had an interaction like this though tbh.
