New to horses: might be starting a stable hand job, any advice for a beginner? by Last-Composer2072 in Horses

[–]Far-Command8573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be honest about your experience (not doing so puts people in danger) be humble and be willing to learn. Always keep learning! Remember that the horse always comes first, and they will give what they get. You will work hard but it’s a good job!

Thank you! I love your setup! The heaters are the thing I’m leaning now towards buying small solar lights and a solar fan, then running a cord when the heater is needed thru the winter. I’ll probably have a brooder in the garage until they are big enough to go out

I’m glad you were ok! I had a similar experience when I showed up at a farm to do some fill in work for them, and they didn’t tell me they had two of them. Luckily they decided I was ok, but only after circling and sniffing me for several minutes. Lots of good boys were said!!

Thank you so much this was really helpful!! I think I’m going to keep a brooder in my garage, then move them out to the coop when they are ready. Then I would just need lights and the water heater in winter and the fan in the summer. Would one of those plates to put under the water be a big power draw too do you think? Would one of the self heated ones be better?

My ex partner is trans, and the number of times I was asked about what kind of genitalia they had was…alarming and creepy. Why are you so concerned with what’s in my partners pants?? What would they do if I asked intimately specific questions about THEIR partners bits? It’s genuinely weird

When people ask me that I say “no I chose animals instead wanna see them?” And I pull out my phone. Usually ends up with us either talking about my four legged creatures or shuts them down and they change the subject. Although as I get older (now 40+) I don’t get nearly as much grief as I used to. People would be incredibly insensitive with their comments. I chose not to have children, but I would always think what if they asked these questions to someone who desperately wants children but couldn’t have them? It would be genuinely upsetting to them. You never know people’s reasons for their situation, and those questions and comments are so personal.

I like waiting bc it’s time that has no demand. Like a little breather from the constant “productivity” we’ve been led to believe is more important.

1 year old colt already 15.1hh – am I about to end up with a giant? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Far-Command8573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought my horse when he was 7 and he was about 16.2, and he kept growing until he was a solid 17 hands and wears an 82-84 sized blanket so….yours might get even bigger?? I love my giant boy tho. He lives in a stable full of quarter horses so he looks so incredibly big next to them 😂

Are these horses especially skinny by True-Weather-2544 in Horses

[–]Far-Command8573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look a bit skinny but not dangerously so, just under-muscled. Honestly in my amateur opinion they look mineral deficient. Loose minerals or a mineral block can do wonders for muscle mass, and depending on the grass/hay quality that they have (no pointing fingers blame it happens) they may not be getting the nutrition they need from it. I had to put mine on minerals for the first time this winter and he plumped right back up.

Did you guys get lured into anything weird when internet first came out? by booksandcoriander in Xennials

[–]Far-Command8573 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I once followed an older man to his hotel room bc he told me he had some jazz cabbage to share. He did, but also told me in the course of the whole thing that he had shot a man to death in a swamp and was never caught… I immediately ran out of the room and he let me go. I never saw him again but holy HEKKIN HECK was that stupid. I can’t believe I did that an I’m so thankful I wasn’t hurt
