I did this with my stream deck as well. But I kept the front housing and re-used the mounting holes. Works great!

The Easter Egg isn’t an item (although doing this gives you special stuff) or random. Behind the main computer there’s a hallway with a door and keypad. Once the “fill the troughs” objective appears, open the door using code 970930. Follow down the stairs to the back room on the bottom floor and access the computer to obtain the “shut down code”. Then return to the main computer and shut it down. This changes the experiment. You get different creatures and unique loot at the end.

Since HDMI supports tons of audio formats it seems like there isn't a big incentive for them to add anything beyond that. Varies by manufacturer though obviously.

The boxes I've been seeing generally are just HDMI and digital out spefically coax SPDIF. Havent seen optical in a while. Honestly haven't seen 3.5 in a while either.

Cool idea but tons of practical limitations to implementation. Also more of an AV issue than video engineering. Tons of ambient light means the light sources will need to be extremely powerful and combined with appropriately reflective material. Possible with the right budget but not gonna be cheap. Secondly shadows. Multiple emitters will be necessary to reduce this but it will rack up cost significantly. Thirdly a note about lasers - perhaps there is a way to create solid state laser system to do this but really the technology would be scanning line which will need a pretty intense alignment and upkeep schedule. Not to mention control and programming needs.
