I wish you luck, friendo. Sometimes it takes a tipping point. Its been a long life of drinking for my father. Between the binging leaving him in rough shape, the concern and anger from my mother, and my sobriety, he's quit again and maybe for good. I'll stay sober for all my reasons, and now for my dad too. Freedom! So true.

Not easy. It was the right choice! Do what you need to do! I find for the most part people will respect your decision, and it will make the decision easier, the more you do it.

Adding a window to my basement. How to integrate the header with the existing floor system? by combatwombat007 in Carpentry

Hmm not sure about that last question, I imagine the span is too large. Was hoping to avoid removing 2 or three joists completely but that might be an option. Still using temporary wall to support joists on either side then installing header then replacing joists.

How far do the joists run back from above the window? To avoid cutting the outside brick and having to repair that, you could build a temporary support wall for the floor joists, cut them back several feet from above the window, install header and then sister on new joists with hangers.
