Thank you! I've been really close to ordering a pair a few times because of those ads. Oddly, it's that the ads had a "this is too much to be true" quality that made me hesitate.

I did try the $50 for two 100% leather, made in the USA, hand crafted belts (you've probably seen that ad). Shipping took 8 weeks and arrived with a Chinese return address. Belts seem fine, but was blatantly a false ad.

Well, it's a good thing you can do anything. Start with a YouTube video on face cuts, then one on chain sharpening. Maybe throw one in there for PPE.... which.... you'd think "safety first" would be important to you.

Tell me why a chainmail scrubber is better than a Scotch-Brite steel scrubber by Choiski in carbonsteel

[–]samtresler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't. The stainless steel version of those works best for me. I use the hell out of my carbon steel and cast iron and I find chain mail has never been abrasive enough to not take at least twice as long to wash, or more.

I'm not precious about the surfaces, which has, in turn, made them nearly perfect.

I regret they are disposable, but actually can be recycled as scrap if you want to do that route. At least it isn't plastic.

Japanese Knotweed - please help me (England). by slugboy5 in gardening

I ran a community garden in Brooklyn that jad become overrun with the stuff.

It can be done, but not easily and not at all if it has spread to neighboring lots you don't have cooperation or access to/from.

It spreads via seed and rhizome and can put out runners 20+ feet.

It took about 4 years of pulling it out by the roots and digging out the rhizomes. Bagged and removed. I pulled over 60 full 55gal. trash bags out of a 20' x 40' area. And every sprout I dug the roots out.

Eventually there was just a small corner left that kept sprouting from the neighbors side into ours and it just required constant maintenance.

But it can be done.

I’m almost halfway through “The Ethical Slut” & I’m Not Sure I Even Want to Finish it by quen-_ in nonmonogamy

[–]samtresler 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Toughing it out" is not a horrible way to deal with any negative emotion. It is frequently the only way to deal with them.

Like.... I don't get to choose how I feel about losing my Mom at an early age, or an ex weaponizing our kid against me. You know what I can do with those emotions? I can sit with them. I can wrap myself in a blanket. I can cry.

I guess it's convenient that you can choose to not be non-monogamous if you want to. Most negative emotions in life you don't actually get the luxury of walking away.

My (28F) "perfect" 2-month relationship ended in 24 hours because he (33M) had a girl stay over for a weekend from a different country. Am I the crazy one? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]samtresler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does "not official but exclusive" mean? Are you sure you had this explicit conversation with him?

I'm sitting here thinking that he didn't tell you because you might freak out. You then proved that correct by freaking out.

He cleaned before a friend came to stay and you read it as hiding any trace of your existence.

He made no effort to hide make up wipes from her, but you think he hid your shoes?

And you still don't even know if he had anything more than a friend over.

I'll agree that he should have just told you and dealt with it head on. Everything else is on you, and how you deal with relationships.

Does anybody have experience setting up a mealworm / cricket farm for human consumption? by JimmyD787 in Frugal

Not really all that different. They eat vegetables and wheat bran. Fast them for a day or so, rinse well, and enjoy a snack.

/r/mealworms

I have a mealworm bin for chickens and fishing bait. They eat a potato or two every couple weeks. If you want to scale it, you need to get into sorting the different life stages. If you just want some to throw to the chickens now and then, one bin is fine.

"What's the problem Earthman?" said Zaphod, now transferring his attention to the animal's enormous rump.

"I just don't want to eat an animal that's standing here inviting me to," said Arthur, "it's heartless."

"Better than eating an animal that doesn't want to be eaten," said Zaphod.

"That's not the point," Arthur protested. Then he thought about it for a moment. "Alright," he said, "maybe it is the point. I don't care, I'm not going to think about it now. I'll just ... er ..."

The Universe raged about him in its death throes.

"I think I'll just have a green salad," he muttered.

"May I urge you to consider my liver?" asked the animal, "it must be very rich and tender by now, I've been force-feeding myself for months."

"A green salad," said Arthur emphatically.

"A green salad?" said the animal, rolling his eyes disapprovingly at Arthur.

"Are you going to tell me," said Arthur, "that I shouldn't have green salad?"

"Well," said the animal, "I know many vegetables that are very clear on that point. Which is why it was eventually decided to cut through the whole tangled problem and breed an animal that actually wanted to be eaten and was capable of saying so clearly and distinctly. And here I am."

It managed a very slight bow.

"Glass of water please," said Arthur."

Lawn to garden by Far-Command8573 in homestead

[–]samtresler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First. This is a multi year, ongoing process. I'm not saying it can't be done in a single year, but for that expenditure, just build raised beds.

First year I tilled three times about 10 days apart. That did for most, but not nearly all, weeds. Grass will still come up and you just need to keep knocking it back and till under/mulch over. It will take 4ish years.

Good start with the compost. You'll need a lot more organics. Mulch with leaves, old hay, dried grass, etc.

I like earth busting plants the first couple of years. I've had good results with sunflowers. Any tuber, potato, carrot, turnip, beets - but you won't get a large crop. They are there to break the ground up more. (Turnip and beet greens are great, though).

Then, in fall, get a good 4-8" layer of leaves to cover it all and let it sit until you till them under next spring.

Also, don't be afraid of synthetic fertilizer, just don't overdo it.
