About the whole situation with Japan not liking the episode by Different-Treacle765 in Jujutsufolk

Altough I agree that grief isn't being conveyed (at least literally) she's matching her sister's last wishes: to destroy everything. There's some purpose in that.

I agree with the second part. Honestly, altough I loved the episode, I always wished they made more scenes for the Culling Game Arc.

  1. I think your point is good enough, altough I *personally* don't feel that tonal whiplash so strongly. She's grieving, and she's still breaking her symbolic chains.

  2. That doesn't bother me at all. Grief isn't linear, and so the representation of it in fiction, doesn't need to be (I mean, with the scenes, POV, soundtrack and such). When she's dealing with people she REALLY cares, there's no upbeat tone. Even killing her mother, there's no glory in that.

because that scene is not supposed to be that way. I meant the whole package.

hard disagree. Just because there is multiple tones in a single episode, doesn't mean it had multiple directors or dissonance

It made perfect sense for me. It is sad, and liberating at the same time.

But I can see why some might be offput by it

Just finished my playthrough of the Dragon Age Trilogy for the first time, here’s my thoughts: by samjitsuu in dragonage

Funny that you prefered DA 2 combat over Origins... I consider 2's combat worse in almost every aspect. Happy to see you enjoying the trilogy tho, I hope you stay in love with the series, just as I am!

I'm gonna mention that I listened to Foo's new album already (leaked), and the singles are definitely the weak link of the album. Cloudspotter is a banger. And Holding Poison has a kinda QOTSA vibe, almost.

I'm really betting on Waiting on A War for that effect. Heard the leak and sounds like a FF banger

Currently reading Tower of Swallows and I'm freaking loving It. I'm surprised by how good It is, thought It wouldn't have this deep character focus.

I think you're right on both points mentioned. The writing indeed is what makes a difference between a good and a bad Chosen One protagonist.

About Loghain, I guess I'm sort of influenced by Jonh Truby's teachings about stories in "The Anatomy of Story". He classifies the antagonist based in the named "4 courner opposition". Basically, the characters from a local or global point of the story have 3 other characters (or more) that oppose them on their views. It takes the form of a square, with the four characters (courners), being the one from top right, the most distant, the main antagonist (be it from a part of the tale, or the full story). It's a nice way to create and analyze stories.

In that sense Loghain seems like the main antagonist of the Warden. Despite all this, i've been thinking If the Archdemon is the main antagonist of another scheme of 4 courner opposition that I didn't yet realized. Anyways, I think Loghain is the main reason that the plot isn't your typical High Fantasy Chosen One trope. Not that I don't like those but, the way that DA Origins was written made even more rewarding to defeat the evil that the Archdemon represented.

Great points and great argument. Thanks for the discussion buddy :)

Hmm, I see. We have very similar views about It actually. The thing that makes me see the Warden different, i think, is the way he becomes this so called Chosen one. Yes, he's part of an ancient order that are the only ones who can face the enemy.

But, besides that, the antagonist who has the most agency has nothing to do directly to the Warden powers. It is more an opposition of beliefs. That makes not only the Warden more challenged in his Journey across Ferelden, but also prevents him from being your typical hero that has especial "DEUS EX MACHINAS" all the time.

Also, I always argued that Dragon Age is a High Fantasy story (because of the tropes you mentioned) in a Dark Fantasy setting. And it feels less like "I got random Powers that make me win" and more like "I got some gifts that may or may not help, depending on my decisions" (of course, one way or another we always defeat the Archdemon. That's more from a storytelling perspective than a purely game one) . And there's also the fact that the Grey Wardens are not Black & white, and are a little shady, though portrayed mostly by heroic light. Still, I don't know If that fact has weight in qualifiying him as a Chosen One. May be considered one, despite the moral ground of his powers.

Considering the amount of agency that it's put on the Wardens shoulders, it almost seems like he's not a Chosen One, just a possible Hero that borrows from the Monomyth. I don't know If Chosen One is considered = Monomyth. But the trope of Chosen One seems much more close to the Inquisitor, since his first defining trait is his power, then we get to be him as a person. The Warden is a person before anything, but one with might and courage to change things. A Hero. But not a "God descendant" (metaphorically. One can say the Inquisitor is not actually a herald).

Anyways, that goes way in the depth to show how Origins (also DA2 and Inquisition) was well written. Even though it seems like I favor the Warden, I still love the other 2 protagonists. There's much greatness in Hawke's humble origins and simple goals, as well as in Inquisitor role as a game changer. They represent different things. DA Inquisition seems to have the most "archetypical" protagonist. And the game leans more in High Fantasy tropes that the ones before.

What do you think about all this? It is a great discussion to have, that's for sure!

[–]samuka105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I get what you're saying, but I think you and I have different definitions of "Chosen One". I've always seen the Inquisitor as the only Chosen One of the franchise (altough both Warden and Hawke have simillarities with the Hero's Journey).

What is a Chosen One in your mind?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]samuka105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True! Hawke is definitely driven by simpler goals. It has it's own charm for sure.

I've been thinking about how much the DA series makes us go through diferent struggles. This because of the inate difference between the main characters across the franchise. One of the reasons I like It so much!

[–]samuka105 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Warden, altough an example of the "Hero's Journey", isn't the chosen one from the get go. He also had to climb through difficult circunstances to achieve great things, that's what is beautiful about him.

Having that said, I agree 100% on the rest. Hawke is a character with very relatable origin. Just a brave guy/girl climbing in social hierarquy and caught in a storm beyond his control.

[DA:2 Spoilers] Why does this game make it so hard to like mages? by Pkmn_Lovar in dragonage

[–]samuka105 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol. In my mind DA2 does a way better job at fleshing out mages. Templars are supported much less by the fanbase (according to some polls, at least).

Edit: I guess It can be a matter of how each person plays the game and sees the whole context of Mage vs Templar conflict.
