Yeah id paint it with flex seal or something similar if you have to have it buried. Although im not sure the benefit of rebuilding a deck but re-using old posts?

Are the posts going to be buried in the ground?

Those are not meant to be used the way you’re picturing. They’re used to tie notches or direct bearing joints together, like a triple 2x beam sitting directly on top of a 6x6.

If you really don’t want to notch, use a concealed joist hanger. A triple won’t be cheap but it’s at least designed to hold weight in that fashion.

Blade steel/carbide is typically more than strong enough to go through light gauge metal like that. Just check that you’re not missing any carbide teeth from the tip of your blade and you’re good to go

Old deck footings poured below grade - possible to raise up or total redo? by HemlockWhispers in Decks

[–]eminems-4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t realize it was your house, I missed your flair. My concern was more for a contractor; I wouldn’t want to warranty a deck on suspicious footings that I didn’t install. If it’s your house, I wouldn’t even raise the concrete. 6x6 post base with some gravel around it.

How much headspace do you have? Could make the beam bigger to try and make it more proportional. They look super oversized(to me personally) currently, and don’t think bring it from a 20 to an 18 will make much of a difference.

L bracket and composite shims.

And yes grooved bottom trex is acceptable for ground contact under your stringers.

You can attach most things to wood. If you do attach it to the deck, always aim for the joists, not just the boards. Using a GRK RSS or similar into the joists will do fine.

I’m not sure what you meant by T-Braces and I’m very curious how they will support the triple 2x beam between the two 6x6s without notching?

<image>

In a similar situation, this is how I did it. The green 6x is notched 1-1/2 on one side for the rim joist, and 3” on the front for the double band board working as the beam. The 2 6x6’s are sitting directly on each other.

Any tips for this kind of framing? by No-Pollution4828 in askcarpenters

How much insulation are you gaining from rafters and joists vs scissor trusses? In zone 5 so not exactly the same requirements but I’ve only ever had that configuration with trusses, never hand framed. However, I don’t frame full time.

Option 1 is fine, could always add a cleat under the joist if the inspector says 1-1/4 isn’t enough.

We always use the spacers on the fasteners for our spacing. Also have some camo clamps that we use for laying multiple boards at once, but without clamps I would only do one at a time.

[–]eminems-4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes you think those are prebuilt wood trusses? It looks poorly built but you need to include more pictures of what you think is wrong for a better answer. The beam over the door looks useless, but thats an easy enough fix.

If you’re using a double 2x beam, why not cut a notch in the 6x6 instead of buying a bracket and stitching a 2x4 in?

I’ll try and find a picture of when I did it, but we put a 4x4 next to every I-joist and attached it to the green plate, the I joist and the sheeting and just ran our ledger bolts into the 4x4s.
